Chapter Text
Wildberry Cookie had sworn on his very dough to serve Hollyberry Cookie.
It wasn't this oath alone that powered his dedication; the Cookie had taken him in as one of her own sons at a time when he needed it most. She had been patient with him. Even though his first instinct as a child was to fight her, she showed him that the solution to problems is almost never force. She taught him to fight for what he believed in and treasured. Hollyberry Cookie had taught him passion.
Now, that passion had faded. The Hollyberry Cookie who took him in and showed him the true way of a Hollyberrian was replaced by one who had tried her best to protect her Cookies. He wouldn't speak against her; he knew the power Eternal Sugar Cookie held, and he wasn't going to test her limits.
Some of the Cookies of the Hollyberry Kingdom hadn't been submerged in jam for very long. Raspberry Cookie, Jungleberry Cookie, Royal Berry Cookie, Princess Cookie, Knight Cookie, Tiger Lily Cookie, and Wildberry Cookie were the lucky few spared from the same fate that the others had met. They had slumbered for a day before Eternal Sugar Cookie gave in and brought them freedom for Hollyberry Cookie's happiness.
This, however, opened up Wildberry Cookie's plan for escape.
He was heartbroken by the fact he had to leave Hollyberry Cookie behind, but he knew that the Cookie he was with now was not Hollyberry Cookie. He had thought about bringing someone with him, but speaking his idea aloud could put an end to it altogether. If there was a Cookie here who could see into his heart, there was surely at least one that could see into his mind and hear every one of his words.
When he had been submerged in the jam, it cleansed him of the scent that would attract monsters outside of the Garden. He had only realized this when the Sugar Angels kept offering him foods and baths in mulled juice. He had declined them or taken them only to throw away, and had relied on Tiger Lily Cookie for safe foods.
Eternal Sugar Cookie would forever claim that leaving the garden was as simple as walking out, but Wildberry Cookie knew that she wouldn't be willing to let him go so easily. In the chaos of all the fighting before Hollyberry Cookie had chosen to stay, Sugarfly Cookie had managed her escape. Wildberry Cookie wasn't sure what had happened, but Pavlova Cookie had since left him alone. While he'd never apologized, the quiet moments of eye contact felt like a mutual feeling they shared. The tragic love story that Pavlova Cookie had spoken of wasn't fun to him anymore after he'd experienced it himself.
Pavlova Cookie was, to be completely fair, one of the reasons he'd been determined to leave. The Cookie was right in that Wildberry Cookie wouldn't give up. He was a Hollyberrian, and true Hollyberrians had unwavering passion. As he'd watched Pavlova Cookie's slow anguish at realizing he'd missed his chance, Wildberry Cookie had decided he wouldn't live that way. He wasn't going to spend the rest of his days wishing he'd spoken sooner.
He stared down at the grass below him. It felt more like wool, and the blades he picked off immediately regrew. Little flowers were sprinkled among it, and as he plucked one, it bloomed more in his hand as a small one grew in the place it had once been. The splendor of the paradise was tempting, and he could see how so many Cookies had succumbed to it. Maybe his upbringing had given him insight into the true nature of the Garden of Delights, but maybe it was just an instinct.
Time in the Garden had been odd. The sun didn't set, but Wildberry Cookie could tell when it was night when Tiger Lily Cookie's Butter Tiger would run around as if it were hunting. Normally, this would be his signal to go to sleep, but tonight was different. He finally had a chance. As he looked back towards the Heart of the Garden, he could see the pink silhouette of the Queen Mother he owed his very life to.
For a moment, he considered staying. Maybe there would be another opportunity. Hollyberry Cookie had saved him from the streets; leaving her made him ungrateful.
He reminded himself, though, that Hollyberry Cookie no longer existed as she did before. The dense forest of Beast-Yeast was there in the distance, beyond the rainbow arches that led into the Garden of Delights.
"Wildberry Cookie...?" a voice behind him said shyly.
"Pavlova Cookie," Wildberry Cookie whispered, afraid his plan had already fallen apart. "I was just taking an evening walk."
"Good luck," Pavlova Cookie muttered back. Something behind his eyes was hard for Wildberry Cookie to crack; it was somewhere between jealousy and resignation. As he continued walking away from the Garden, Pavlova Cookie watched him.
Wildberry Cookie walked through the last rainbow arch. The light of the Garden rapidly faded as the trees of the forest covered where the entrance had once been. Even as he peered through the trees, he was shocked to find there was nothing there. He was free.
The night was quiet in Beast-Yeast. It wasn't the dangerous quiet, like it would be before an ambush, but an ambient quiet. There were still cake hounds and all sorts of creatures roaming around, but they weren't swarming him as they would have if he carried the scent of the garden. The moon was full and bright, and it cast a cool glow through the canopy of trees above the forest. Wildberry Cookie knew the shore was nearby, and the beach would be the safest place to rest.
The forests of Beast-Yeast almost reminded him of the Hollyberrian Jungles; the diversity of flora and fauna was something to marvel at. He saw some of the broken weapons from the first time the Hollyberrians had tried to leave the Garden, and a shiver ran down his spine. The side of his face ached, and he winced silently.
He walked for what must have been hours, retracing the steps of the Hollyberrian Expedition. He knew he would eventually be led back to the shore that they had landed on, and then he could talk to the Airship Pilot from the Republic to explain what had happened. The sun was beginning to rise, but just as his body was about to give in to exhaustion, he saw the grass fading. He used the last of his energy to run through the last of the trees.
As he was once again on the rocky cliffs of the Beast-Yeast shore, he sighed, watching as the sun rose. However, he heard a commotion nearby. Coming out of another part of the forest was none other than Raspberry Cookie and Tiger Lily Cookie.
"Wildberry Cookie!" Raspberry Cookie shouted, a smile breaking across her tired face. This smile faded as she looked around the cliffs, searching for something. "Where is the airship?"
Raspberry Cookie was right. The airship provided by the Crème Republic was nowhere to be found, and there was no other Cookies in sight. Tiger Lily Cookie was dragging a messy tangle of dried leaves and branches out of the trees, pulling it towards the other two Cookies.
"Rest," Tiger Lily Cookie said. "Butter Tiger... guard."
Though every basic rule of survival Wildberry Cookie had been taught told him that sleeping now would be dangerous, he nearly collapsed onto the pile of debris, its rough texture strangely comforting. The salty, earthy smell of it all was so much easier to breathe; he didn't realize just how suffocating the sweetness of the Garden had been. Even though it was nearly daytime already, the brightness of the sky did nothing to ward off Wildberry Cookie's exhaustion.
He was afraid. There was no other Cookies that could help the three of them. Beast-Yeast was still a hostile land, and a small group of Cookies wouldn't last very long without any reinforcements. However, he didn't exactly have any way off of the continent. There wasn't any boats, and the airship had departed, presumably having waited days after they expected the Queen Mother back before giving up and returning.
But Wildberry Cookie was free. That was more important than anything.

Chapter Text
The birds of the sea had decided that the early afternoon was the best time of day to loudly squawk at everything and everyone.
Wildberry Cookie squinted as he opened his eyes, the clouds over Beast-Yeast still producing a blinding light despite covering up the sun. He sat up, the soreness from sleeping on jagged rocks catching up to him. Tiger Lily Cookie looked towards him.
Tiger Lily Cookie was an odd Cookie. Wildberry Cookie could empathize with her in some ways; they hadn't been in an easy spot during their childhood. However, she had grown up in the jungles. She was still a Cookie; she could talk to and understand other Cookies without any problems. She was a bit younger than Wildberry Cookie, as was Raspberry Cookie.
House Raspberry was the second most powerful house in the Hollyberry Kingdom, only behind the royal family itself. Wildberry Cookie could see the toll it had taken on Raspberry Cookie. She frequently murmured to herself about Raspberry Mousse Cookie, her cousin and the head of House Raspberry. To her credit, Raspberry Mousse Cookie was certainly intimidating. That was, until, a certain Cookie was mentioned.
"Have... berries..." Tiger Lily Cookie said, giving Wildberry Cookie a handful of berries. He put them in the opening of his armor he used as a storage for rations, nodding at Tiger Lily Cookie. Raspberry Cookie called over to Wildberry Cookie.
"Tiger Lily Cookie wants us to find debris from smaller shipwrecks and campsites along the beach," Raspberry Cookie explained, dragging a long plank of wood toward a pile they had started. "I think she's trying to build something."
"Allow me to assist you, then," Wildberry Cookie replied, standing up. He stretched, sighing. He needed to get some fresh air, anyway. The two of them walked towards the far end of the beach that Raspberry Cookie hadn't scavenged yet.
The two of them walked in a comfortable silence, Wildberry Cookie grabbing scraps of rope that could be tied together. Raspberry Cookie cleared her throat, trying to make some kind of conversation.
"Forgive me for asking," Raspberry Cookie began, "but... you never really denied what Pavlova Cookie said about you and... your experience with love, I guess. Was he... was he right?"
Wildberry Cookie sighed. He should have known it was inevitable that someone would ask this question, and Raspberry Cookie was probably one of the safest Cookies to be telling personal information. After all, Pavlova Cookie had shared details about her deepest thoughts too.
"You may recall the Council of Heroes that Her Majesty attended with me as her personal guard and representative," he began, Raspberry Cookie nodding along. "Well, Dark Cacao Cookie also had one of these delegate figures."
"I'm listening," Raspberry Cookie assured him, tossing him another small bunch of rope to add to his bundle.
"At first, me and this Cookie didn't get along," Wildberry Cookie continued. "We had stereotyped each other. Dark Cacao Warriors think Hollyberrians only drink juice and dance."
"That's ridiculous," Raspberry Cookie scoffed, straining to add another plank of wood to the pile she had in her hands.
"After a while, though, we let each other in," he said. "We defended each other in battle like we'd been friends forever by the end of the time in the Republic. We made a bet on who would like the other's kingdom back then, but..."
"You thought you'd never get to finish it," Raspberry Cookie finished, looking at Wildberry Cookie with a soft understanding.
"I'd never even told anyone about how I felt," Wildberry Cookie explained. "I would have crumbled and no one would have known."
