Chapter Text
The Fairy Godparents’ Guild. Right alongside the Potionmasters and the Builders, this guild was among the top of the top in the Kingdom of Biringan. During one particularly busy day, one fairy fluttered down the halls of the guild’s headquarters as fast as his dragonfly wings could carry him. His attempts to bob, weave and slalom past his co-workers were met with groan of discomfort and angry insults thrown at the scrawny intern, who in turn would immediately reply with timid and embarrassed apologies. He’d only been here for a week and already he felt like he was making a fool of himself.
Through it all, he made it to his destination, having managed to hold on to the folder he has in his grasp and not lose his glasses. He looked to the door he had stopped at and adjusted his glasses as he read the brass plaque screwed onto it.
“Office of Madam Gertrude Willowind, Head of the Fairy Godparents’ Guild.” It read.
He nervously adjusted his tie and flattened his hair before anxiously knocking on the door.
“Madam Willowind?” He called.
“Come in!” A friendly, grandmotherly voice came.
The door opened by itself, allowing the intern to enter. There, sitting at her desk, he saw her. A plump, elderly-looking fairy with a round face and nose, gently-drooping purple eyes behind small round reading glasses, silver hair done up in a neat and tight bun and dressed in a simple but elegant green robe and purple shawl. And in contrast to male fairies’ dragonfly wings, her butterfly wings were typical of female fairies, hers in particular being purple.
When she saw him, she smiled gently as she put down quill and set her glasses on her desk.
“Ah, Winston!” She greeted and beckoned him over. “Come, come. Please take a seat.”
Nodding and smiling anxiously, Winston approached her and sheepishly slid one of the chairs forward before sitting down. He fidgeted a bit before he was somewhat comfortable.
“I don’t mean to take time out of your busy schedule.” He apologized.
“Nonsense.” Willowind assured. “Anyone is welcome to visit. So, what brings you here today?”
Clearing his throat again, Winston placed the file on her desk.
“Well, one of the auditors wanted me to run this by you.” He explained. “None of them seem to remember this one applying to become a Godparent and can’t even find him anywhere in the applicants’ database.”
Curious, the guild’s head put her spectacles on before opened the folder to read through it. Everything seemed to be in order. She was starting to wonder what they could possibly be so concerned about. Then her eyes widened and she gasped slightly when she saw his name:
Viktor Draxx
The accompanying picture showed a fairy with dark, neatly combed hair, thin eyebrows, soft brown eyes, five-o-clock shadow dusting his slightly pointed chin, translucent green dragonfly wings, and of course, he sported a sly, subdued, but clearly charismatic grin.
“Good heavens!” Willowind nearly exclaimed from the sheer delight and surprise. “Viktor Draxx? I never would have guessed!”
“Y-you know him?” Winston stammered.
Viktor Draxx was practically legend in Biringan. One would be hard-pressed to find a a business or organization he didn't own or wasn't a patron of. An affable tycoon who wielded his vast wealth and power with only the best of intentions and whose charms could melt even the most jaded aristocrat, the magazines were eager to crown him 'Biringan's Favorite Son'; a perfect blend of old magic and new money.
“Know him? I stop by one of his bakeries every week to chat and have one of his delectable pastries.” Madame Willowind explained before sighing dreamily. “I tell you, dear. That fairy is such a charmer. And sweeter than the treats he makes, to boot. I never thought of him as the type to apply to be a Godparent, but he is full of surprises from what I’ve seen.”
As the guild’s head continued to prattle on over this Viktor character like a fan-girl, it all began to blur as Winston unknowingly tuned her out by staring at the picture. He couldn’t help but feel like this guy was rubbing him the wrong way. Like there was a lot more than this character than meets the eye, much like how the fairies of eons past deceived and tricked, before eventually getting with the times.
But then again, Madame Willowind had centuries of experience and she was rather fond of him. And if anything she was saying was true, maybe he really shouldn’t let his nerves get the better of him. Speaking of which, by the time the intern tuned back in, the guild’s head was just about done.
“Wow, he sound like a real stand-up guy.” Winston remarked.
“He really is.” Willowind replied. “And you know what?”
Grabbing her quill, she lightly tapped it against the inkwell. She quickly jotted her signature on the dotted line before closing the folder. She then handed it back to the intern.
“Take care of this, will you? And see to it Viktor gets his letter.”
Nodding, Winston made his way out of her office. As he walked down the halls and towards the appropriate offices, his nerves started to ease. Maybe he shouldn’t be so harsh on the guy. After all, he doesn’t even know him and Madame Willowind did. She almost seemed over the moon with the way she was talking about him like he was her favorite grandson.
“Probably just my nerves.” He figured as he quickened his pace.
