- ‘No, no. It’s my treat.’
Valjean and Javert were holding hands on one of their evening walks. As the sun dipped below the horizon, soft lights began to blink into existence along the street. A quaint bakery was inviting the men to look over with its delicious sugared treats in the window and warm smell of freshly baked bread. Valjean stopped.
“Would you like something?” He asked.
“No, thank you.”
But Valjean had seen the way Javert’s eyes had caught on the pains au chocolat and entered the bakery anyway. A dainty bell rang as he pushed through the door and a middle aged woman gave him a friendly wave from behind the counter.
“Can I help you with anything?”
“Yes, I’d like a pain au chocolat please. It’s for my friend.”
The woman’s eyes crinkled as she smiled. “Of course.”
Javert began to protest.
“You don’t have t-“
But Valjean quickly cut him off.
“I want to.”
“Seriously-“
“ No, no. It’s my treat. ”
And Javert could no longer argue as Valjean levelled a stubborn look upon him.
Javert felt himself smiling.
“Thank you.” He said.
“Of course my dear.”
As they continued their walk home, the normally stern police inspector happily munched on the pastry and Valjean felt warm inside as he had made his lover smile.