"I mean," she replied, "what do you see in this Cookie?"
"Well..." Wildberry Cookie felt his face heat up a bit as he spoke, "they're very passionate about what they do, and about the Dark Cacao Kingdom. They have a sweet tooth, but they'll deny it if you ask. They're loud and obnoxious but so supportive and kind. And when they talk about their comrades, the Cream Wolves, their eyes light up."
"You're smitten," Raspberry Cookie laughed, Wildberry Cookie covering his face with one of his hands.
"I saw them again when I departed early to help with the investigation into the Sky God," Wildberry Cookie said. "It wasn't easy to conceal the things I was feeling."
"I wouldn't think it was, based on how you talk about them," Raspberry Cookie replied. "Well, I don't think I can carry any more wood without snapping in half, so..."
Wildberry Cookie nodded, beckoning for Raspberry Cookie to follow him back towards the big pile of debris. He felt lighter, the words he'd been letting consume him for years finally heard and understood by someone else. Tiger Lily Cookie scanned the materials as Wildberry Cookie and Raspberry Cookie dropped them, immediately laying some wooden planks down and grabbing rope. She handed the rope scraps to Raspberry Cookie, demonstrating silently how to tie two ends together.
"Longer..." Tiger Lily Cookie said, Raspberry Cookie nodding. She continued to extend the rope with tight knots.
She handed Wildberry Cookie a rock and some nails that had ended up in the pile. While most of them were rusted beyond using, a good bit of them could be used for building. Tiger Lily Cookie laid out two of the logs that had been in the scrap pile, which Raspberry Cookie had found earlier near what looked to have been a large bonfire a long time ago. Tiger Lily Cookie brought two logs out into the water, spacing them out.
Raspberry Cookie tossed Tiger Lily Cookie the finished bundle of rope, and Wildberry Cookie hauled more of the logs towards the water. Tiger Lily Cookie fastened two logs horizontally on top of the original two with knots, creating a rectangle. She continued to tie individual logs tightly together, Raspberry Cookie and Wildberry Cookie working to pass the logs to her in the water. After the last of the logs was secured, Tiger Lily Cookie pulled the makeshift raft back toward the shore.
"Nail... wood..." she said, a smile on her face as she pointed at Wildberry Cookie and the flat wooden planks behind him. The sun was still in the sky, but the edges of the horizon were darkening. Raspberry Cookie passed Wildberry Cookie wooden planks as he secured them onto the raft, creating a flat surface and small railing for the Cookies to use. As he finished, he stepped back with the other two Cookies.
"Let's test Her out!" Raspberry Cookie said, her excitement becoming contagious. Wildberry Cookie turned to Tiger Lily Cookie, quietly thanking her.
As the three Cookies got on the raft, it continued to float with ease. They even jumped a bit, testing to make sure they could last for a good amount of time on it. They continued to laugh with each other, splashing water and giggling about coaxing Butter Tiger onto the raft. Just when the sun started to dip below the horizon, Raspberry Cookie used an old oar they had found to push off of the beach.
Before departing for Beast-Yeast, Wildberry Cookie had studied the area carefully. The water they were in now, he presumed, was the Jellyfish Ocean. The abyss of night consumed the sky, but a faint blue light came from the water below. Butter Tiger looked over the edge, trying to paw at whatever was in the water. Wildberry Cookie looked over the edge of the raft, astonished by what was below.
Hundreds of jellyfish glowed brightly under the water, their pulsing color a hypnotic visual. Raspberry Cookie gasped, dipping her hand into the water.
"They're... pushing us!" she said, the surprise in her voice giving it a breathy tone.
It was true. The raft was going far too fast for a simple current to explain. It was hard to believe this ocean was so close to the same continent that harbored such terrible horrors. Wildberry Cookie sighed, his eyelids drooping. He tried to stay awake, but before he knew it, the raft had hit land once again.

Chapter Text
Wildberry Cookie woke up to the gentle tapping of the raft against the sandy along the shoreline.
The sand below half of the raft was powdery, not coarse. Only a few steps in front of the sand it had washed up on was a steep set of rocks, but it appeared that it could be climbed. Raspberry Cookie already stood on the shore, analyzing the rocks in front of her. Tiger Lily Cookie stirred only after being pawed at by her Butter Tiger enough times.
As Wildberry Cookie stood up, he felt a familiar dread settle in his gut. The Cookies were still in Beast-Yeast, but they were far away enough from the Garden's entrance that it looked drastically different. The land around them was barren; past the rocks, Wildberry Cookie could only see mountains without many trees or shrubs.
"Ready to climb?" Raspberry Cookie asked, stepping onto the first of the rocks. Wildberry Cookie really wasn't ready to do anything; while he knew he had to keep going, the past two days of sleeping on solid ground and rafts had definitely taken their toll on him. Still, he gave her a nod.
Raspberry Cookie began her climb, carefully stepping between rocks until she'd reached the top. When she was finished, she waved her arms back down towards the bottom. Tiger Lily Cookie got on her Butter Tiger's back, waiting for him to adjust before gently tugging him towards the rocks. The animalistic agility of the creature gave Tiger Lily Cookie an easy ascent.
The rocks weren't too daunting to Wildberry Cookie. He was more concerned about having to potentially go into the mountains than a simple climb. He stepped onto the first rock, waiting a moment to find his footing before reaching for the next rock.
When he put weight on his arm, however, a sharp pain shot through it. He winced, stumbling a bit. Raspberry Cookie's head appeared over the ledge, glancing down with concern. Wildberry Cookie used his other arm to pull himself up, finally making more progress. The climb was slow, his speed greatly diminished by the fact he couldn't use both of his arms. Once he was close enough to the top, Tiger Lily Cookie pulled him up.
He stared up at the mountains before him, dread forming within. However, a small valley with dense forests offered a way through the mountains without the unnecessary height. Tiger Lily Cookie beckoned for him and Raspberry Cookie to follow as they entered the woods, the trees blocking out the sun with their pale leaves. They looked to be on the brink of shriveling up with the yellowed color, but perhaps that was just the species.
There weren't any monsters to fight in the forest, but this also created an eerie silence. Other than the occasional noise from Tiger Lily Cookie's Butter Tiger, the only sounds were the footsteps of the Cookies.
Of course, in moments like this, Wildberry Cookie's mind would go to what had happened in the Garden. He wondered whether the Queen Mother had noticed he was gone by now, and if she would even care. Raspberry Cookie looked toward him, her expression softening.
"She'll come to her senses," Raspberry Cookie reassured him, though they both knew there was no guarantee. He hummed, and the silence of the forest returned just as quickly as it had disappeared.
After what was probably hours, Tiger Lily Cookie stopped in her tracks. She glanced around into the trees, but quickly returned to staring at the path ahead.
"Smell..." Tiger Lily Cookie whispered. Wildberry Cookie now noticed a faint aroma in the air, though it wasn't strong enough to identify just yet. As the group continued walking, the forests began to clear, as if there was something up ahead.
"The smell," Wildberry Cookie thought out loud, "it's incense."
He had only known this once before, when the villagers near the Sky God's tower had used it in various prayers. Crunchy Chip Cookie had taught it to him. Wildberry Cookie would likely never say it out loud, but that made the information infinitely more memorable to him.
When the woods opened into a clearing, a grand temple stood before the three Cookies. For something in Beast-Yeast, it was certainly in good condition. That was an obvious red flag. Tiger Lily Cookie held her hand up, signaling for them to stop. The faint chatter of Cookies could be heard in the distance. The Cookies continued walking forward, albeit more cautiously, keeping their distance from the temple.
However, an animal soon jumped out towards them from within the bushes. Raspberry Cookie jumped back, Butter Tiger whimpering. Tiger Lily Cookie was about to charge at it when Wildberry Cookie had the second to process what this animal was.
"Stop!" he shouted, stepping towards the animal. "It's a Cream Wolf."
"Wolf..." Tiger Lily Cookie said, looking back at the cowering Butter Tiger.
Wildberry Cookie thought back to when he'd lost his gauntlet in the Crème Republic. The Cream Wolves had a keen sense of smell, and they would be able to lead him towards another Cookie. He pulled out a small piece of paper, holding it out for the wolf to smell.
"You keep a letter from them?" Raspberry Cookie scoffed. Wildberry Cookie sighed, already having his regrets about talking to Raspberry Cookie.
The Cream Wolf tilted its head before turning back towards the trees, running with a purpose. Wildberry Cookie followed the animal, Raspberry Cookie and Tiger Lily Cookie close behind. The thick forests were scratching their dough, but they knew there was something worth the running. As the Cream Wolf slowed, the forests opened up to a clearing facing the ocean.
Purple tents, most being packed up, were scattered across the field. Most Cookies were too focused to notice the three outsiders, but one Cookie instantly ran up to them. She aimed her bow at the group, readying it for fire.
"State your business," the Cookie said.
"We're alone," Raspberry Cookie sighed. "We don't have food, we've been trying to find other Cookies for days."
"This may be an odd question," Wildberry Cookie interjected, "but do you happen to know Crunchy Chip Cookie...?"
Wildberry Cookie saw the other Cookie processing. Her tense expression softened, and she lowered her bow. She looked him up and down. She sighed, shutting her eyes for a moment.
"I'll lead you to the wolves' tents." The Cookie beckoned for the others to follow, turning the heads of those around the group. Wildberry Cookie didn't like the stares, but back home, he was used to them. His reputation among the noble houses of the Hollyberry Kingdom wasn't exactly pristine.
As they approached a set of larger tents, the Cookie with the bow held up her hand to keep the Cookies back. She approached a smaller tent in the middle, speaking to the Cookie within it.
"Captain," she asked, waiting for a response.
"First Watcher?" a voice replied, stopping Wildberry Cookie from thinking for a few moments. He wasn't prepared for this, was he? He was disheveled and needed sleep desperately, and making a fool of himself in front of a Cookie he held in such high esteem was certainly not going to help his current mood.
