Meeting the Thunderbolts

Summary:

When CIA director Valentina Allegra de Fontaine tries to save her reputation after a humiliating political failure, she bets everything on a reality show.
The pitch? Document the creation of America's brand-new superhero team: the New Avengers (or, as they like to call themselves… the Thunderbolts).
Between messy cohabitation at the Watchtower, personality conflicts, and a chaotic production, what was supposed to be a propaganda spectacle quickly spirals into a disorganized mess where nothing goes as planned.
Valentina tried to control the narrative. The reality show had other plans.

Chapter 1: EPISODE 1: Meeting the Watchtower

Notes:

It took me a few years to finally get this idea out of my head, but I always wanted to write the “day-to-day life” of superheroes through the lens of a reality show/mockumentary! I hope you enjoy it. A couple of disclaimers: I’m still figuring out how to use the site, so some formatting mistakes may have slipped through. Also, English isn’t my first language, so feel free to let me know if you catch any errors. Good reading! <3

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

The opening of the reality show displays the CIA logo discreetly placed in the bottom-right corner of the screen. A flashy title card reading “Meeting the New Avengers” pops up in the center, paired with an epic soundtrack that feels way too over-the-top. Fade out.

Fade in. In a pre-recorded studio shot, with a plain neutral background, perfect lighting, and flawless posture, Valentina stands center screen, wearing a perfectly tailored suit. A lower-third title introduces her while she speaks.

🎞 VALENTINA ALLEGRA DE FONTAINE
Director of the CIA / Creator of the New Avengers

“Since the Avengers disbanded, the world has been adrift. It’s time to reignite the flame of hope in the American people, and that’s why I put this new team together. Not for glory. Not for headlines. But for you. I present to you: the New Avengers. This team represents the future of global security. This reality show will reveal who they truly are: human, flawed, but ready to lead. With transparency. With dignity. With purpose. Meet the New Avengers.”

Fade out. Music fades until silence. The loud hum of the Quinjet engine kicks in.

Cut to a strategically placed external security camera, showing the hangar at the top of the Watchtower. A Quinjet lands. Seconds later, the side door opens and the team exits one by one.

Switch angle: a ground-level camera now captures their exit closer up. On-screen text in bold: “WATCHTOWER – DAY 1

Yelena steps out wearing sunglasses, dragging a suitcase plastered with colorful stickers and carrying a small duffle full of knives. Something stirs inside her hoodie pocket — camera zooms in — a twitching little guinea pig nose pokes out.

John follows right behind, already grumbling. He’s hauling a huge backpack that looks ridiculously heavy — unless you remember he’s a super-soldier. He fiddles with his crumpled military beret, muttering under his breath.

Ava Starr comes out next, serious expression, headphones on, two sports bags slung over her shoulders. She heads toward the rooftop entrance. Her eyes flick past the camera but she doesn’t react.

Alexei steps down, mumbling, but immediately grins when he spots the camera. He’s wearing his full Red Guardian suit, carrying a little Hulk backpack and a star-shaped pillow. He waves dramatically at the camera.

Bucky is the last to exit. He’s got only a plain black backpack that matches the rest of his outfit. His face says he already regrets being here. He shoots the camera a sideways glance but keeps walking with firm steps.

Cut to the rooftop bar. Bob sits there smiling, munching chips, facing the camera.

Quick cut: awkward zoom on John’s confused face as he stares at Bob.

JOHN (frowning): How did you even get here, Bob?

BOB (hesitant, chewing): Uh… the door was open…

Cut to a few minutes later. On the rooftop, Alexei, Yelena, Ava, Bucky, and John form a half-circle, throwing suspicious glances at the cameras while Alexei talks.

ALEXEI (trying to whisper): Guys… why didn’t you dress up? I sent a message in the group chat, and we all said we were going to dress up because it’s our reality show. (He rubs his face, embarrassed, glances at the camera). My God, this is so embarrassing.

Cut to a plain black backdrop with an empty chair. White text lower-third: “STUDIO (per V. A. de Fontaine’s request)

Yelena walks in, sits down, mic clipped to her collar. A voice speaks off-screen.

PRODUCER/MELISSA GOLD (off): We’re just testing audio and camera, okay? Valentina wants it to feel… spontaneous.

Bright light snaps on. Yelena squints against the harsh glare.

