Chapter 1: The Prisoner of Marineford

Chapter Text

The sea air carried the tang of salt and smoke. Above the white stronghold of Marineford, gulls wheeled and cried as if sensing the tension brewing in the square below.
At the center of it all, on a high scaffold bristling with rifles and cannons, a boy knelt in chains.
Monkey D. Luffy, pirate, captain, menace of Enies Lobby, survivor of Impel Down. His straw hat was missing, his chest bore a network of bruises and shallow cuts, his lip split and scabbed. Yet his posture, even hunched against the weight of sea–prism shackles, was unmistakably defiant.
His eyes were burning embers beneath his battered brow.

“I don’t care what you do!” Luffy shouted, voice raw but carrying over the plaza. “I’m not gonna die here! I still gotta see my crew again—I AM GONNA BE THE KING OF THE PIRATES!”

A ripple of sound tore through the crowd: disbelief, outrage, laughter. Some civilians jeered, others murmured uneasily. A few marines shifted on their feet, shaken despite themselves.
A guard slammed the butt of his rifle into Luffy’s back. “Shut your mouth, pirate scum.”

Chains rattled. Luffy coughed blood, but he grinned through his teeth.
Above, Fleet Admiral Sengoku rose to his full height. His white coat of justice billowed in the salty wind as he raised his hands for silence. His voice boomed like a war drum, amplified by den den mushi to every corner of the seas.

“People of the world! What you witness today is history in the making! Before you kneels not just a pirate, but the spawn of rebellion itself. Monkey D. Luffy—son of the world’s most dangerous criminal, Monkey D. Dragon. His bloodline is a disease. His defiance threatens the order of our world. Today, in the name of Justice, we cut this disease from the root!”

The plaza erupted in cheers and cries of fear. Reporters scribbled furiously, their cameras snapping images of Luffy chained, Luffy bruised, Luffy refusing to bow.

And among the marines, Garp stood silent. His fists trembled at his sides, nails digging half–moons into his palms. His jaw ached from the force of his clenched teeth.
He remembered a boy with a wide grin and a straw hat too big for his head, clambering onto his shoulders and yelling about adventure. He remembered Luffy scarfing down meat until his cheeks bulged. He remembered a promise, broken too many times: I’ll make you a strong Marine, Luffy-boy. I’ll keep you safe.
Now that boy was a condemned criminal, sentenced to die in the shadow of the world’s might.

Far away, aboard the Moby Dick, Ace’s roar split the sky.
“DAMN THEM!” His fist slammed against the railing, wood cracking beneath the blow. “Why Luffy?! Why him and not me?! I should be the one up there, not him!”
The crew’s eyes were grim, their silence heavy.
Marco stepped forward, voice calm yet iron beneath the surface. “Yoi… Ace. Losing your head now won’t help him.”
Ace whirled, fire flickering unbidden at his shoulders. “Don’t tell me to stay calm! That’s my little brother they’re about to kill!” His voice cracked, raw. “He doesn’t even—he’s not ready for this…”
From his massive seat, Whitebeard rumbled with laughter that shook the deck.
“Gurararara! That brat has spirit. Reminds me of you when you first came aboard.”
Ace froze, startled.
Whitebeard’s grin sharpened, bisento resting casually in his giant hands. “The Marines made a mistake dragging my family into this game. They think they can scare the world by killing one of my sons brother? They’ve forgotten who I am.” His voice deepened, thunderous. “No one touches my family and lives!”

The Whitebeard Pirates roared in answer, weapons raised, feet pounding the planks until the entire ship trembled. Even Ace felt the swell of strength surge through his veins, though fear still gnawed at him.
Maybe—just maybe—Luffy had a chance.

in the black waters of another sea, a warship of the Revolution cut toward destiny.
Dragon stood by the window of his cabin, the storm outside echoing in his expression. His cloak snapped with every gust. His shadow fell long and heavy across the map-strewn table.

By his side stood a woman cloaked in midnight. Her hair flowed like ink, her eyes sharp as blades, shimmering with a light that was not wholly human.

Her voice was soft, but the air itself seemed to shiver when she spoke.
“They’ve chained him in the square. Our son. They’ll kill him before the world’s eyes.”
Dragon’s hands clenched. Rare emotion cracked through his stone façade.
“I thought keeping my distance would protect him. I thought… I thought I had time.” His teeth bared in a snarl. “The Government dares to use him as a pawn—to break me by killing my blood.”
Her power hummed beneath her skin, waves rising unnaturally around the ship before calming again at her breath.
“They will regret it.” She lifted her chin, eyes burning. “I have hidden too long. They will learn what it means to touch a mother’s child.”
Dragon’s gaze met hers. “Then it’s time. For both of us.”

