Work Text:

It was a quiet night in Smiling valley, and in the purple cat-tree themed house, two old, grey critters were happily relaxing.

Dogday was lying on the couch, with his wonderful husband, Catnap, lying on his chest.
They were listening to some records before they planned on going to sleep.

“Hey honey?”
Dogday asks quietly.

Catnap glances up from lying down. “Hmm?”

Dogday smiles. “I have a question.”

Catnap nods. “Yeah?”

Dogday slowly shifts up a bit.

“What would you say that your happiest day was…?”

Catnap thinks for a bit.

“Well, I have a lot of happy days.”
He answers.

Dogday smiles softly.
“Well, what’s the first one you remember?”

Catnap smiles.

“I still remember the day you proposed to me…”

~Many, many years ago~

Catnap was sitting on a lush green hillside, watching the sunset.
This was the very hillside where he and Dogday had met when he had first moved into the valley, and now, he was waiting for said dog.

He said he had something important to ask him, but they needed to be completely alone.
Catnap had no idea what, but he figured he’d humor his sweet pup.

“Nappy!”

A sunny voice get’s Catnap’s attention, making the feline smile and look to the hillside, where he could see his sweet pup running up the hill and waving.

Catnap smiles and waves back, getting up.

‘Hello my paramour.’
He signs. ‘How are you doing?’

Dogday smiles, his tail wagging.
“I’m doing good!” he says. “How are you?”

Catnap nods.
‘Better now that you’re here.’

Dogday giggles and swats the air. “Oh you.”

Catnap smiles.
‘So, what did you want to ask me?’
He signs.

Dogday gets nervous, starting to sweat.

“Well, Catnap…”
He starts.
“We’ve been dating for a while now, and… you want to stay with me, right?”

Catnap nods. ‘Of course.’

Dogday’s tail starts to wag.
“Well, I love you, and I want to stay with you too.”
He says. “Forever.”

Catnap purrs. ‘Awww, I love you too.’

Dogday giggles. “So Catnap, the question I want to ask is…”

He gets down on one knee.

Catnap’s eyes widened, covering his mouth as he realized what was happening.

Dogday pulls out a small box, smiling happily as he opens it.

The ring had a silver band, and two gemstones, that were a blue diamond shaped like the moon, and a yellow one shaped like the sun, that fit together to form an eclipse.

“Will you marry me?”

Dogday says, stars in his eyes.

Catnap tears up, looking at it.

The next few moments were tense, Dogday getting increasingly nervous as he waited for his answer.

Until Catnap slowly starts to nod.

“Yes…”

He says, gently.

“Yes yes YES!”

He kneels down as well, tackle hugging Dogday and knocking him over.

“Woah!”
Dogday says, now on his back as he wraps his arms around his beloved.

“Oh Dogday!”
Catnap says, happy tears running down his face. “I love you so much!”

Dogday gently kisses his cheek. “I love you too, kitty!”

After a few minutes of happy crying and cuddling, Catnap gets up, helping Dogday up.

Once they are both back on their feet, Catnap offers a hand, and Dogday gently takes the ring out of the box and puts it on his finger.

Catnap wipes his tears to admire it.
“Oh Dogday, it’s perfect!”
He whispers. “It’s so beautiful!”

Dogday giggles.
“Not as beautiful as my fiancée~”

Catnap cries again, kissing him in pure jubilation.

~End flashback~

Catnap sighs dreamily.
“I always get happy chills when I remember that day…”

Dogday kisses his head.
“That’s a good one…” He says.

Catnap glances up at him again.
“Do you remember our wedding…?”
He asks.

Dogday smiles.
“Hehe, how could I forget?”

~Another flashback~

Dogday was stood at the altar, dressed in a dapper black suit and waiting for his beautiful bride.

A few weeks after the proposal, wedding planning and getting everything ready, the moment had finally arrived where he would marry the love of his life.

So now he was waiting, with his friends and family in the audience, and the priestess smiling at him.

“Are you nervous?”
She asks, adjusting the ribbon tied around her neck.

Dogday nods. “A little…” he says. “I just hope I don’t mess up.”

The priestess gently pats his shoulder.
“You’ll do fine.” she says. “Just speak from your heart.”

Dogday smiles. “Okay.”

Suddenly, he hears the organ start to play, everyone looking at the end of the aisle.

And there he was.

Catnap was dressed in a moonlight-white suit, carrying a bouquet of moonflowers, and wearing a small veil attached to a lavender flower crown.

And the smile on his face was brighter than the sun itself.

He looked like an angel, walking down the aisle.

And Dogday swore that he fell in love with him all over again.

When Catnap reaches the end of the aisle, he hands his flowers off to Crafty, who was the maid of honor, then goes to stand across from Dogday.

The priestess smiles, opening her holy book.
“Dearly beloved….”
She begins.

“We are gathered here today to join the strong, sunny leader of the smiling critters, and the calming presence for the critters, together in the bonds of true love and happiness.”

She looks around the room.
“If anyone has any objections to why these two soulmates should not be wed, speak now, or forever hold your peace.”

Of course nobody objected. Why would anyone want to?

The priestess smiles. “Good.” She says, continuing.

She turns towards Dogday.
“Douglas Playtime Dayes…”
She says.