YELENA BELOVA
Black Widow

📽 YELENA: This is spontaneous? (deadpan at the crew)… Did you rehearse this “spontaneous” script?

Cut to John, adjusting his mic. He smiles. Stays silent way too long. Looks at Melissa, behind the camera.

JOHN WALKER
U.S. Agent

📽 JOHN: Should I start with “Good evening, America”? (pause) No? Okay.

Cut to Ava. Already seated, mic’d, staring straight at the camera.

AVA STARR
Ghost

📽 AVA: Apparently, I’m on a team now. No one told me that it came with a TV show.

Cut to Bucky. He doesn’t sit, mutters toward Melissa. Mic picks it up.

BUCKY BARNES
Former Winter Soldier/Congressman

📽 BUCKY: This is really gonna air?

Cut to Alexei. He fidgets, moves the chair, camera, lights, then finally settles in frame.

ALEXEI SHOSTAKOV
Red Guardian

📽 ALEXEI (looking towards Mel): She said it’s called Meeting The New Avengers? (pause) Good, good… okay. I’ll talk to some guys I know, get that printed on shirts and mugs.

Cut to Bob. He’s holding his own arm, smiling nervously, his mic crooked on a worn hoodie.

ROBERT REYNOLDS
Sentry

📽 BOB (to producer, anxious): Am I doing this right? Do I look at you? Or at the camera?

Cut to black.

Fade in. Aerial shot of the Watchtower exterior. Switch to shaky shoulder-cam inside the elevator, heroes crammed together in silence. Melissa Gold’s voice-over plays.

MEL: Now we’re going on a little tour so you can see the main areas of the base.

Melissa appears on-camera now, awkward in front of it.

MEL: Later, you’ll have plenty of time to explore on your own.

Cut to a hallway. Mel tries to guide the group. She walks too fast with her tablet, the heroes drag their feet.

Cut to Yelena and John framed with their backs to the camera.

YELENA: This used to be a hospital? Smells like an abandoned hospital.

JOHN: It’s strategic. Positioning. Visibility. Ready for evacuation. Incredibly efficient.

Cut to a tracking shot across the heroes’ bedroom doors. Each has a digital nameplate with old, pixelated photos.

AVA: Seriously? You used my S.H.I.E.L.D. dossier photo? I was sick that day.

MEL: It’s temporary! We’ll do a professional shoot later!

JOHN (pointing at his photo): Now that’s a handsome guy.

Cut to the kitchen/dining floor. Alexei struggles with the automated fridge, talking to it like a person.

ALEXEI: I’m the Red Guardian. National hero. I deserve access to protein.

AVA (analyzing): Needs biometric ID.

ALEXEI: I have biometric fist. Very strong. I break the door if I want.

The fridge door suddenly opens. Alexei flinches. Bob calmly grabs juice.

Quick cut: Yelena jumps down from a vent, lands on her feet inside a lab.

Cut to the gym floor. John is already sprinting on the treadmill at max speed. Bucky stands, arms crossed.

BUCKY: You know this isn’t a physical test, right? We’re just looking at the place.

JOHN (panting): Yeah, but if it was… I’d beat you.

Quick cut: Ava ties her hair in a bun by the mat. Bucky and Yelena chat in the background. Bob tries to enter the ring and hits his leg on the rope, tripping.

Cut to the team in a command room.

AVA: Why are all the computers still on Windows 7?

JOHN (snickering): They’re frozen in time… just like Bucky.

BUCKY: Ha-ha. Hilarious, Walker.

Cut to a blurry zoom: Bob and Yelena walk side by side, Bob offers guinea pig food, Yelena smirks slightly.

Cut to Melissa, walking with her back to the camera down a long hallway. Tablet in hand, explaining.

MEL: So the tower’s 93 floors are divided into lower levels for admin and offices, middle levels for rec areas, labs, training, bedrooms, and then the upper floors with rooftop, hangar, meeting rooms… which you’ve basically already seen, right?

She pauses for an answer. Turns around. Just finds a camera staring at her. Cut.

📽 BUCKY (bored, to camera): Mhm. Place looks different… at least compared to what Steve told me back when Stark owned it.

📽 YELENA: Well, I… (glances at someone behind camera) got caught checking the vents, (back to lens) so yeah, I’d say the place is fine (shrugs).

📽 BOB: It’s a big place. Too big for me, honestly (pause). I don’t need more than my room.

