Work Text:

Royal Margarine Cookie couldn’t believe it.

After months and months of pining, he had finally gotten the beautiful, famous, ever-so-adored Hollyberry Cookie to agree to a date. Sure, there had been times when they had hung out one on one before, but this was special. This was dinner!

It couldn’t be compared to something like watching quietly as Hollyberry sharpened weapons or helping her track down a small creature, with most of his help coming from his wyvern, Buttercream, and not himself. This was just them. The two of them. In a fancy place. With fancy clothes. And fancy food. Royal Margarine could not mess this up.

It was all going so well. Hollyberry was as beautiful as ever. A dark pink dress with a looser-fitting mermaid shape, with a matching set of pearl-like earrings and necklace. The walk to the restaurant was welcoming. The food was oh so delicious. The attempt to impress the warrior by eating as many shrimp as humanly (cookiely?) possible was successful. Even the casual humor to open the powerful woman’s heart was working.

That’s why it was so heartbreaking when the two stepped outside.

As soon as his body exited the venue, he felt it in his bones. As simple as a shiver.

It was cold outside.

Of course he didn’t wear a jacket! It would ruin his perfectly planned outfit. With a heavy heart and an attempted silent gulp, Royal Margarine cookie offered his arm. He would just have to endure it.

“Shall we?” He grins, trying to ignore the slight feeling of his teeth chattering.

Hollyberry laughs delightfully and takes his arm. “We shall! Boy, that was something. You aren't too shabby at karaoke.”

Royal Margarine’s lips twitched up, and the two began to walk to the inn Hollyberry always stayed at. The facade didn’t last for long, though. He felt his masks and fibs were always so easily unraveled by the wonderful queen he was accompanying.

“Are you cold?” Hollyberry says in her usual teasing, but also concerned voice.

“Me? Psh, hah, what? No, I'm fine. It’s warm, actually.” A shrug in his step before another wave of cold hit him.

“Haha! And I thought I was a bad liar.”

Hollyberry suddenly slides her arm out from Royal Margarine’s, and he looks at her, confused.

“H-hey, what’s up?” He not so discretely hugs himself, cheeks warm and frowning slightly due to the loss of warmth as well as his lack of ability to lie.

“Psh, just give me a second, okay?” Hollyberry waved her hand in dismissal. The shivering cookie looks to the side, embarrassed, fixing his hair to balance his feelings and get back on his feet emotionally the best he could.

However, his pout loosened when he turned back to Hollyberry,

With an outstretched hand, she was holding out her white furred coat to him.

The wyvern rider looked softly at Hollyberry as she offered him her coat.

“Stop staring and take it, silly.”

“I-I couldn’t! It’s yours! Won’t you get cold?

With a laugh, Hollyberry shakes her head. “Please, my body temperature is warmer than Earthbread’s hottest desert. I’ll be fine.” She smiles as she places the coat in her date’s hands.

Sure, he could refuse it. After all, he was the one who asked her out, he should be giving her his coat! However… it was plenty big enough to fit him. It was soft, still carrying the essence of warmth. It was from *her*.

After a moment of silence, Royal Margarine slipped the coat over his white dress shirt, unbuttoned as usual (so much so that the knot to his dark yellow tie practically resting at his stomach…) and adjusted the collar.

“So…. How do I look?” Royal Margarine hit a little pose, causing Hollyberry to laugh heartily.

“I don’t mean to laugh, it’s just… quite big on you, you know?” Before Royal Margarine could get too embarrassed and take it off, Hollyberry rested her hand on his shoulder. “It’s cute!”

Blood rushed to his face and he coughed awkwardly, taking her arm and beginning to walk again. “Ahem… thank you.”

~~~
After a peaceful, charming, and especially warm walk back, Hollyberry let out a yawn, stretching as she and Royal Margarine approached the door to Dragon City’s famous inn.
“Quite the night tonight, eh? I didn’t know you were such a shrimp-eating machine.”
“Oh, that was nothing.” Royal Margarine grins, trying to brush off that it was in fact something (that will leave him sick for the next few days due to food poisoning. Whoops)
“Thank you. For um. Coming tonight.”
“No need to thank me. I had fun, you know? You’re not too shabby, mhm.”
A flush on his cheeks, the shorter cookie began to take the soft borrowed coat off, but was stopped by the other.
“Nope. Keep it until next time.”
Hollyberry grabbed Royal Margarine’s hand that was mid-taking off said coat and pressed her lips to the back of it.
“Good night, Royal Margarine Cookie.”
The door of the inn is promptly closed, and the poor cookie with a heightened heart rate, jacket that isn’t his, and red lipstick kiss mark on his hand makes his way back home with shaky legs and a fluttery stomach.
Maybe tonight wasn’t such a disaster after all.
