The smell permeating the air was nothing short of heavenly. On a rare day off where Rumi was free to do as she pleased with the ones she loved most, these soft moments meant the world to her. She'd cherry pick her favourites and store them within a folder labelled ‘family’.
Currently, her favourite was waking to the girls pressed against each other, biting like animals. But she'd never admit to it, not when the people who meant the most to her already knew.
Zoey was curled into her side, one arm draped across her stomach, the other grasping weakly at the sleeve of her shirt. Zoey’s gentle breaths threatened to lull Rumi back to sleep once more and she was far too weak for her to refuse.
Alas, the sound of ceramic against the marble countertop reminded Rumi of the much more pressing need to finally find the source of that delectable scent. The past week had been filled with hard training and even harder live shows, leaving the girls pleasantly sore and spent. Rumi’s stomach reminded her of the hunger gnawing at her bones.
“Morning,” Rumi's voice came out like a purr, the edge of sleep still clinging stubbornly to her body and mind. Mira stood over the stove like a soldier sent to war, each movement quick and precise. Chopping, flipping and plating the omelet with perfect poise.
Rumi leaned heavily against the kitchen island, hands pressed against her cheeks as a dramatically wistful sigh slipped from her lips. Mira snorted a laugh, glancing over her shoulder with a soft smirk as she spotted Rumi's blissed out expression.
“Morning princess~” Mira slid a plate in her direction, there was a tiny chibi tiger poorly drawn in tomato sauce, drooping eyes staring up at her like it witnessed the horrors of the world firsthand. Rumi couldn’t hide the way a smile crept onto her face, eyes shining with mirth.
“Zoey isn't up yet?” Mira set the pan she was using into the sink, letting the tap run enough to fill it before carrying over the last two plates. Each had a different silly design drawn on top that made Rumi's heart clench within her chest.
An uneven turtle with an extra leg and sparkles for eyes on a omelet with bacon, mushroom and cheese, and a… corpse? On the plate before Mira, her omelet topped with chilly flakes so red that Rumi was sweating even looking at them.
Rumi felt herself scoff at Mira’s proud little smile as she dug in. “Not yet, she started clinging to the pillow I gave her when I left, I'll give it another five minutes.”
Mira glanced down the hall with a warmth to her gaze reserved solely for them, Rumi felt her gaze drawn to the way Mira's posture softened around the edges. “If she's even a second late I'm going in there.”
They both knew whose funeral that would be, in the end. Zoey wasn't a morning person, and if her slumber is disturbed any time before nine that wasn't planned beforehand, she'd wake up swinging. Literally.
There was a time she clocked Rumi square in the jaw and left her sprawled across the floor out cold for a solid minute, she immediately went back to sleep when Rumi was no longer shaking her awake. Mira had to tape pillows to her body and poke her with a broom, a broom sadly lost in the war, but its sacrifice would forever be remembered, a picture of shredded wood and loose bristles hanging framed in the hallway as a memorial for lives lost for the greater good. It's hanging next to the blanket pulled apart at the seams and charred around the edges.
“Are we feeling like a couch day today?” Rumi spoke up, her voice quiet enough to match the relaxing morning atmosphere. Mira glanced across at her through a bite, eyes squinted in the way they do when she's fighting back a smile. “Don't think so, pretty sure Zoey wanted to check out the gift store across from our boba spot.” Rumi raised her brow, “the store we've been to three times in the past month?” Mira nodded gravely.
“Maybe we should consider a-” Rumi turned her head to stare down the hall, voice lowering until it was nothing but a whisper, she leaned forward like she was sharing a state secret. “-Different shopping centre.”
“What's this about shopping?” Rumi jumped high enough to slam her head against the bar light dangling above the countertop, Mira cringing at the follow up groan of pain that left her mouth.
“Oh, sorry baby,” Zoey wrapped Rumi in a giant bear hug, squeezing her half to death before taking the stool beside her, one hand still rubbing her shoulder softly. “I really wanted to check out that one store across from the boba you like so much, Rumi!” Her hands pressed flat against the marble, jumping up and down in her seat with a wide grin. Mira sent Rumi a knowing look, ‘do something!’ it screamed.
“That sounds wonderful,” Rumi pointedly ignored the groan from across the bench, eyes closed in a blinding smile that Zoey surged forward to capture in a fleeting kiss. “Yes! You're the best! Thank you thank you thank you!” All three of them knew if Zoey were to ask Mira first, the woman would answer with a resounding ‘no’. Rumi would do anything and everything to make her girls smile, unfortunately, that does make her incredibly susceptible to her girlfriends demands.
Zoey stuffs the entire omelet in her mouth as she shoots up from her seat she hadn't even sat in long enough to leave a residue warmth behind.
“I'll go get ready!!” She spoke through her mouthful, bounding down the hall again before anyone could argue. Rumi's head dropped the moment her door slammed closed, shoulders sagging. Mira shoots her a playful glance, scraping her plate clean before gathering the other two to set gently in the sink. Rumi would get to the dishes after she was done sulking.
“You feel like another brown sugar tea?” Mira’s tone was playful, but the glare Rumi shot her promised a quick and painful demise should she rub it in further. Mira raised her hands in a placating manner, and if it weren't for the evil smirk she wore, Rumi would assume she truly would back down.
“So that's a no? Cause we can skip.” Rumi lunges across the counter to wrap her hands around Mira’s throat. The pair tumbled to the ground in a tangle of limbs and startled laughter.
