Work Text:
Ophelia turned her head to the sound of the giggles, mayla was there, not taller or wiser than any four years-old of her age. she was on her little baby-chair, ophelia faces lighten the moment she see her daughter kicking her little feet for the mashed vegetables on the plate she's holding, she quickly grab the baby spoon and scooped a small protion to feed her. and she even surprise herself saying things her mother said for her.
"go on mayla, this one is for mama"
"this one is for papa"
as if the universe heard her , she caugh something moving in her peripheral vision, it was thorn, he was back from work. The moment he put his case and coat at his usual place, he joins her in the kitchen, kissed her temple and instinctivily placed one of his hand on her back and the other on her (not so tiny anymore) baby bump.
"how are the princesse's of my life ?" Thorn ask her, his thumb gently rubbing the small of her back.
"as usual, mayla is the calmest child i've ever laid my eyes on, she's clearly from you" She respond giving her another spoon of mashed vegetables.
He kiss her again, this time on her cheek "how about you rest, for the end of the day ? you are pregnant and up since 8am"
"Thorn, you just came back from work-" she began to argue before being cut off
"Maybe, but I'm not the one creating life right now, thats the least I can do for you, get some rest I will take care of mayla"
"fine " she let out with a small laugh.
Thorn landed a kiss on her lips before she handed him mayla's plate before slipped out of the kitchen.
Mayla was a fantastic child, Growing up she had thorn's calm and Ophelia's genuine curiosity for life, she always wanted to see everything, be a part of something, she always tried her best when she started school and (lets be honest here) when she discovered she was a chroniker, just like her father, it was way more easier for her.
nothing in this world could ever describe how she loved her.
but she knew, everything have an end.
she could thought nothing had changed when she woke up, their shared bedroom, their bed, her clothes, everything was still the same, but she felt it immediatly. The weight on her stomach was gone, mayla's giggles were gone, and now, nothing inside her would ever feel normal again.
she glance at the clock on the wall, at this time thorn is at work and wouldn't be back until tonight. her fist clenched on her nigthdress, the on that felt so tight in her dream.
she didnt have the strengh to do anything, moving a single muscle felt like leaving her dream behind, like moving on.
So she didn't, not even to eat.
She didnt wanted to leave her daughter, she wanted her back.
Not once in her life did she think she would love being a mother, but when she learned about being infertile, because of her. when she maybe, maybe started to envisage it, with Thorn. She never wanted anything more.
when she finaly got out of her transe, the moment she saw thorn coming back from work, she realized that she didn't move all day long, an then she felt even worst. Ophelia could feel how worry he was and yet he didn't show anything, he didn't wanted to scare her off, he just walk over, got down on his knees next to the bed and notice her hand, still clench around her clothes, resting on her stomach.
"that dream again ? " he asked placing a hand over hers.
to everything she just tilt her head, still not ready to admit that now it was all gone.
"it gets more real every time" she said, her voice barely louder than a whisper.
"you really bet on a loosing dog thorn.." she added, her hand tightening again.
she couldn't see his face, but she knew he hated when she talked like that.
"the only thing I bet on, is the only thing I could never loose, you."
a tear slide down her face, he wiped it gently.
"I'm sorry, I couldn't move today, I did nothing"
Thorn slid one arm behind her neck and the other one beneath her knees, and lifting her as if the prothesis around his leg never existed, He held her close against his chest.
"Then you don't have to" he murmurs into her hair
"lets get you something to eat"
