To say things haven't been awkward lately is an understatement. In the weeks that have passed since the Idol Awards things have gotten a lot better, for sure. Rumi no longer hides her patterns. She talks to the girls more, feeling a weight lift off her shoulders. She can feel herself repairing her relationship with Celine.
But there is one thing that remains under lock and key. Her heart remains in a cage, begging to be let out. It claws and gnaws against its metal container. Rumi tries to ignore it. But its screams are growing too loud. Every time she sees Mira or Zoey, her heart bangs against the cage, pleading with her to let it free.
One night, it finally breaks out.
A brush of Mira's hand against her own and the light chuckle from Zoey all becomes too much for her. Rumi quickly makes an excuse, words haphazardly falling out of her mouth, before she finds herself on the balcony. She gasps for air, yet her lungs refuse to take in. Ears ring, drowning out the ambient city noise. The world around her spins, looking more like a water color painting. Her patterns glow a bright purple. If it was for all the light population, she would stick out like a sore thumb.
Rumi doesn't know how long she stands alone. Could be minutes. Could be hours. Could be days for all she knows. But when something touches her shoulder, she nearly leaps out of her skin. On instinct, she summons her trusted sword. Spinning on her heels, she comes face to face with Mira and Zoey, both their arms raised high in the air.
Rumi releases the air trapped in her lungs. Shoulder slump and her sword dissipates. Apologies are given and explanations are asked for. Rumi knows she cannot hold it back any longer, not with her back against a wall. With a heavy sigh, she admits to the feelings trapped inside.
How for a long time now, she has loved Mira and Zoey. She cannot recall when it happened. Just that one day, when the sun hit them just right, she knew she was screwed. She buried it deep inside out of fear, out of shame of her patterns. But after the hell that was the Idol Awards, after being brought to the brink of ending her life, the feelings grew until the intensity became too much to bear.
It's why she fled. It's why she is out on the balcony, gasping for air. It's why tears are pricking at the corner of her eyes, waiting to roll down pink cheeks.
Mira and Zoey don't give a verbal answer to her. Instead, Rumi is suddenly pulled into a kiss by the taller girl. She can taste salty tears mixing in with Mira's strawberry chap-stick. Rumi barely has time to recover before Zoey is kissing her as well. Her citrus shampoo floods the half demon's nose. When Zoey releases her, strong arms pull her into a bear hug. Mira joins, nearly causing Rumi's ribs to crack from the pressure.
But she doesn't care. Tears stream down from her face as they tell her how much they have always loved her. How they always wanted to tell her but didn't know how. How they were so scared when Rumi fled, thinking she was gone forever, they were ready to have their souls sucked away.
They stand on the balcony, holding each other tight in a crying, blubbering mess. But they are each other's messes, now and forever more.