“Do you, take Catnap, as your husband, to have and to hold, in sickness and in health, in sunlight and moonlight, as long as you both shall live, and even after that?”

Dogday nods.

“I do.”
He says softly, gently placing a golden ring on Catnap’s finger, making him smile and start to cry happy tears.

The priestess then turns to Catnap.
“Cathrinus Sleep Napford…”
She says.

“Do you, take Dogd-”

“Yes!”
Catnap says aloud, interrupting her.

“Yes, I do.”

The priestess humphs.
“I wasn’t finished-”
She says.

Catnap giggles nervously, wiping his eyes.

“Sorry…”
He says, as he places his silver ring on Dogday’s finger.
“I-i’m just so excited…”

Dogday gives him a sweet smile.

The priestess sighs.
“Okay, well then.”

She clears her throat.
“By the power invested in me by the great 1006, I now pronounce you, husband and, well, husband!”
She says with a giggle.

“You may now kiss your bride.”

Dogday happily pulls Catnap in for a passionate kiss, the guests happily crying, clapping, cheering and whistling for the new husbands.

Both of them were happier than they had ever been.

~Le flashback end~

“What an amazing day that was…”
Dogday says. “Honestly, it’s hard to top it.”

Catnap purrs and nods, nuzzling against him softly.
“Yeah… I can’t think of a happier day I've had.”

He then giggles.
“Well, maybe the day that Lune was born…”

~Flash back clip show~

A few months after their wedding, Dogday and Catnap had had a long discussion.

They had both always wanted kits, and after discussing it, decided that tonight was the night they were finally going to take that big step, and wish for a child of their own.

So now they were both at sunset point, looking up into the sky, and seeing the brightest star.

Dogday looks at Catnap, who smiles and nods.
Dogday smiles too, nodding back.

He then looks back up at the star, closing his eyes.

“Starlight, starbright, first star I see tonight…”

Catnap closes his eyes too.

“I wish I may, I wish I might, have the wish I wish tonight.”
He continues.

Dogday gently takes Catnap’s hand, putting the other over his heart, with Catnap doing the same.

They both look up at the star, their eyes still closed.

“We wish to be parents.”
They say at the same time.

And then, in a beam of sparkles and light, the child slowly descends from the heavens, landing directly into Catnap’s arms.

Both their eyes sparkle as they look upon their new child.

The tiny pup was mauve in color, with maroon colored ears, paws and feet, with a patch of fur around his eye, just like Dogdays, and a long cat’s tail just like Catnaps.

“He’s so beautiful…”
Dogday says, tearing up.

Catnap nods. “He looks just like you, sunbeam.”

The two share a brief kiss, their new baby opening his eyes for the first time, looking up at them.

Dogday pulls back, glancing down.
“Oh Catnap, look!”

Catnap looks down to see the pup’s beautiful eyes.

At this, Catnap tears up as well.

“Hey little guy, we’re your dads!’
He says, lifting a finger up so the baby could grab onto it.

Dogday leans down to kiss the baby’s head, making him giggle.
“We promise, little one, that we will care for you, support you, and love you, even after you’re old enough to move out.”
He says.

Catnap nods. “You are our pride and joy…”

The baby smiles, then promptly falls asleep on Catnap’s chest.

Dogday giggles quietly. “Takes after you, I see.”

After that, they started to walk home, Catnap carrying their sleeping baby.

“So what should we name him?”
Catnap asks.

Dogday smiles.
“What about Dogday Jr?”
He jokes.

Catnap rolls his eyes, giggling.
“Definitely not.”

Dogday laughs quietly. “Yeah, I know.”

He thinks for a moment.
“Well, since he has your tail, and his colors are closer to you, I think his name should be moon-related.”

Catnap smiles. “Okay, so, what did you have in mind?”

Dogday thinks again, then smiles.

“What about ‘Lunette?’” He says.
“We could call him ‘Lune’ for short.

Catnap’s eyes light up.
“Oh, that’s perfect!”
He says.

He kisses the newly named Lunette on the head, Dogday moving over to hug him.

“Welcome to the world, Lunette.”

~Last flashback end~

“Hard to believe that Lune used to be so tiny… and nowadays, he has kids of his own…”
Dogday says.

Catnap nods. “They always grow up too fast…”

“Yeah…”

They relaxed together, breathing in tandem.

“Honestly… every single day that I got to spend with you, was my happiest day.”
Dogday says.

Catnap’s smile fades a bit.
“...Even the not so good days…?”

Dogday hums softly.
“Yes, even those ones.”
He says, kissing him softly on the head.

“Every moment that I spend with you… is a moment worth reliving.”

Catnap purrs louder.
“You’re so sweet, honey…”

Dogday nuzzles him softly. “I try to be.”

They both giggle as Dogday holds Catnap just a little tighter.

“I love you, Catnap…”
He says. “And I'm so happy we’ve gotten to spend almost our whole lives together…”

Catnap gives him a soft kiss on the cheek.
“I love you too, my sunshine.”
He says.

“And I hope that you’ll never fade away.”

Notes:

I just wanted to make a sickly sweet nostalgic one, and I was itching to write an “Old married couple” fic with them
This story is pure comfort content

If anything this proves that they are endgame and will stay together forever, at least in my mind

Also fun fact I tried to make Catnap’s house in Minecraft on my switch (Emphasis on ‘tried’ it wasn’t very good lol)