"There's a Cookie here who says he knows you," the First Watcher explained, lowering her voice slightly. Wildberry Cookie barely made out what she was saying. "Super tall, looks Hollyberrian- wait, maybe not. I can't tell-"
Before she could finish, she was shoved to the side as Crunchy Chip Cookie ran out of the tent and towards Wildberry Cookie. He stopped when he was close enough to see the state that Wildberry Cookie was in, his eyes widening.
"Great Mountains," Crunchy Chip Cookie whispered. "What happened?! Are you okay?!"
"I was about to ask of your wellbeing as well," Wildberry Cookie murmured, already feeling that sickening yet exhilarating feeling Pavlova Cookie would have reminded him of whenever possible.
Crunchy Chip Cookie's eyes traveled all over him. His wide gaze narrowed when it landed on Wildberry Cookie's cheek, and he jumped on a nearby crate to get a closer look.
"Who... what happened to you, Wildberry Cookie?" he asked, lifting his hand and tracing the healing wound. Wildberry Cookie, if his willpower hadn't been developed over the years, would have instantly melted at the gesture of care. Now wasn't the time for those feelings, and Wildberry Cookie knew that.
"I'm okay now," Wildberry Cookie dismissed, though he watched the concern grow in his friend's eyes. "I promise you, Crunchy Chip Cookie."
"If I find the Cookie who did this," Crunchy Chip Cookie whispered sharply, "they won't know what's coming."
"Would you happen to have any spare tents for myself and my colleagues to rest?" Wildberry Cookie asked, trying to distract the other Cookie. Crunchy Chip Cookie lowered his hand from the other's face. Wildberry Cookie felt a chill run across the scar that the Captain had been protecting for the past moments.
"Well, we're packing up to sail back to the Dark Cacao Kingdom," the Captain sighed. "If you're in need of refuge, I'm sure His Majesty will be understanding."
Wildberry Cookie was grateful that, whether intentionally or not, Crunchy Chip Cookie hadn't asked why there was not Hollyberry Cookie alongside him. The First Watcher, who Wildberry Cookie still had no name for, began helping Crunchy Chip Cookie pack up his supplies. The Hollyberrian Cookies joined in, Raspberry Cookie walking up next to Wildberry Cookie.
"So, that's him?" she chuckled, Wildberry Cookie feeling his face heat up. This was certainly going to be a great thing to deal with in the coming days.
It was better than the Garden. He'd pick this over the Garden a thousand times again.

Chapter Text
The Licorice Sea had a reputation among Dark Cacao Warriors for being the roughest waters on Earthbread.
Not many of them had traveled on other oceans, to be fair, but Wildberry Cookie wasn't about to argue with some of the strongest Cookies in the world. Especially considering they had been absolutely right.
From what the more experienced seafarers had said, the current state of the Licorice Sea was actually the calmest it had been in years. The fact that it was even possible to sail on was already surprising to most of the warriors. The calm waterways in the Hollyberry Kingdom weren't like this though.
Wildberry Cookie glanced around the small cabin he was in. Though he couldn't see much, the lantern hung on the far wall of the room made a few things visible. Crunchy Chip Cookie slept on the floor, one of the Cream Wolves curled up next to him. The rest of the wolves were in their beds, sleeping just as soundly. Raspberry Cookie, Tiger Lily Cookie, and the First Watcher had taken another place to sleep, so it was just Wildberry Cookie and Crunchy Chip Cookie.
The thin mat Wildberry Cookie had been given to sleep on was comfortable enough, but the ship was practically throwing him around the cabin. After who knows how long, he had given up on sleep for the night, and left to stand on the deck.
As he exited the cabin, he made sure the door behind him closed quietly. Crunchy Chip Cookie was sleeping, and Wildberry Cookie knew that was something he desperately needed. He walked up a set of stairs, careful to avoid their creaking until he made it onto the deck.
The breeze hit him, already far colder than Wildberry Cookie had been expecting. He walked towards the railing at the edge of the deck, staring toward the waters below him.
At this time of night, it was impossible to see anything beyond the reflection of the moon across the depths of the sea. It was like looking out into an abyss. While some would be disturbed (even frightened) by this, Wildberry Cookie found a strange sense of peace in it. He had been surrounded by bright pinks and vibrant greens and neon yellows for what had felt like a lifetime, and his eyes were finally starting to rest.
"I couldn't sleep on the journey here either," that familiar, rough sounding yet so warm and sweet, voice said from behind him. Crunchy Chip Cookie walked up next to Wildberry Cookie. "Still, I never slept that great to begin with."
"Maybe it's from sleeping without a proper mattress..." Wildberry Cookie muttered, earning a scoff and a playful smack from the other Cookie. "I didn't mean to wake you up with my exit. I can relate to you on the front of sleep, especially due to..."
He didn't want to dump any more of his burden on Crunchy Chip Cookie; the Captain had gotten him and his allies to safety and been kind to him, and he wasn't going to ask any more of him. The other Cookie looked up at him, still filled with worries.
"I know you and Hollyberry Cookie are close," he sighed. "If you ever need someone to talk to, the Cream Wolves and I will be there, you hear?"
He didn't speak of Hollyberry Cookie as already being beyond saving, and Wildberry Cookie appreciated it. The Light of Passion was only weakened, not faded. The care that Crunchy Chip Cookie had in every word made Wildberry Cookie thank the stars there was no Pavlova Cookie anywhere around.
"You don't have to stand here," Wildberry Cookie assured him. "I know you're not too fond of being at sea."
"A Cookie can't worry for his friends anymore?" Crunchy Chip Cookie protested, though his wobbling legs weren't doing him any favors. "You came without Hollyberry Cookie, looking like a lost puppy with scratches on his dough."
"Hollyberry Cookie's beast counterpart was..." Wildberry Cookie paused, unsure how to continue his words, "rather enticing."
Crunchy Chip Cookie gave an empathetic nod. Wildberry Cookie knew little of the Dark Cacao Kingdom's history with their former heir, but he knew enough to understand how many Cookies of the kingdom were familiar with the manipulative ways of dark forces.
Even though Crunchy Chip Cookie was clearly uncomfortable with being on the water, Wildberry Cookie was comforted by his presence. In general, Crunchy Chip Cookie was just a comforting Cookie. Sure, Wildberry Cookie was biased, but it couldn't just be him who thought that. There were plenty of Cream Wolves who followed Crunchy Chip Cookie like he'd created the Great Icing Ridge itself.
They stood there for a moment, but Wildberry Cookie began to shiver. Crunchy Chip Cookie glanced at him, smiling. Wildberry Cookie tilted his head at the other Cookie, but seeing that smile was plenty good at warming him up.
"We must be close to the Cacao Kingdom if you're getting cold," the Captain chuckled, moving closer to Wildberry Cookie. If Crunchy Chip Cookie himself wasn't already radiating heat to Wildberry Cookie, the proximity was already enough to keep Wildberry Cookie warm.
Sometimes, he wished he'd never thought too much about how he felt towards Crunchy Chip Cookie during that Cookiesmas. Maybe then, if he'd stayed oblivious to his own heart, he could tolerate the other Cookie without immediately making a fool of himself. Even if he'd never named the feelings, though, they would have still been there. He would still feel this way, whether he knew it was romantic or not.
"Let's go back in," Crunchy Chip Cookie said, his expression uneasy. "I don't want you, uh... getting sick..."
"You're more likely to get sick from being out here," Wildberry Cookie replied, still walking back down the stairs towards the cabin they had been staying in. Crunchy Chip Cookie grumbled, but he couldn't object.
The cabin was much darker now that Wildberry Cookie had adjusted to the moonlight outside, but that was a good thing. It didn't take much effort for him to fall back asleep, the water seeming to calm down.
He'd be alright. Everything would be alright in the end.

Chapter 5: those who stay
Summary:
hollyberry cookie dreams of a memory.
Chapter Text
The summer heat and suffocating crowds in the Grandberry Market were both part of why Hollyberry Cookie enjoyed it.
Today, however, the crowds were more of a stampede. As the Cookies rushed from stall to stall, buying their goods from the kind merchants, Hollyberry Cookie had ended up choosing to cut through an alleyway to travel back towards her home. Just as she was about to make it through, a young Cookie crashed into her.
"Watch where you're standing," the Cookie grumbled. He glared at Hollyberry Cookie.
The Cookie was scratched up, the marks on his dough evidence of far too much fighting for such a young one. Hollyberry Cookie's heart sank at the sight of any Cookie living on the streets, especially a child.
"I'm not so sure that's a way to speak to other Cookies," Hollyberry Cookie replied, chuckling slightly. The young Cookie, however, didn't seem to appreciate her guidance. He raised his fists, clearly trying to start a fight. "You...?"
"I'll show you how strong I am!" the young Cookie said, though his voice wavered slightly.
"Alright then," Hollyberry Cookie laughed, "let's see what you're made of!"
She wasn't going to hurt the young Cookie, but she knew he had been misguided by the other Cookies of the street. To his credit, he could certainly fight well for his age, but Hollyberry Cookie had gone all across Earthbread. The other Cookie was clearly getting tired, and as he raised his hand for one final punch, Hollyberry Cookie gently lifted her shield from beneath her cloak.
The young Cookie's eyes widened in recognition, and he staggered back. He knelt down in front of Hollyberry Cookie, still panting from the brawl moments earlier.
"Oh, stand up, kid!" Hollyberry Cookie chuckled. The young Cookie was shaking as he slowly got to his feet. "That's your lesson for today. Be careful what you say and what you do."
"Y-yes, your Majesty..." the young Cookie finally managed to say. Hollyberry Cookie glanced at the Clock Tower on the other side of the alleyway.
"Hm..." she thought out loud. "This time tomorrow, meet me here. I think you could do with some more practice, yes?"
The Cookie's eyes lit up, and he nodded. Hollyberry Cookie shook his hand before walking through the alley and back towards the palace.
•
Hollyberry Cookie's eyes fluttered open, briefly squinting before adjusting to the light of the Garden. Eternal Sugar Cookie was pressed against her chest, gazing at her other half's face.
"I don't imagine I'm that pretty while I sleep," Hollyberry Cookie chuckled. She pressed a kiss to Eternal Sugar Cookie's forehead.
