Work Text:
Alpha and his Kid Litter
They were all stacked up on the all too small bed for the lot of them being there.
Alas, somehow, that really did not matter, as love for one and other made room enough for them all! They were a family now after all.
The whole family jam packed in Alpha’s bed. The kids crowding the space even if they had their own places to sleep in. But usually either by design, or simply because, they levitated to their father’s bed during the night. They all did.
This evening though, it was story time once again in Alpha’s bed. Something of a tradition to do once or twice a week, while the rest of the nights, Alpha would read the story in the kids room before it was time to go to sleep.
The story wasn’t as important as that mostly it wasn’t, as was the time spent together.
Then again, since moving to his little cottage on a farm just on the outskirts of the galaxy, Alpha and his kids were living a pretty close knit life. Spending most of their waking hours together while working and learning.
The kids were being homeschooled and the older ones were helping around the farm and home itself. As it was life as it was meant to be, was becoming together rather nicely. More so than Alpha after adopting the kids, those tubies and a few older ones before leaving Kamino, having ever dared to hope.
They were a family through and through.
And so, every single eve, they ate dinner together first of all as prepared by Alpha and some of the older kids learning to cook. Then it was playtime for a moment and after that, it was time for the much anticipated bedtime story.
This time it was about some mythological creatures one of the kids had learnt about on the holonet while doing research for their schoolwork. Something called, mer-people. Something having tickled most of the kids fancy upon hearing of these magical merpeople.
Alpha, having found several holo novels and was now reading one of them for the kids. A rather sad tale it was, but thankfully, with a happy ending. They always were, by choice.
The tears welling in the children’s eyes as the story came to the hard part, the ending emotional as well. Not even Alpha himself having been unaffected by the mer-tale.
When the story was finished, the quiet of the room filing the calm night air.
“So, you liked the story then?” Alpha knew they had but wanting to know if there were any questions after the small angst there being part of the ordeal as well.
“They will be alright, right? In the sea? All of them?”
“Yeah, kid. They will.” Alpha smiled as he replied, patting the curly head.
“Cause they’re together right?”
“Yes, they’re family now.”
“Like us?”
“Yeah, like us, Kid. Just like us.”
There were no more questions after the happy ending having been clarified once again. The story clearly having its effect on the children, the lot of them huddling closer to their dad.
“Okay, lights out! Time to sleep.”
Alpha flicked the switch by his bedside, the darkness descending the room soon after, the moonlight filling the otherwise dark room. He felt the kids creeping in closer and closer to him, seeking assurance, comfort and safety, naturally.
Alpha making a mental note to have a more lighthearted story lined up for the next evening. As Alpha was being a tad overwhelmed by the small bodies lying beside and on top of him. Sleep never as easy with this many cramping his personal space.
But then again, he was loving every moment with these kids of his. So no real complaints about anything. Sighing contently, as Alpha would not want to change his family life for anything in the galaxy. And soon enough, the soft snores were emanating from the bedroom, the family finally sound asleep.