📽 ALEXEI (excited): Now this is what I’m talking about! Real housing for real superheroes!!

📽 AVA: The girl spent hours explaining every room, but it only took me a few minutes to explore all the floors.

📽 JOHN: It’s good to finally… properly know the tower. It’ll be important to have this space as a… team.

Cut. Neutral background sound fades in. The team sits in a circle in a plain room. Posters read: “TEAMWORK = TRUST”. Mel is sitting with white cards in her hand and the tablet on her lap.

MEL: Val… (clears her throat, glancing at the camera) Uh, Mrs. De Fontaine said these bonding exercises were designed by expert psychologists. They help build trust and connection.

Mel passes the card from the front to the back of all the other cards. Wide shot: the team looks bored.

MEL (off): First exercise: say something positive about the person on your left.

JOHN: Ava has… emotional control.

Ava blinks, says nothing. Turns to Bob.

AVA (to Bob): Bob is… kind. Even when he has no idea what’s happening.

Bob smiles and thanks Ava.

BOB (to Bucky, eager): You’re strong and calm. That’s cool.

BUCKY: …Yeah. Cool. (turns to Yelena) You’re… direct. Don’t waste time. That’s useful.

YELENA (without pause): Alexei knows how to cheer anyone up. Loud as hell, but he can do it. He’s got… spirit.

ALEXEI: That’s a compliment? I’ll take it! (hugs Yelena awkwardly, laughs loud)

Alexei turns to John.

ALEXEI: John is determined and a patriot. He fights for his nation, like I fought for mine. I respect that (punches the air lightly).

Zoom cut to guinea pig munching lettuce in Bob’s lap while Melissa continues.

MEL: Alright, next exercise-

Cut to black.

Fade in. Wide shot of kitchen. Pots boiling. Bob wearing an apron with "Sous-Chef" written on it in marker in Yelena's messy handwriting. Alexei tries to cook borscht for everyone.

ALEXEI: More salt? (offers spoon)

YELENA (tasting): Less salt. You always overdo it.

BOB (whispering to camera): They work well together. Like a two-burner stove.

Cut to the kitchen island. John chops potatoes like he’s in a competition. Ava and Bucky sit at the counter watching.

AVA: Who’s he trying to impress?

BUCKY: Himself.

Silence. Bucky takes a swig of beer but hides it quickly when he remembers the camera. Ava chuckles. Bucky rolls his eyes.

Fade in. Dinner is served. All six sit together at last. Bob holds the guinea pig, napkin tied as a bib.

JOHN: Nothing worse than a wrinkled uniform. You win the fight, pose for the photo… shirt’s creased. That’s the legacy?

YELENA (chewing): Worse are the radios with echo. Half the time I just hear: “...ksssh… need… ksssh… cover.”

BUCKY: I don’t use radios anymore.

Cut to Bob, listening intently, feeding a cucumber slice to the guinea pig.

AVA (looking at plate): Meetings are the worst. They brief us like we’re gonna pause a fight to read spreadsheets.

JOHN: I like order. Schedules. Schedules are underrated.

YELENA: You literally have a spreadsheet called “Approved Heroic Poses,” John.

JOHN (serious): I do. I can share it with you later.

They eat in silence.

BOB: We should do this more often. Eat together. Without cameras… or at least with fewer cameras (glances awkwardly at nearest lens).

Comfortable silence.

BUCKY: Doesn’t feel like a team yet (pause). But doesn’t feel like the worst place I’ve been, either.

YELENA: That’s the most optimistic you can get?

BUCKY: I’m trying (shrugs).

Side shot: all six eat quietly. Warm kitchen light. Soft clinking of cutlery, faint guinea pig squeaks. Fade out.

🎞 Pre-recorded Valentina Allegra de Fontaine
Neutral backdrop, perfect lighting, inspiring music.

“Living together is just the first step. In time, they’ll learn to trust, to fight together… to inspire.”

Next episode preview (voice-over with flashy edited recordings): Flashes, drama, and way-too-tight uniforms. The team suits up for their very first official photoshoot... but let’s just say, not everyone’s exactly smiling for the camera.

Fade out. Music ends. Credits roll.

Notes:

So… did you guys like it? The idea here is to narrate basically what would air in the show. Scenes that were “cut” from the reality show edits, I’ll post later on the tumblr blog I made just for this fanfic: @meetingthethunderbolts :)