"You're beautiful regardless, my dearest," Eternal Sugar Cookie whispered back. She sat up, yawning. "You were dreaming."
"I was," Hollyberry Cookie replied. Eternal Sugar Cookie's expression shifted slightly.
This had been more common lately. Hollyberry Cookie had seen her other half deeper in thought, the Soul Jam on her head flickering. She'd spent so much time staring at the Cookies in the jars of jam, her face unlike anything Hollyberry Cookie had seen of her.
"Dearest," Eternal Sugar Cookie said, "tell me more about the Hollyberry Kingdom."
That was another thing Hollyberry Cookie had seen from her lover lately. She'd been curious about what life was like outside the garden. Hollyberry Cookie sighed, unsure of where to begin. Her kingdom was a diverse place, and there was so much to talk about.
"Well," Hollyberry Cookie began, "one of my favorite places was the ballroom, obviously. I would host the most splendid parties, inviting Cookies from across the whole kingdom and beyond to attend. There would be luxury and dancing and juice, lots of juice."
"Were you happy?" Eternal Sugar Cookie asked. Hollyberry Cookie nodded, the fondest of her memories from those occasions flooding back to her.
"Wildberry Cookie hated them," Hollyberry Cookie chuckled. "Secretly, I don't think he minded them much. He just preferred the quiet."
The air grew solemn. It had been a few days with no sign of Wildberry Cookie. Hollyberry Cookie had grown worried for him, along with Raspberry Cookie and Tiger Lily Cookie. Eternal Sugar Cookie had offered to summon Wildberry Cookie back to the garden at the snap of a finger, but Hollyberry Cookie had refused. She knew that if he truly sought happiness, he would return to the Garden when he was ready.
Had she made the right decision? Sometimes, she felt selfish for what she'd done. Hollyberry Cookie wanted nothing more than to protect the Cookies of her kingdom from Dark Enchantress Cookie, once and for all. But was that all? She had fallen in love, after all. Even after she'd eaten that berry from Tiger Lily Cookie, and some of the illusions broke, her heart had still skipped a beat around Eternal Sugar Cookie. It made her feel like a young Cookie again.
After Hollyberry Cookie's decision to stay, she had ended up under that same tree with Eternal Sugar Cookie where she had first played the lyre. They had talked for what could have been hours, gravitating toward each other. Hollyberry Cookie had admitted how fond she'd grown of Eternal Sugar Cookie, though they'd already been in a state of limbo on whether or not they were lovers. They had kissed for the first of many times under that tree.
"We could have parties here too," Eternal Sugar Cookie said. "If it would make you happy, of course."
"Your company is plenty, Eternal Sugar Cookie," Hollyberry Cookie replied.
"I certainly don't mind having you all to myself," she giggled. "I'll be at the Mulled Juice baths."
"Alright, alright..." Hollyberry Cookie chuckled. "I'll have to get up, then."
As she stood up, she reflected more on the memory that had visited her in her dreams. Royal Berry Cookie and Jungleberry Cookie were in the Garden, and she cared for them, but she wanted all of her family. If she'd truly made the right decision, Wildberry Cookie would be back to accept the Garden as his new home soon enough.
Raspberry Cookie and Tiger Lily Cookie had gone with him, after all. But could they truly face the monsters that were outside of the Garden? It pained Hollyberry Cookie to think about it, but had they even made it very far before the hordes of beasts attacked them?
No, it wasn't possible. Wildberry Cookie would be fine. He was strong, Hollyberry Cookie had made sure of that over the years. He would be fine on his own, and with Raspberry Cookie and Tiger Lily Cookie, he would be plenty safe.
What would become of her kingdom? Would Pitaya Dragon Cookie go looking for her, only to find deserted streets? Would Tarte Tatin Cookie visit her, only to instead see the palace empty? Would her dear friends need her aid in fighting Dark Enchantress Cookie?
"My dearest?" Eternal Sugar Cookie asked, poking her head back through the vines into the courtyard where she slept. "Are you coming?"
Hollyberry Cookie nodded, blinking a few times to clear her head. She had made the right choice in staying here. Her doubts consuming her was exactly why she'd chosen to stay here; she could finally find peace from what burdened her in the rest of the world. She had offered the Cookies of her kingdom eternal peace, the ability to dream of whatever they desired. Still, she hoped the ones who had gotten away would turn back and accept what she had given them.
If they didn't, maybe her decision hadn't been the right one after all.

Chapter Text
The dread that had been lifted from Wildberry Cookie's shoulders after stepping foot on Crispia was substantial.
There was still so much uncertainty. What would they do about the Queen Mother? Who would take care of the Hollyberry Kingdom? However, these questions had been much heavier while in Beast-Yeast. Now, with familiar Cookies by his side, Wildberry Cookie felt less despair.
After getting off of the boat this morning, Wildberry Cookie had been practically dragged by Crunchy Chip Cookie to the Citadel's armory for some clothes that were weather appropriate. He'd gotten some glares from the Cookies of the Dark Cacao Kingdom, but they were more preoccupied with recovering from the Pale Ailment. He'd received the summary of the Pale Ailment's effects on the kingdom from the First Watcher (who he now remembered was named Caramel Arrow Cookie) and was horrified. All things considered, Eternal Sugar Cookie had been the least aggressive of the Beasts.
King Dark Cacao Cookie had insisted on meeting with the Cookies of the Hollyberry Kingdom as soon as possible, which ended up being in the early afternoon of the day they made it back to Crispia. He'd been tidying up in the infirmary, checking back in with Raspberry Cookie and Tiger Lily Cookie when Crunchy Chip Cookie entered.
"His Majesty has requested to see all three of you," the Captain said, beckoning for them to follow him. Wildberry Cookie nodded, standing and walking towards the door. Raspberry Cookie, though slightly reluctant, trailed behind. Tiger Lily Cookie had to struggle with a sleeping Butter Tiger before giving up and following the other Cookies on her own.
The halls of the Inner Citadel were hard to place on the line between indoor and outdoor. They were full of open shutters, many of which looked like they had never been closed to begin with. The snow outside was only lightly falling, but the air was still far more cold than Wildberry Cookie was used to.
Crunchy Chip Cookie held open a large door, the three other Cookies entering a fully enclosed room before he continued alongside them. A round table was set up in the center of the room, almost reminiscent of the Council of Heroes. Wildberry Cookie smiled to himself, the simpler days in the Vanilla Kingdom coming back to him.
Dark Cacao Cookie sat in a large, throne-like seat at the head of the table, with Caramel Arrow Cookie to his right and another Cookie to his left. Wildberry Cookie stood in front of a seat between an empty chair and Raspberry Cookie, Tiger Lily Cookie ending up between Raspberry Cookie and Caramel Arrow Cookie.
"Your Majesty," Crunchy Chip Cookie said, Wildberry Cookie recognizing his true diplomat voice. It brought him even further back to the days of the Council, "I present Wildberry Cookie, Raspberry Cookie, and Tiger Lily Cookie of the Hollyberry Kingdom."
Wildberry Cookie bowed deeply before taking a seat, Raspberry Cookie quickly doing the same as both him and Tiger Lily Cookie. She sighed, clearly not used to how intimidating a Cookie like Dark Cacao Cookie could be.
"This Cookie is the Second Watcher," Dark Cacao Cookie explained, the unfamiliar Cookie nodding his head in respect. "He has been taking care of the Kingdom as we ventured to Beast-Yeast."
The Second Watcher glanced at all of them before looking back towards the king. Wildberry Cookie noticed certain ornaments on his uniform that resembled those of Caramel Arrow Cookie, probably something used by the Watchers.
"From what I've come to understand," the King continued, his voice taking on a more sensitive tone, "Hollyberry Cookie has fallen to the Beast she shares a Soul Jam with."
"That's correct," Raspberry Cookie replied, worry all over her face. "She'll come to her senses, though. I know it."
"We have no chance at succeeding against Dark Enchantress Cookie if we are to remain without all five of the Ancient Heroes," Dark Cacao Cookie explained. "For the sake of Earthbread, we must return to Beast-Yeast with the proper reinforcements to assist Hollyberry Cookie."
"Is she alright?" Caramel Arrow Cookie asked. Wildberry Cookie sighed, clearing his throat.
"Her Beast counterpart and her were rather..." Wildberry Cookie began, unable to find the words. He found it hard to discuss the topic of romance in general, but it was nearly impossible to do so in the presence of Crunchy Chip Cookie. "She fell in love."
"Of course she did..." Dark Cacao Cookie sighed, clearly having seen this in Hollyberry Cookie before. "What do you know of this other Cookie?"
"Sweet, too sweet..." Tiger Lily Cookie muttered, her eyes wide.
"Her name is Eternal Sugar Cookie," Wildberry Cookie said. "She formerly held the Soul Jam of Happiness, but it corrupted into Sloth. Her domain is a plane hidden from the rest of Beast-Yeast, known as the Garden of Sweet Delights. She was very... forthcoming with her feelings towards Hollyberry Cookie."
"What's so bad about that...?" the Second Watcher questioned, earning a glare from Crunchy Chip Cookie.
"The land was filled with many temptations, but..." Wildberry Cookie continued, though his voice wavered. The reminders of what had happened in Beast-Yeast felt too soon. "When anyone tried to leave Eternal Sugar Cookie's domain, she would 'bless' them with a sweet scent that attracted vicious monsters."
"She did that to you?!" Crunchy Chip Cookie yelled, standing up. Wildberry Cookie knew he had a tendency to get angry, but it wasn't this serious most of the time. "Oh, when I get my hands on this Cookie-"
"Captain, I believe Wildberry Cookie has more to say," Caramel Arrow Cookie reminded him. The Captain slumped back into his chair. Wildberry Cookie felt that familiar warmth, that dangerous feeling, budding inside him once again. Now was not the time for this.
"Eternal Sugar Cookie kept many Cookies slumbering in..." Wildberry Cookie said, swallowing hard before continuing, "jars of jam."
Dark Cacao Cookie's eyes widened, the purple of his Soul Jam flashing almost blindingly. He gripped his sword tightly. Caramel Arrow Cookie and the Second Watcher had gasped, the horror evident on their faces. Crunchy Chip Cookie scanned Wildberry Cookie's face.
