    Summary

" Perhaps the best known case of couvade syndrome in Ancient China was that of the 7th Prince in the Liang Dynasty. During the reign of Emperor Xuan of Western Liang, his son Lin Jingyan, born Xiao Jingyan, was recorded to have “borne his wife’s pregnancy symptoms for her”, a feat marvelled over by ancient Chinese scholars and doctors. Notably, his wife Lin Shu was the Young Marshall of Western Liang’s Chiyan army, and she soon resumed her military duties after birth, leaving her husband to raise their children. Symptoms experienced by Lin Jingyan included the usual pregnancy-related symptoms such as nausea, disturbed sleeping patterns, appeared altered hormone levels as well as breast growth and increased sensitivity.
