Work Text:
Fire doesn't have a permanent shape.
It always dances on the palm of his hand,
provides light and heat. Water is life,
but it will not save them from darkness.
The world is cold and unforgiving
like the monsters that hunt them
giving them no rest.
Fire is life, but it's also
too bright, too dangerous.
It will not save them from death.

She says, “Can you make it pretty?
Can you make it colorful?”
“I've never thought of doing that,” he says.
One look of her, he sees how the flames
reflect on the colors of her eyes, how they
reflect her soul, and now he's inspired.
“I'm willing to try it out.”
##
He's alone, and he flexes his fingers,
try to give form and melody to the flames
he makes. Give it the depth it needs,
bend it to what he wants.
It is an art form
he cannot seem to master.
To bend the flames
is to bend the world at his will.
And he is not exactly a god
not exactly an artist
not exactly human
This is too natural, he thinks
He feels disappointed to himself
afraid that he'll disappoint her too.
He is made of destruction
not creation.
But when her fingers brush
his skin, tracing
every line
every scar
something ignites.
This fleeting, foreign feeling
that seems to make his heart
euphoric and calm
safe and loved
he wants to cry in relief
“We can make something beautiful,” she says. “Together.”
He agrees.
##
When she holds
his hand, sparks fly up and down his spine
and like lighting a match, it lights his mind
his eyes
his soul
Her palms rest on the back of his hands
supporting them up
and they watch as the flames shape
into her liking.
They are tiny fireworks
popping quietly
merrily
lovingly.
He looks up to her eyes
who looks down to their creation
with soft eyes and a soft smile
with wonder and amazement
and he melts in front of her.
She catches him
and they stay like that
for moments
##
When she lets go, darkness embraces them
cold and unforgiving
He wants her to hold his hand again,
her to hold his face
her to fall apart with him
##
They search in the dark
and found each other
They cling to their bodies
until daybreak comes
until they are safe
in darkness
she lights up
and doesn't let go