"If it hadn't been for my brief time in that jar, however," Wildberry Cookie sighed, "I would not have escaped the Garden and been able to seek proper help."
"She put you in jam...?" Crunchy Chip Cookie asked. The anger that had been in his voice moments before was replaced with terror. Wildberry Cookie felt his heart ache at the sight of this other Cookie so worried for him.
"I apologize for making you explain such... horrific experiences," Dark Cacao Cookie said, clearing his throat. "Now, the three of you know much about Hollyberry Cookie's recent adventures, and I was hoping you would know of any other allies."
Raspberry Cookie shook her head, defeated. Tiger Lily Cookie looked at Dark Cacao Cookie, confused.
"We've only just met Tiger Lily Cookie," Raspberry Cookie sighed, "and I've never traveled far with the Queen Mother. You are her most prominent ally."
Wildberry Cookie closed his eyes for a moment, reflecting on every expedition he'd accompanied Hollyberry Cookie on. Every letter she had sent, every Cookie she had mentioned. Dark Cacao Cookie was one of the most frequent ones. Who else could possibly-
Oh no.
"I know a Cookie," Wildberry Cookie finally replied. The reluctance in his voice was obvious. "They tend to ask for things in return, but... I believe they will be very important in not only rescuing the Queen Mother but protecting the Hollyberry Kingdom in her absence as well."
"What are we waiting for, then?" Crunchy Chip Cookie asked, standing up. "I'll ready one of the wolves."
"The environment of this land is..." Wildberry Cookie explained, "rather extreme. Your Cream Wolf may be uncomfortable."
"Where, exactly, are you referring to?" Caramel Arrow Cookie interrupted.
"The Dragon City, from where we can reach the home of the Greenish-Red Dragon," Wildberry Cookie said, still annoyed by the mention of the place. "I believe it can be reached by balloon."
"Caramel Arrow Cookie, Second Watcher," Dark Cacao Cookie instructed, "take care of our guests. I will be departing with Crunchy Chip Cookie and Wildberry Cookie tonight."
"So soon?" the First Watcher gasped. "We've only just returned, your Majesty."
"Exactly," he assured her. "I must keep the momentum if I am to negotiate with a dragon. Captain?"
"Yes, sir?" Crunchy Chip Cookie replied.
"Meet me with Wildberry Cookie at the balloon port at nightfall," the King finished, nodding to the other Cookies. They bowed before taking their leave, Wildberry Cookie staying by Crunchy Chip Cookie's side.
Wildberry Cookie was dreading the visit to the Dragon City. While the familiar company of Tarte Tatin Cookie would be a comfort, Royal Margarine Cookie wouldn't do much to help the state he was in. Besides, if he were to be recognized, Cookies would start asking about Sweet Pinkyberry Cookie, and he wouldn't have an answer.
As the balloon lifted off the ground, Wildberry Cookie shut his eyes, sitting on the floor of the basket to avoid knowing how high up he was. He knew that the fear of heights was irrational, but that didn't do much to prevent his anxieties. He had enough stress, and while things were going well for now, it was only a matter of time.
Notes:
a few clarifying notes, since i know a few things don't make sense with worldbuilding:
- dark cacao cookie has a room for foreign guests to hold meetings, hence why they're not sitting on the floor.
- i actually don't know if there's a way to get to the dragon city other than by foot but we'll go with it
- tags are getting updated to match the next few chaptersraspberry, carrow, tiger lily, and company are not cut yet they will be there more later on i promise i js need wildchip

Chapter Text
"Remind me to always listen to you," Crunchy Chip Cookie groaned, walking through the streets of the Dragon City. He dragged the top three layers of his coats behind him, his face covered in sweat.
Wildberry Cookie had offered to carry both the jackets and Crunchy Chip Cookie himself, both of which were met with protests. King Dark Cacao Cookie kept a cloak over his armor, similar to how Hollyberry Cookie would travel in public. His eyes, however, darted towards a few dragon hunting guilds.
Dark Cacao Cookie and Hollyberry Cookie had both conquered dragons, but Dark Cacao Cookie had managed two at the same time. Not only that, he'd replicated the feat again when in Beast-Yeast. Still, those dragons weren't as well known among most of the Dragon City's denizens.
The Dragon City was rebuilding well. While there was still many tents and lots of scaffolding, a good portion of the buildings were standing strong. Despite Wildberry Cookie's disdain for the Dragon's Valley, the Dragon City wasn't terrible. Sure, they indulged in Dragonwing Fireade excessively, but compared to the other places Wildberry Cookie had been, it was alright.
"At least you didn't bring a Cream Wolf," Wildberry Cookie sighed. Dark Cacao Cookie hummed, and Crunchy Chip Cookie rolled his eyes. Wildberry Cookie suppressed a smile, averting his gaze from the other two Cookies.
Standing right where it had been a few years ago was the Dragonclaw Inn, still bustling with business. Wildberry Cookie gestured for the other two Cookies to follow him, holding open the door for them. The door to the Inn closed behind them, Crunchy Chip Cookie immediately letting out a sigh of relief. The ceiling fan of the Inn offered a slight breeze, which was more than enough for the Cacao Warrior to stop being dangerously close to heat stroke.
"You there!" Innkeeper Cookie said, pointing her ladle at Wildberry Cookie. "I know you, don't I?"
Wildberry Cookie nodded. As he was about to explain, she shushed him.
"It's on the tip of my tongue..." she continued, her eyes shut tightly. The Inn was slightly bigger than it had been before, and a small photograph of the successful Dragon Hunters after their battle with the Red Dragon was hung up. Standing front and center was none other than Hollyberry Cookie.
Many of the other Cookies of the Inn were crowded into one corner, masking another from view. Crunchy Chip Cookie eyed the Dragonskin Pies on various tables suspiciously. Wildberry Cookie wasn't very fond of how tight and loud the Inn was, but he knew that Crunchy Chip Cookie needed to cool down. Just as he was about to order a water, he heard the Cookie in the far corner.
"Wildberry Cookie?" the voice called out. Crunchy Chip Cookie looked towards the Cookie in the corner before Wildberry Cookie himself did. Dark Cacao Cookie looked between the two sides of the Inn, clearly confused.
"Tarte Tatin Cookie," Wildberry Cookie greeted. Tarte Tatin Cookie shooed away the Cookies gathered around her, opening three seats up to accommodate the group of Cookies.
"Where is Hollyberry Cookie?" Tarte Tatin Cookie whispered, Wildberry Cookie's face going dark. Crunchy Chip Cookie gently touched his arm, a quiet comfort among all the noise.
"Perhaps it is better discussed in a more private setting," Dark Cacao Cookie said, Tarte Tatin Cookie jumping at the sudden noise.
"Oh, where are my manners?" she laughed, taking another sip of the Fireade in her hands. "I see you've brought companions with you."
"Let us get a room upstairs before discussing any more details about the Ancient Heroes," Wildberry Cookie stated. As he stood up, Crunchy Chip Cookie's hand lingered on his arm for a moment before it fell.
Tarte Tatin Cookie was a good ally. She was trustworthy, something that many Cookies lacked in the modern world. Wildberry Cookie looked up to her; if Hollyberry Cookie was his mother, Tarte Tatin Cookie was that aunt who you don't see often but still makes you feel safe. He retrieved a key from Innkeeper Cookie, gesturing for the Cookies at the table to follow him upstairs.
The rooms of the Inn were small, but they were private enough to allow for conversation. Wildberry Cookie locked the door securely behind the four of them, drawing the curtains shut before gesturing for Tarte Tatin Cookie to take a seat.
"Who are these companions of yours, Wildberry Cookie?" she asked, smiling at the two Cookies. Dark Cacao Cookie took the hood of his cloak off, sighing.
"I'm... an old friend of a dragon hunter," Dark Cacao Cookie said. Crunchy Chip Cookie's face twisted in confusion. "Though I'm not sure he's spent much time here."
"I see," Tarte Tatin Cookie replied. "There's plenty of daylight left, I'm sure you can check most of the guilds in the city in that time."
"This is Crunchy Chip Cookie," Wildberry Cookie explained, drawing the focus back to introductions. The Captain smiled at Tarte Tatin Cookie, though its effects were much more prominent in Wildberry Cookie's heart.
Tarte Tatin Cookie wasn't smiling for very long, though. Wildberry Cookie shared the agony with her when she heard of what had happened in Beast-Yeast. He still felt himself shaking at the description of the Garden, the fear of waking up back in that so-called paradise always somewhere deep in his mind.
The Dragon Hunter listened quietly, the terror on her face barely masked. Dark Cacao Cookie did most of the explaining, though Wildberry Cookie would elaborate on certain parts of the Garden when needed. After the recap of recent events was finished, she spoke.
"We need Pitaya Dragon Cookie," she sighed. "They're the closest thing we have to an Ancient Hero."
Wildberry Cookie glanced at Dark Cacao Cookie. Though it was reasonable to keep his identity hidden in public, he had a suspicion that he was waiting for something. Crunchy Chip Cookie opened his mouth to protest, but Wildberry Cookie quickly intervened.
"I'm thirsty for a Dragonwing Punch," Wildberry Cookie said, standing up from where he'd been sitting. Tarte Tatin Cookie muttered something about another Fireade under her breath, and the silent decision was made to go back down to the loud part of the Inn.
It seemed, however, another Cookie had taken the attention of nearly all others. Right by the entrance of the tavern, a Cookie with a spear was laughing with the patrons of the Inn. From the crowd, Wildberry Cookie picked out mentions of the Cuckoo Town Square's guild. Dark Cacao Cookie, however, looked shocked.
When Dark Cacao Cookie locked eyes with this other Cookie, the Inn went silent.
"Captain...?" Dark Cacao Cookie asked, Crunchy Chip Cookie looking up at him.
"Sir, I'm right here-" he tried to say before Wildberry Cookie shushed him.
"You don't say," Tarte Tatin Cookie chuckled. "He didn't tell me he was friends with one of the best Dragon Hunters on Earthbread."
