Side-By-Side (2004)

Summary:

June 2004, in Los Angeles, California

Brian tries to win over Dom

Work Text:

Brian pulls his beat-up flatbed into Dom’s garage, the weight of the massive Toyota Supra sagging the rear. Dust billows around the rusted frame of the legendary car, its once vibrant white paint faded to a dull, patchy cream. The headlights are shattered, one wheel is missing, and a deep, angry dent mars the driver’s side door. It’s a ghost of its former glory, a husk.

Dom steps out, arms crossed, his gaze hard, assessing the wreckage Brian just hauled in. Vince, Leon, Jesse, and Letty follow, their expressions a mix of skepticism and morbid curiosity.

Jesse, ever the gearhead, circles the Supra slowly, a low whistle escaping his lips. "Man, that thing's seen better days. Way better days."

"Ten-second car," Brian reminds Dom, a slight smirk playing on his lips. "You said any car, right?"

Dom walks up to the Supra, running a calloused hand over the cracked fender. He peers into the engine bay, seeing the grime, the corroded parts, the sheer scale of the work ahead. A flicker of something, maybe challenge, maybe determination, lights up his eyes.

"Alright, Brian. You brought it. We’ll build it."

The garage hums with a new energy. Tools clatter, sparks fly, and the smell of grease and cutting oil fills the air. Brian, now part of the crew, meticulously cleans rust from a strut tower, his mind half on the task. Mia moves through the garage, bringing them cold drinks, her hair tied back, a smudge of oil on her cheek. Dom is under the hood of the Supra, his muscles flexing as he grapples with a seized bolt. Brian positions himself nearby, offering a wrench. Their hands brush, and Brian lets his fingers linger for a moment longer than necessary.

"Got a problem, Toretto?" Brian asks, his voice low, a teasing lilt to it.

Dom glances up, a bead of sweat tracing a path down his temple. His eyes, dark and intense, meet Brian’s. "Always got problems, O'Conner. Just like you always got an answer, right?"

Brian just grins, leaning against the fender, not breaking eye contact. "Maybe. Depends on the question." He lets the subtle challenge hang in the air, a different kind of tension building between them.

Later, while Jesse is engrossed in tuning the Supra's revived engine, Brian excuses himself to a quiet corner of the garage, his laptop open. He’s not looking at engine specs; he’s deep in financial databases, cross-referencing shell corporations and known associates. He types, his fingers flying, pulling up records for Johnny Tran's family businesses. Suddenly, Dom is there, looming over Brian’s shoulder, his shadow falling across the screen.

"What exactly are you digging into, O'Conner?" His voice is low, laced with a familiar suspicion that makes Brian’s pulse quicken.

Brian glances up, meeting Dom's intense gaze without flinching. He flashes a charming, almost conspiratorial smile. "Just checking out Tran's vehicle specs for Race Wars, Toretto," he says, his eyes holding Dom's. "Gotta know what we’re up against, right? And if I'm gonna be on your team, I need to know everything about the competition. Don't want any surprises when we're running side-by-side, do we?" He lets the last part hang, a double meaning implied.

Dom's eyes narrow for a moment, a flicker of something unreadable in their depths before he just grunts, though his stance softens almost imperceptibly. He leans against the workbench nearby, watching Brian with a new, speculative interest.

Brian turns back to the data, watching it scroll, a vague irritation tickling the back of his throat, scratching at his dry uvula. The numbers tell a story, one far more complex than just street racing. He’s looking for leverage, for the truth behind the polished veneer of Tran’s empire, a truth that might just expose the real culprits behind the truck hijackings. This Supra is his ticket in, but the real race is only just beginning.
