    Summary

Excerpt from the Hunter’s Field Manual, issued by the Ministry of Spiritual Protection and Preservation in the name of his holiness the Archmage:

“Alvae are among the most insidious and treacherous of all recorded entities. Deceptive in form, they mimic human shape and speech, but beneath the skin lies only hunger. Their abilities include infiltration of dreams, extraction of memory, and psychic infestation of the host mind. They are capable of prolonged masquerade, often assuming the likeness of loved ones to lure prey.
Weaknesses are few but decisive: alvae cannot withstand prolonged exposure to sanctified metals or the sigils of binding flame. Strike swiftly, without hesitation. To hesitate is to fall. Remember: trust no alva, for their very existence is a lie.”

John had passed his exams with flying colors. He knew the manual and protocols like the back of his hand. He knew there was nothing more dangerous than an alva.
And yet, the creature in front of him didn’t seem like it would pose a threat to him.