"You're alive," Dark Cacao Cookie said. Wildberry Cookie hadn't seen much of the king, but if Crunchy Chip Cookie's expression was anything to go by, the shock on his face was certainly unfamiliar.
"Your Majesty...?" the Cookie with the spear asked. The crowd of Cookies split, watching the exchange like a drama on stage.
This other Dragon Hunter was clearly a Cacao Warrior. Crunchy Chip Cookie squinted at the Cookie for a moment, muttering under his breath about having seen the face somewhere before. Wildberry Cookie loved seeing Crunchy Chip Cookie do that. It was endearing to see the Captain's expressions change in a matter of seconds.
"Chocolate Bark Cookie," Tarte Tatin Cookie greeted, though it didn't break whatever was going on between Dark Cacao Cookie and the Cookie in question.
"Hate to break it to you," Chocolate Bark Cookie chuckled, "but I don't crumble that easily."

Chapter Text
The evening in the Dragon City was, if anything, even more lively than the daytime. Cookies in the Dragonclaw Inn shared wild stories and legends, all a few drinks of Dragonwing Fireade down. It was too much for Wildberry Cookie.
He stared at the sky, the stars just beginning to emerge as the sun finally set. It seemed the rooftop of the Inn wasn't set up to be an extension of the building's entertainment space, and Wildberry Cookie had some breathing room.
Even though heights usually made him nervous, the rooftop was strangely comforting. The concrete was still warm from the day's heat, and as long as Wildberry Cookie didn't glance over the edge of the rooftop, he would be fine.
The constellations above him were the very same he'd seen on the Jellyfish Sea, floating on that raft. They were so much more beautiful from the view of Crispia. The way they were scattered across the sky reminded him of the chocolate chips sprinkled in Crunchy Chip Cookie's hair.
Whether the universe was reading his thoughts or by coincidence, the hatch leading up to the rooftop opened. Crunchy Chip Cookie hoisted himself onto the roof, joining Wildberry Cookie in sitting with his back to the raised edges of the roof.
"Didn't think you'd be up here," Crunchy Chip Cookie said. "Even though it's hot out, anything beats being cooped up inside."
"I concur," Wildberry Cookie replied.
Oftentimes, comfortable silence fell between them. It almost mimicked that time they had to wait between each letter. Crunchy Chip Cookie turned to look at Wildberry Cookie.
"I know you don't really like talking about it," Crunchy Chip Cookie sighed. "But... how did you even end up in the Garden?"
Well, there was an answer to that question. An answer that would lead to more questions at which point Wildberry Cookie would either have to admit his affections without any preparation or figure out some way to get out of the interrogation. However, he couldn't bring himself to lie to Crunchy Chip Cookie. He only lied to keep himself and others out of critical danger, and his feelings didn't count for that.
"There was... a Cookie," Wildberry Cookie began. "He knew a very... personal detail about me. My fellow warriors believed him to be a fraud, but I couldn't deny what he had said. Their mockery, however, upset him enough that he transported us to the Garden."
"A personal detail?" Crunchy Chip Cookie asked.
Wildberry Cookie felt his heart beating faster. He wasn't doing this tonight, in the Dragon City of all places. He never planned on doing this at all, but if it did happen, it certainly wouldn't be here.
"Perhaps, as time goes on, I'll be more comfortable sharing," Wildberry Cookie dismissed. Crunchy Chip Cookie rested his hand on top of Wildberry Cookie's, still gazing at the stars.
"You know I'll be here," Crunchy Chip Cookie said. "No matter what it is."
Wildberry Cookie nodded, grateful for the setting sun already casting a red glow on everything. Even as it got cooler outside, he still struggled to keep himself together, not immediately professing his love to Crunchy Chip Cookie on that rooftop.
"I don't think I ever told you I missed you," the Captain commented. "Even when you were there for the whole tower thing, we barely got to talk."
"I missed you too," Wildberry Cookie whispered, averting his eyes. Crunchy Chip Cookie squeezed his hand tighter. The familiar silence filled the air, though it felt more active. Something was in the atmosphere, an electricity waiting for the smallest of sparks to fill the air with fireworks.
"It was you who bought me that pie and had Innkeeper Cookie say it was on the house," Crunchy Chip Cookie accused, though he wasn't upset in any way, "wasn't it?"
"Did you enjoy it?" Wildberry Cookie asked. Crunchy Chip Cookie frantically shook his head.
"I'm a Cacao Warrior!" Crunchy Chip Cookie protested. "Sweets aren't part of my diet whatsoever!"
"So you threw it away?" Wildberry Cookie questioned.
"Well, I wasn't going to waste good food," Crunchy Chip Cookie stammered. "I, uh... I ate most of it. That doesn't mean I liked it though...! Besides, you should be saving your coins."
"If you say so," Wildberry Cookie said.
"The Herring Jelly Pie was better..." the Captain grumbled. Wildberry Cookie chuckled, his fondness for Crunchy Chip Cookie growing dangerously high. He pressed a kiss to the top of Crunchy Chip Cookie's head, the regret immediately setting in.
Strangely, though, Crunchy Chip Cookie didn't move away. His hand stayed on top of Wildberry Cookie's, even after he briefly sputtered at the moment of contact. Wildberry Cookie couldn't meet his eyes.
"We should retire for the night," Wildberry Cookie said. "The Dragon's Valley requires a lot of endurance, especially for a Cookie not well adjusted to the heat."
Wildberry Cookie stood up, Crunchy Chip Cookie's hand slipping off of his own. As he reached down to help the Captain up, their hands stayed together for a few moments longer. Something was there, unspoken between the both of them.
There was, however, a task at hand. Wildberry Cookie knew Crunchy Chip Cookie could just be tipsy or tired, and that whatever had happened on that rooftop meant nothing. Both of them needed, more than anything, a good night's rest. Pitaya Dragon Cookie would most likely want a fight to prove the worth of the Cookies asking for their support.
As Wildberry Cookie drifted off, however, his impulsive decision was replaying in his mind. The silence that had followed, the regret. The lack of disgust or anger from Crunchy Chip Cookie. The words of Pavlova Cookie, distant and near forgotten:
"You know well that it won't work out, but you have no intention of giving up!"
He was a Hollyberrian. True Hollyberrians didn't give up, no matter what they faced. He knew Pavlova Cookie had changed since then, his own feelings for Sugarfly Cookie finally made obvious to him. They had even spent time discussing Crunchy Chip Cookie, Pavlova Cookie finally beginning to understand love and all its complexities.
Maybe, though, he could have been wrong. Maybe everything would work out.

Chapter Text
Three is a crowd.
This crowd, consisting of Wildberry Cookie, Crunchy Chip Cookie, and Dark Cacao Cookie, had almost doubled. One of these Cookies was a trusted ally, while the other one was, to Wildberry Cookie, just someone who tagged along.
Okay, that wasn't right. He had some history with Dark Cacao Cookie, a history that Tarte Tatin Cookie had given Wildberry Cookie plenty of unimpressed looks about. Crunchy Chip Cookie had been mortified when they'd somehow managed to get the King to drink a cup of Fireade, which led to him fighting a fake plant in the corner. Of all the things Wildberry Cookie expected to happen twice in his life, seeing an Ancient Hero get intoxicated and pick a fight with a plant was at the bottom of the list.
Tarte Tatin Cookie had admitted she knew Dark Cacao Cookie was the 'friend of the dragon hunter' the moment he spoke. The dragon hunter in question had turned out to be Chocolate Bark Cookie, who was a good generation and a half older than Crunchy Chip Cookie and Wildberry Cookie. He made a joke or pun every other sentence, but it was definitely an energy that could be useful.
After a brief interaction with Royal Margarine Cookie, who had thankfully refrained from flirting with Crunchy Chip Cookie, the group of Cookies had walked through the Dragon's Valley towards the nest of the Greenish-Red Dragon. Chocolate Bark Cookie had been the main source of conversation, telling stories of everywhere he'd traveled.
"It's been so long since I've seen the snow..." Chocolate Bark Cookie said. "Not that I miss it. It may be my home, but so much has changed. Though there are times I should have been there..."
The silence that hung in the air seemed to resonate with Dark Cacao Cookie and Crunchy Chip Cookie. The Captain tensed up, Wildberry Cookie glancing down at him. They had written about Affogato Cookie once or twice, but Wildberry Cookie could never empathize all the way. It gave him a sense of guilt; Crunchy Chip Cookie was so good at feeling for others, but he could never get it quite right.
Tarte Tatin Cookie had been leading the way through the Dragon's Valley, commenting about the fact she'd made the journey semi-regularly. As the Cookies approached the Red Dragon's Nest, it only grew hotter. The seasoned dragon hunter of the bunch took the first step inside, Wildberry Cookie watching her. She gestured for the rest of the Cookies to enter the nest.
"Is the Hollyberry Kingdom this hot...?" Crunchy Chip Cookie groaned, Wildberry Cookie keeping a smile down.
Suddenly, Tarte Tatin Cookie was nearly knocked off her feet by a creature. Chocolate Bark Cookie, Dark Cacao Cookie, and Crunchy Chip Cookie immediately got on their guard. Chocolate Bark Cookie stared at the King's sword in awe, whispering something about the way it looked now.
"Dragon...!" Crunchy Chip Cookie yelled. "Why is no one doing anything?!"
The curious Cookie hovered over towards the Captain, doing a circle around his head. Dark Cacao Cookie chuckled, Chocolate Bark Cookie clearly surprised. Tarte Tatin Cookie joined in, grabbing the Dragon Cookie out of the air.
"This is Snapdragon Cookie," she explained, the Cookie in question babbling. They stretched their arms towards Tarte Tatin Cookie's face. Wildberry Cookie remembered helping the Dragon City rebuild after Dark Enchantress Cookie's dragon had destroyed it, wondering if the Snapdragon would ever be capable of such destruction.
He sighed, knowing that they were there for more than just a reunion with a young dragon. The inside of the nest was dim, only lit by green and red flames. The only other light came faintly from Dark Cacao Cookie's Soul Jam. Wildberry Cookie walked further into the nest. He shouted into the darkness.
