Scary Tales for the Kids

The kids were on the edge of their very seats.

Wide eyed, shaking in their small booties, chewing on their nails, huddled tightly together with their fluffy toys and each other… as per usual during story hour.

Tonight’s story that definitely on the more scary side, especially for the younger kids of the group. And Alpha being the great dad he totally was for his kids, was submerged himself in the part of the characters he was reading as. Alpha’ acting with the varied voices and all, certainly adding to the effect.

As usually the stories were more tame than this one was. But after pestering their father for a scary story for a while now, Alpha finally having yielded and so here they were. The bunch of them intently listening and scared to the core.

“The scratching noises grew closer. The kids sitting by the camp fire suddenly aware, that perhaps, the story one of them had been sharing… had been real after all…”

The final words spoken in a low register, a warning if any.

Alpha let his gaze travel across his pack. The kids sitting in a perfect half circle there with varied scary expressions on their little faces, two even having closed their eyes.

There was a long spell of silence falling in the room.

And then, out of nowhere, a rattling sound was heard from somewhere in the distance.

Every single kid practically jumped in the air from their seats, eyes all wide and being frightened as they already were before, growing even more now.

“What was that?” One of them whispered in panic.

“The hook!” Another scared voice replied.

Alpha remained calm though, even if the noise was a little too perfect for the ambience at the very moment.

“I will go and check. You kids remain here.” Alpha told them in a low voice and getting up.

Alpha left the bigger kids’ room and slowly descended the stairs to the first floor of their home. Listening to any kind of sounds which did not belong to the house.

Just as he was about to get into the kitchen there was a rattling noise, from something falling.

Alpha stood perfectly still. About turn back to grab something stronger than his two hands and feet to fight with. As there was certainly something there which did not belong in their home.

As Alpha turned, he almost jumped himself. The kids there, all quiet, while standing right behind Alpha, staring right back at their father with bewildered expressions on their little faces.

“Someone’s in the kitchen.” Alpha whispered.

Alpha grabbed the bat the kids used for playing ball. They all moved in lockstep through the door leading to the kitchen.

As they reached the door, they all waited for a moment, listening for more noises or the options of someone jumping them. But it was all quiet.

Alpha decided to turn on the lights to have a look-see. As he did, the lights turning on, lighting up the room. What they saw next, was certainly a surprise.

As there it was, the culprit. The noise maker. Their uninvited guest. Eating from a pack of snacks spilled onto the floor, with the packet ripped open with claws.

A small Tooka-cat.

“A... cat?”

“Yeah.”

“Aww, it’s so cute!”

The smaller kids rushed to the Tooka, being careful so not to scare it though.

The Tooka hissed and jumped back as soon as the kids approached, but remained close enough, just out of reach though.

As soon as the Tooka realised the kids weren’t going to harm him, he let them pet him.

“Awe, can we keep him?”

“Please, dad?”

Alpha looked at them, the wee faces on him as were the older ones too. Pleading with their puppy dog gazes.

“Please? Daaaad!!!”

“Pwetty pwease, Dad!!!”

“Okay fine! But you will have to take care of it.”

“We promise.” It was a unified response from them all for sure.

And so, the scary story time turned into an accidental kitten adoption.

Several, actually. As the next day, all the Tooka’s siblings turned at the doorstep as well. All five of them. Thankfully there was room in the Alpha Household for all the new pets.
