It's Nothing, or Not Enough.

Summary:

It's Davrin, Rook, and Lucanis' first anniversary as a couple. They go out for a nice dinner and exchange gifts.

Work Text:

Raine stands before Lucanis’ door, presents in hand. Their Talon always seems to be working, leaving little time to relax with he and Davrin. A problem he’s going to fix, one way or another.

He knocks, once, twice, thrice. Lucanis greets him with a warm, slightly tired tone that tells Raine he’s arrived just in time to get his idiot a break.

“Lucanis.” He calls, stepping inside. “I know you haven’t eaten or had any sort of break today. You promised us you’d do better.”

At least he has the sense to look apologetic. “There’s just so much to do, and—“

“And you’re not going to get it done by overworking yourself. Now, come on. You and I are going to go meet up with Davrin, and then the three of us are going out to eat.”

Lucanis pouts, but he gets up before that purple swirl of magic has a chance to take over. Spite’s work, he’s sure. Even if he can’t see nor hear the spirit despite his attempts. “Fine.” There’s no heat behind it, there never is. Not since the three of them came together and worked out any issues they might have had with each other. “Where are we going, anyway?” Lucanis slides up beside him, stealing a quick kiss before moving ahead of him.

“You’ll see.”

“Will I now?”

Raine smirks. “You will. When we get there.” Notably, he doesn’t let Lucanis have either of the small wrapped boxes in his hands. Can’t ruin the surprise, after all.

“You’re playing with fire, mi amor.”

“I’ve played with worse.” Given the blight still pulsing through his veins with that ever tempting, sickening song, he’s certainly got bigger problems than a little heat. “Now come on, we’re going to be late.”

It’s certainly enough of a challenge to get their Talon across town without spilling the surprise, but really, Raine wouldn’t have it any other way. After all, He’s got two wonderful boyfriends right now and a secret third one he hopes to someday meet properly.

“About time you two showed up.” Davrin teases. “Was starting to think I was going to have to spend my evening with Assan instead.” Raine simply rolls his eyes.

“It’s not my fault someone here prefers spending all his time doing paperwork.”

“I do not!” Lucanis debates. Both he and Davrin hit him with incredulous looks. “Fine. I overwork myself. Happy now?”

Raine smirks, leading the way into the nice little cafe they found. “I am, considering how much effort we put into this night.” The server nods to him as he leads his boyfriends to a table in the back. Its nice and quiet back there.  It better be, given how weird he’d felt taking Lucanis’ money to rent the place out for the night.

Raine smirks, motioning for the other two to take their seats before taking his own. He watches his lovers interact for a few moments while the staff begin preparing their meals. “Now that we’re all here, I have something for the two of you.”

He presents each of them with a matching box. Lucanis opens his first, followed momentarily by Davrin. They each pulling out a silver knife with a mix of crow and warden motifs and a purple-blue shine where the light hits them. Raine has a matching one on his belt.

Lucanis smirks at him. “A man after my own heart.” He leans over to give Raine a quick kiss. Davrin, not to be outdone, does the same. Davrin hands out his gifts, next. A set of fancy coffee beans for Lucanis, and a whetstone for him. It’s sweet, even if Raine doesn’t use a blade nearly as much as his magic.

“Ah, I see the plan here.” Lucanis teases. “You two were planning on surprising me on our anniversary hoping I’d be the only one without gifts.” He reaches into his pockets, bring out a couple of items.

Davrin’s handed an ornate wooden box filled with, what Raine assumes, woodworking tools. Davrin smiles, looking over each one for a few moments before shutting the box and setting it carefully to the side. He might not say it, but the mirth in his eyes is more than enough for them to know how the other Warden feels about the gift.

It’s Raine’s turn now, so he watches as his boyfriend passes him the other box in his hand. It smells like—

A smile, forms. “Antivan spiced tea.” His favorite. Lucanis must have noticed he was running low.

“I know you enjoy it after your morning workout.” Just like he knows how much Lucanis likes to sleep in these days now that he’s finally learning to get a normal amount of sleep. Granted, it took around fifty-seven late night conversations with Spite, but they eventually came to a compromise.

Spite… His heart hurts just like every other time he thinks of the spirit. How he wishes he could hold a proper conversation with him. To see and hear him like Lucanis does.

“Oh, I actually have one more thing!” Lucanis remembers. “I’d almost forgotten, but I’ve been working with Emmrich to get these made.” He pulls out another box, opening it to a pair of… Are those just straight up runes? It’s been a long time since he’s seen someone enchant a runestone instead of the item they wanted enchanted. It’s an old practice that barely anyone does anymore.

“Where on Thedas did you find someone capable of enchanting runestones?”

“And what do they do?” Davrin adds.

“Why don’t you find out for yourselves?” Lucanis states cryptically. Davrin doesn’t seem like he wants to go first, so Raine decides he’ll be the test run for whatever these curious enchantments are.

He grabs the one of the left, felling a wave of magic wash over him. It’s cool and warm at the same time, like a hug on a cold day.

“Rook?” That voice. It’s familiar, but he can’t quiet place it. He blinks, then looks around, trying to place it.

There, beside Lucanis, stands the purple form so similar to Lucanis that it hurts. “Spite.” Tears form in his eyes. Spite crashes into him, demanding a hug after so long. This is the best gift he could have asked for.