"Mottled Tropical Cocktail Cook-"
"Nagging Pinkyberry Cookie..." a voice hissed from the shadows. The silhouette of Pitaya Dragon Cookie was visible, and they walked forward. Their Draconic Blade pointed towards Dark Cacao Cookie. "I remember you..."
"Pitaya Dragon Cookie," Tarte Tatin Cookie acknowledged. "We need your aid."
"What has Hollyberry Cookie gotten hersssself into...?" they said.
"You're familiar with the first five Soul Jams, yes?" Dark Cacao Cookie asked.
"I had no businessss with them," Pitaya Dragon Cookie laughed.
"Hollyberry Cookie is in the domain of one of these corrupt Beast Cookies," Wildberry Cookie interjected. Pitaya Dragon Cookie's eyes flashed with anger. "This is not a battle of strength, but reminding the Queen Mother of what matters most."
"Why the two othersss, then?" the dragon questioned.
"Crunchy Chip Cookie is a... friend of mine," Wildberry Cookie explained. Pitaya Dragon Cookie's smug expression at that did nothing to help the anxiety he had about what he'd done last night. "More importantly to you, he is the guard for Dark Cacao Cookie."
"Like mother, like son..." the dragon muttered. Crunchy Chip Cookie stood more defensively. "And the other one?"
"Chocolate Bark Cookie," he introduced himself as. "I'm a Dragon Hunter."
Pitaya Dragon Cookie pondered for a moment, looking at Snapdragon Cookie the longest. They glanced at each Cookie, giving the unfamiliar ones a longer look. They sighed before laughing to themselves.
"Tarte Tatin Cookie," they said. "I trusssst you to keep watch of Snapdragon Cookie in my absence."
"Pitaya Dragon Cookie," she replied, "Hollyberry Cookie is a friend of mine as much as she is yours."
"I'm not leaving Snapdragon with the cowardly wyvern rider..." they sighed. "They're sssstill young, and they may worry the Cookies of the city should they lose their Cookie form."
"We cannot risk bringing such a young one to a land as dangerous as Beast-Yeast," Dark Cacao Cookie added.
"The only otherssss I know are less than trustworthy," Pitaya Dragon Cookie thought out loud. "I suppose the wyvern rider it isss..."
Wildberry Cookie thought about who else they may need in order to have a chance against Eternal Sugar Cookie. Golden Cheese Cookie came to mind, but the amount of Cookies they had grown their party to was far too many to make such a journey. Golden Cheese Cookie was probably still at the Crème Republic's camp in Beast-Yeast, but if she wasn't, the time wasted would be far too high for comfort.
They did need a home base, and Wildberry Cookie knew he could get the Hollyberry Palace open. He wasn't sure he had the bravery to face seeing his homeland deserted, but he had Cookies he cared about by his side. Royal Margarine Cookie swore up and down that he would take good care of Snapdragon Cookie, and the adventurers were on their way.
Wildberry Cookie hadn't spoken more than indirectly to Crunchy Chip Cookie the entire day. He could try to convince himself that everything was fine, but the doubt would always creep in. The gesture of affection from the previous night left little room for denial, but maybe he could blame it on accidentally having Fireade instead of punch.
That, or he could face the music.

Chapter Text
Every night, just as the sun dipped below the horizon, Hollyberry Cookie would meet the young street Cookie in the same alleyway they had first crossed paths in. Their fighting had turned into practice for the young Cookie, who she had been telling many tales of her adventures to.
Today was no exception. She was very proud of the young Cookie, and had started to feel the sort of bond she had felt with Royal Berry Cookie. The Cookie had been taking her lessons to heart, both in fighting and in life. He was a quiet listener, but she could tell he understood her well. After all, she had taught him in their second battle that a Cookie's actions speak louder than words.
This evening, however, she came into the alleyway to find a few other Cookies surrounding him. The three Cookies looked to be about his age, though Hollyberry Cookie could tell they had a much wealthier background. They had the Cookie backed into a corner.
Two of the Cookies looked fairly similar. They seemed to be related in some way, unlike the Cookie in the center. This Cookie, who wore a much more refined suit, was just about to strike Hollyberry Cookie's young fighting partner when he stood up and landed a punch right on the face of the neatly dressed Cookie. The two others backed away towards their fallen ally.
"That's it!" Hollyberry Cookie cheered, running to help the young Cookie up. "Are you alright?"
He nodded, though his eyes kept drifting to the Cookie he had just punched.
"Just how I taught you," she chuckled, the young Cookie leaning on her as he stood back up. The Cookie he had punched, along with his two allies, stood in shock.
"Your Majesty, thank goodness you're here," he said. "I'm in need of aid, immediately! This... street rat attacked me unprovoked!"
She sighed, looking back towards her junior sparring partner and then back at the other Cookies. When the Hollyberry Kingdom was founded, the Queen had never intended to hear such terrible things said between her denizens.
"I saw what happened," she replied. "My friend, why were these Cookies attacking you?"
He didn't respond. Something in his eyes was familiar to Hollyberry Cookie, but she couldn't place it yet. She looked back towards the neatly kept Cookie, who looked back at the other with disgust.
"It's unimportant..." he muttered. That's when it clicked for Hollyberry Cookie. This issue that she had thought the world was far past still haunted the streets of her own Grandberry Market.
"What houses do you three Cookies hail from?" she asked. Two of them were from House Cranberry, with the ringleader of the bunch being from House Bumbleberry. They looked smug, as if they had gotten away with something. The Cookie of House Bumbleberry looked back at the other Cookie one last time, his smug smile faltering slightly.
Hollyberry Cookie looked at the young Cookie to her side. He wasn't safe on the street anymore. She knew there were Cookies on the street who lived simply due to their nature, but the Cookie she had spent her recent evenings getting to know was not one of them. She beckoned for the young Cookie to follow her out of the alleyway, walking back towards the palace.
"I don't believe I ever learned your name," Hollyberry Cookie commented.
"Wildberry Cookie," the young Cookie said, still glancing behind him every few seconds.
"Well, Wildberry Cookie," she chuckled, "I've told you about my old friends, right?"
He nodded hesitantly. She knew he couldn't tell where she was going with this, but he'd figure it out soon enough.
"I don't think I mentioned how close Golden Cheese Cookie and White Lily Cookie had been for a while," Hollyberry Cookie continued. "My other friends and I would wake up in the morning only to find them sleeping side by side near the warmth of the campfire. They were a great pair, I'd say."
Wildberry Cookie looked up at her, his curious eyes searching her face for any sarcasm or cruelty. She knew he was worried.
"Say, what happened between you and this Cookie from House Bumbleberry?" she asked, glancing at the young Cookie. He had turned away from her, his shoulders tensing up. "Ah, perhaps it's too soon for me to ask. I'll have to go arrange for you to have somewhere to spend the night, anyway."
As they walked through the gates to the garden, Wildberry Cookie stopped looking behind him. He let out a sigh of relief. Hollyberry Cookie could tell this would be the first night of his life where he could sleep without worrying if he would wake up unharmed.
•
The Garden was quiet, meaning it was somewhere close to nighttime outside of their paradise. Hollyberry Cookie got out of the bed she was in, covering herself with a night robe. Eternal Sugar Cookie slept soundly behind her. She stepped through the vines onto a balcony of sorts, overlooking all of the Garden.
The dreams she'd been having lately were odd. They were less dreams and more memories visiting her, giving her reasons to regret the choice she had made for the good of her Cookies. Had she really chosen for them, or had she chosen for herself?
Eternal Sugar Cookie was Hollyberry Cookie's paradise. The memories of what had happened a few hours earlier were still fresh on her mind. She felt herself get flustered, the thoughts of the other Cookie overwhelming her.
She stared down at the long, foggy path that led back into Beast-Yeast. While her subjects were safe, Dark Enchantress Cookie still threatened everything she held dear that Eternal Sugar Cookie couldn't bring to her. What power did she have now though? Her shield had shattered, the Light of Passion was faded; there was nothing more for her to do.
The burden she had freed herself from only hung heavier on her shoulders now that she knew there was nothing she could do anymore. So many Cookies, still left without paradise.
"Dearest?" a voice from behind her questioned. Eternal Sugar Cookie walked through the vines, her gown loosely thrown on.
"My angel," Hollyberry Cookie said, giving her other half a quick peck.
"I'm rather cold without you by my side," Eternal Sugar Cookie commented, leaning close to Hollyberry Cookie. "Come back to bed."
"Just... give me a few minutes," she sighed, looking back towards the gate. For the first time in a while, Hollyberry Cookie heard something in her head.
'It's not too late! Never let go of your shield!'
She jumped, surprised by the sound of the Light of Passion. Did she truly still have a desire to leave? She looked at Eternal Sugar Cookie, who was staring toward the gate, her Soul Jam dimming. However, its light quickly returned when she looked toward Hollyberry Cookie.
Looking at Eternal Sugar Cookie under the moonlight, Hollyberry Cookie knew her desire.

Chapter Text
"Wildberry Cookie," a deep voice said from behind. Wildberry Cookie turned to see Dark Cacao Cookie, sitting across from him by their campfire. The rest of the Cookies slept in their tents.
"Your Majesty," Wildberry Cookie acknowledged, nodding in respect. "I hope I didn't wake you by keeping the fire going."
"Not at all," Dark Cacao Cookie assured him. "I do wish to speak to you."
Wildberry Cookie was puzzled. He knew that of all the ancient heroes, the Queen Mother had been the closest to Dark Cacao Cookie. Maybe this was related to her, but wouldn't Tarte Tatin Cookie or Pitaya Dragon Cookie make better choices for that matter?
"It pertains to Crunchy Chip Cookie," he explained. Wildberry Cookie tried to suppress whatever expression was trying to form on his face. "I've noticed your lack of interactions in the last couple days. From what I understand, you two are rather close."
What was he going to do? He couldn't lie to Dark Cacao Cookie; if he got caught in it, that would be trust broken forever. He also had to get a hold of himself. Before Pavlova Cookie, he had never even come close to admitting how he felt about Crunchy Chip Cookie to anyone. Now he was face to face with one of the most important Cookies on Earthbread, about to do that very same thing.
