Harry’s face doesn’t know how to react to that. On one hand, his soft new brain informs him his actual partner is in the hospital, having been shot, because of him, and the thought threatens the dam he’s quickly put around the abyssal sadness he feels about not having managed to warn Kim at the tribunal.
On the other hand, the word partner from officer Vicquemare’s mouth, in his particular accent, feels like coming home. Harry wobbles a little, feeling suddenly light-headed. He has been pumped up full of painkillers by Gottlieb, who more or less patched him up as much as he dressed him down in the station’s lazareth. It’s a nasty wound, that thigh gunshot , he said, before droning on and on about how to care for it, disinfect it, and what to watch out for in terms of colour, smell and pain.