Meanwhile, beneath the waves, a yellow submarine slid silently through the deep.
On deck, Trafalgar Law adjusted his hat, eyes narrowed, thoughts racing. His crew shifted uneasily, watching their captain’s every move.
Law smirked faintly, though his chest was tight.
“Straw Hat-ya… You never do anything the easy way, do you?” His voice was low, sardonic. “Guess I’ll have to clean up after you again.”
He didn’t say aloud the truth he barely admitted to himself: that his path had been tangled with Luffy’s since the day they met. That there was something in the boy’s fire, his reckless defiance, that pulled at him like gravity.
This wasn’t just an alliance anymore. It was personal.
The square of Marineford pulsed with tension, every heartbeat echoing like a drum.

The execution scaffold loomed high above the plaza, its silhouette a grim reminder of Gol D. Roger’s final moments. Shackled at its center, Luffy struggled against the sea-prism cuffs until his wrists bled. He panted heavily, sweat dripping into his eyes, but the fire of his will didn’t dim.

“I told you already!” His voice cracked across the square. “I’m not gonna die here! My crew’s waiting for me! My brother’s waiting for me!”

His words carried like cannon fire. The crowd shifted uneasily. Somewhere in the ranks of marines, a young recruit whispered, *“He’s still fighting… even like that…”* before being silenced by a glare from his superior.

On the execution platform, Sengoku’s expression hardened. “Insolent boy,” he muttered. Then, louder:

“Your spirit changes nothing. Justice will prevail.”

Down among the marines, Garp’s shoulders shook.

He heard every word. He knew that voice, raw and stubborn, the same voice that used to cry when scraped knees bled or when meat ran out at dinnertime.

'Damn it, Luffy…'

Every instinct screamed at him to move—to tear through the soldiers, to shatter the chains, to grab his grandson and run. But his duty held him fast, heavier than the strongest sea-prism. If he moved now, he’d betray the uniform he’d worn his whole life.

And yet if he didn’t… he’d betray his family.

The first rumble came from the horizon.

A booming tremor that shook the cannons on their mounts, a distant roar of waves that had nothing to do with the tide.

“Report!” a marine officer barked.

“Enemy ships sighted!” the scout’s voice cracked, high with panic. “Whitebeard’s fleet is approaching!”

The words spread like wildfire. Marines scrambled, cannons rotated, rifles snapped to ready. The plaza bristled like a cornered beast.

On the scaffold, Luffy’s eyes widened. His chest surged with a sudden, desperate hope.

“Nii-chan…? Ace?!”

He pulled harder at the shackles until his wrists screamed. If Ace was out there—if his brother had come—then maybe…

Far across the water, the *Moby Dick* split the waves like a leviathan, sails billowing, Whitebeard’s jolly roger high and defiant. Behind it, a fleet of allied ships churned the sea to froth.

On the prow, Ace gripped the rail with fire in his eyes. His heart pounded like war drums. “Hold on, Luffy. I’m coming for you!”

Beside him, Marco spread his arms, blue flame igniting as wings of fire unfolded from his back. His gaze sharpened, calculating.

“Yoi… The old man wasn’t kidding. They’re ready for us. But that means we just hit harder.”

Whitebeard rose from his seat, bisento gleaming. “Prepare yourselves, my sons! Today we shake the world!”

The crew roared in answer, voices carrying across the waves.

Inside Marineford’s war room, Sengoku slammed his fist against the railing. “So it begins…”

Admiral Akainu’s lips curved into a cruel sneer. “Let them come. I’ll burn every last pirate from the sea.”

Kizaru yawned lazily, though his eyes gleamed with sharp intent. “Oooh, looks like it’s about to get flashy…”

Aokiji exhaled slowly, frost curling in the air around him. His gaze drifted to Luffy. 'What a troublesome kid…'

But it wasn’t only Whitebeard’s fleet that moved.

Far to the east, the Revolutionary ship cut through the waves faster than the storm itself. Dragon stood at its bow, cloak snapping, eyes fixed on the horizon with lethal calm.

His companion—Luffy’s mother—stood beside him, her aura rippling like the sea. As the first cannon blasts echoed from Marineford, her lips curved into a vow.

“Hold on, my son. mama is coming.”

Beneath the waves, the yellow submarine surfaced briefly, water cascading from its hull. Trafalgar Law adjusted his sword at his hip, his grin faint but sharp.

“Looks like the party’s started. Time to make our move.”

His crew shouted nervously, but Law’s gaze remained fixed, unwavering.

Luffy’s defiant cries echoed in his head. 'Don’t you dare die before I get there, Straw Hat-ya.'

Back on the scaffold, the world shook as the first cannonball thundered against Marineford’s walls. Smoke billowed, soldiers shouted, chaos rippled through the plaza.

Luffy threw back his head and roared, voice hoarse but unbroken.

“I’M NOT DYING HERE!”

The chains rattled, the crowd screamed, and history itself began to fracture.
