    Lucanis didn’t want to be this brusque with her, he truly didn’t. So when Rook’s eyes—the ones that had saved him a thousand times over, the ones he would kill for and die for just to see the smile in them—grew pained at his dismissal and dropped to the floor, it set off a war in him between the cold, if feigned, indifference settling in his chest and the urge to take her in his arms.
    But he could not hear that particular confession spill from her lips, not right now. Not at a fraught moment like this.
    Not when the same words burned a hole through his tongue, demanding to be set free or else consume him.
    Because they had been, for some time now. How couldn’t they?

    Lucanis thought he was prepared to take down two gods at the end of the world, until Rook shatters that illusion for him.
