Halyard: surprising them with little gifts

Summary:

prompt 45: surprising them with little gifts

Work Text:

When Robby comes home, the groceries for tonight's dinner are on the kitchen island, together with a new double pack of tissues, the car keys, and a box of his favorite chocolates. There's a '25% off'-sticker on it.

A moment later, Frank rounds the corner and startles so badly, he stumbles backwards with a hand to his chest. "Jesus! Robby! What!" He laughs at himself after a moment of shock and reaches out to Robby as if to steady himself. "Hey."

Robby grins with Frank before he looks at his watch. He is almost an hour early, because both ellipticals were being used and he didn't want to wait for his turn. He didn't think he was that quiet entering. "Sorry?" he apologizes. "I can come back in louder, if that-"

Frank swats at him and reaches up to comb his fingers through Robby's still damp hair. "Welcome home. I just…" He presses a kiss to Robby's cheek and gives him a one-armed hug. Robby returns it, rubbing his hand along his lover's back. "Mm," Frank murmurs and presses more kisses to Robby's cheek and neck and inhales deeply. "You smell so good." He lingers a little longer, pressing against him, hand on Robby's back. He can feel Frank smile against his skin.

"That's not even my shower gel," he complains when Frank steps away and towards the kitchen island, because shouldn't his lover be a little less excited over the generic soap at the gym? He usually smells a lot better.

"It's not the shower gel I'm hot for, Mike," Frank murmurs and rolls his eyes up. He grabs the pack of tissues and pushes the box of chocolates towards him. "Here, found these."

"For me?"

Frank looks at him, saying 'Who else would they be for?' with just his eyes. "You have to eat them soon… the best-before date is next month."

Robby takes them, already looking forward to sneaking one tonight. "Thanks."

Frank is already on his way over to the second doorway to put the tissues away in the linen closet. And that's the end of that. Robby takes the car keys and puts them on the board by the door before helping to put away the bags. He grabs the chocolates and puts them in the fridge because they taste infinitely better when they're cold.

"I love you, too," he says then, because that's what those chocolates say without words. From somewhere down the hallway, he gets a "What?" back, before the closet door bangs shut.

"Nothing!" Robby says, loud enough to carry to the bathroom. No, actually, there is something, because this man he loves thought of him and because the gift touches him. He's about to follow, when Frank comes back to finish up in the kitchen, eyebrows inquisitive, asking for a repeat. Robby says it again. "I love you, too.”

Frank smiles at him. "They were in the bargain bin."

Robby waits until Frank is close enough for him to tug at his T-shirt and crowd him against the counter. "You still bought them," he says and presses kisses to Frank's lips. In between soft smacks, he continues, "You thought of me and you bought them because you love me."

Frank makes a face and looks at him through half-lidded eyes, reaching out to run his fingertips through Robby's short hair. "You're cheap if that's-"

Robby interrupts him with a groan. "Shut up. Don't ruin it. I'm having a moment." Frank obeys and presses his lips to Robby's.

They're not going anywhere with their kisses, so they trail off after a while and Robby pulls back. "I'll help you with dinner?"

They cook together and later, after dinner, when they're sitting on the couch and put a movie on, Robby wanders back to the fridge. The box really ought to be opened quickly. The best-before date is next month after all.