"I... did something impulsive," Wildberry Cookie admitted. "Perhaps you're just noticing my reluctance to confront him about it."
"Talk to him," the King replied. "Hollyberry Cookie would have told you to address it, would she not?"
She would have, without a doubt, nearly forced him to address it. Wildberry Cookie sighed, his willpower failing to prevent his face from heating up. He buried his head in his hands.
"I know it is easier said than done," Dark Cacao Cookie finished, "but I know he's certainly not upset with you, no matter what may have happened."
Obviously, Wildberry Cookie doubted that. You don't put three years of friendship on the line over your foolish longing and expect everything to turn out right in the end. Regardless, he gave the King a nod, and he retired to his tent.
The Cookies were almost to the Hollyberry Kingdom, but with no one patrolling the jungles surrounding it, it was safer to wait the night out. Wildberry Cookie had volunteered to be on watch for the night. Chocolate Bark Cookie had vetoed that idea fairly quickly, but he'd already had his shift.
For a few hours, it had just been Wildberry Cookie and his thoughts. He'd been going so fast the past few days; he needed a respite. Given the time to process for even a couple of hours would do wonders on his conscience.
Most of the first hour was spent thinking about Hollyberry Cookie. Very rarely, even in his own thoughts, would Wildberry Cookie refer to Her Majesty as his mother. He wasn't of a noble doughline; every Cookie that whispered when he passed by was well aware of that. As of the past few days, though, it had been happening more frequently. He hadn't just abandoned his duty, no, he had also abandoned his family.
Then his thoughts wandered, oddly enough, to Pavlova Cookie. They were so different, yet it seemed they shared something that they wouldn't dare speak out loud. Pavlova Cookie was a tragedy; his story was a cautionary tale. He was the Cookie that let the butterfly escape his clutches before he got to kiss her wings. Wildberry Cookie knew it was a warning of what would happen, but the fear that overwhelmed him and the doubts that crept in from his past won.
Bumbleberry Pie Cookie, the only time Wildberry Cookie had ever been honest with himself. The first of many times he would learn that the world was stuck in the close-minded past. The last time he would ever let himself fall in love for many, many years. The two of them had met in the markets; Bumbleberry Pie Cookie ran into Wildberry Cookie while trying to cut through an alleyway.
They had been practically inseparable for a few weeks, until that moment in the alley. Whether it was the Bumbleberry family or the friends from House Cranberry, something had changed in Bumbleberry Pie Cookie. For a while, this was why Wildberry Cookie refused to attend any sort of gathering. Eventually, this combined with the realization that the wealthy in the kingdom had a certain distaste for him, and he tried not to appear at all.
Then the Crème Republic happened. To be more specific, Crunchy Chip Cookie happened.
Once the sun had started to rise, Wildberry Cookie allowed his thoughts to wander to that Cookie he longed for but could never have. He wondered what beautiful shade of gold Crunchy Chip Cookie's eyes would be in the sunrise. Then the tents nearby opened, and the chatter among Cookies started, and he had no more time to ponder.
•
The streets of the Grandberry Market still appeared as they had before Beast-Yeast, but all the Cookies had disappeared. The fruits on the stands had begun to rot, the foul sweetness filling the air. Wildberry Cookie led the way, Pitaya Dragon Cookie constantly trying to overtake him but quickly getting lost.
As they turned a corner, however, they saw a lone Cookie, rummaging through a stand in the market. Wildberry Cookie had fought for survival constantly as a child, but he would never forget a face. He could never forget that face. Before he could rush the Cookies following him past, that voice called out to him.
"Wildberry Cookie!" the voice cried, clearly emotional about seeing another Cookie after what must have been weeks. Wildberry Cookie almost walked away, but Crunchy Chip Cookie was already opening his mouth to speak.
"Bumbleberry Pie Cookie," Wildberry Cookie replied, his voice betraying how tense he was. "We have business to attend to."
"Wildberry Cookie, please," Bumbleberry Pie Cookie begged. "It's been so empty, so lonely... my family has disappeared without a trace, and-"
"Just follow us," he conceded. "But if you want empathy on being left alone, don't ask me to spare any."
Crunchy Chip Cookie glanced between Wildberry Cookie and the other Cookie, his eyes narrowing.
"Who's this?" Crunchy Chip Cookie asked, though it wasn't directly to Wildberry Cookie.
"A former acquaintance of mine," Wildberry Cookie replied, Pitaya Dragon Cookie suppressing a chuckle. Normally, he would glare at the dragon, but he couldn't muster the energy.
He was drained. Everything had turned upside down and he'd only made things worse. Maybe the palace could change things, but based on how everything else was, he wasn't very hopeful.

Chapter Text
The quiet garden corner Wildberry Cookie had spent many evenings within was the only thing in the palace that was exactly how he'd left it. It was hidden fairly well; you had to squint to see it, and then you had to figure out how to get in through the bushes.
This evening, however, a key aspect was missing: the silence. He was listening to an interaction between two Cookies beyond the bushes. Of course he didn't want to be as nosy as the Queen Mother, but he was curious.
Crunchy Chip Cookie was farther away. Wildberry Cookie would guess he was closer to the little archway entrance to this section of the garden. Bumbleberry Pie Cookie was sitting at a nearby table, and due to the faint sound of pages turning every minute or two, Wildberry Cookie guessed he was reading.
"Hey!" Crunchy Chip Cookie called out, Bumbleberry Pie Cookie putting the book down. Wildberry Cookie heard footsteps approaching the table Bumbleberry Pie Cookie had been sitting at. "What did you do to Wildberry Cookie?"
"Excuse me...?" Bumbleberry Pie Cookie replied. He sounded nervous.
"You knew his name, and judging by what happened to his face..." the Captain said. Wildberry Cookie would try to ignore the fact that Crunchy Chip Cookie had been looking at his face. "...he knew you too."
"He made some bad choices with his life that confused me as a child, but a few of my friends cleared things up," Bumbleberry Pie Cookie sighed.
"You..." Crunchy Chip Cookie muttered, "you hurt him, didn't you?"
"He punched me," Bumbleberry Pie Cookie corrected. Wildberry Cookie would have interrupted there if it were anyone else, but Crunchy Chip Cookie wouldn't believe that he was violent in that way. "I tried to explain to him that Cookies were meant to-"
"Don't finish that sentence!" Crunchy Chip Cookie snapped. "Wildberry Cookie saved my life. He's one of my best friends, and if I had my Cream Wolf with me-"
Wildberry Cookie heard rustling, followed by footsteps. Bumbleberry Pie Cookie had walked away. After waiting a few moments, Wildberry Cookie exited the garden sanctuary he had, Crunchy Chip Cookie jumping.
"Did you-" Crunchy Chip Cookie was about to ask.
"Thank you," Wildberry Cookie mumbled, already feeling the warmth and nerves that being around Crunchy Chip Cookie alone tended to grant him. "I'm sure you can infer... what happened between myself and Bumbleberry Pie Cookie."
"Trust me, he won't tell anyone if he knows what's good for him!" the Captain chuckled. He glanced around the garden, looking for hidden areas. "Where did you come from...?"
"I suppose I could show you," Wildberry Cookie said. He gestured for Crunchy Chip Cookie to follow him. The Captain grabbed his hand, and he nearly melted on the spot.
The garden refuge was somehow like a brand new place with Crunchy Chip Cookie by his side. The overgrown fountain and cracked stone table all looked as if they were brand new, ready to spring to life. Wildberry Cookie gestured for Crunchy Chip Cookie to sit next to him. Their hands stayed together.
He observed Crunchy Chip Cookie as he looked around the garden. He watched the other Cookie's eyes glisten from the light in the pink sky. Faintly, he could hear an echo of the music that would be audible from the ballroom.
"When did you find this place?" the Captain asked, breaking the silence.
"I believe it was one of my first days staying at the palace, before I'd begun training," Wildberry Cookie replied. "I read your letters here, on that seat over there. I'll write some of them at this table."
"I wish I could write like you," Crunchy Chip Cookie sighed. "You just know what to say."
"I would actually say you're better with that," Wildberry Cookie argued. "I've envied your ability to... comfort me, even kingdoms apart."
"That's what friends are for," he said.
Wildberry Cookie was brought back from his trance. Friends was all they had ever been, and all they would ever be. While he was fortunate enough to have looser restrictions on his duties, Crunchy Chip Cookie had a tight schedule. Even if he hadn't, there was far too much distance between them to truly be able to make time to see each other. But he was nothing if not a fool, as had been made clear to him in the past month.
"I... apologize," Wildberry Cookie sighed, "for the past few days. I believe I've been rather... distant."
"I said it in the Dragon City, but I'll say it again," Crunchy Chip Cookie said. "If you need a Cookie to talk to, I'll be here. I care about you."
"I believe the care is mutual," he replied. For a moment, the world stood still. If the circumstances were different, if things were just right, Wildberry Cookie would have spoken his feelings into reality. Alas, there was a time and a place, of which this was neither.
"Well, I don't want to invade your secret place for too long," Crunchy Chip Cookie chuckled. "Wouldn't want anyone finding it."
Wildberry Cookie nodded, and the other Cookie exited. After he was sure Crunchy Chip Cookie was a fair distance away, he dug through his armor to find the things he kept hidden within it.
First was a picture of him and Hollyberry Cookie. He wasn't smiling, but from what he remembered, he wasn't upset in the moment. He was a bit more expressive now than he had been as a child, but he would never truly match the emotional diversity that his mother and Crunchy Chip Cookie could achieve.
Then there was the receipt for the Herring Jelly Pie he had bought Crunchy Chip Cookie on the streets of the market. Every Cookie had eyed the two of them suspiciously; he thought it was necessary to have proof of every purchase. However, it was also a reminder of the secret he shared with the Captain.
He had also ended up with a drawing of him from a young Snapdragon Cookie, given to him by Hollyberry Cookie after she'd received a letter from Tarte Tatin Cookie. It wasn't a professional work of art by any means, but when a young Cookie offers you something, you take it and act as if it means the world. Other Cookies did the same for you, after all.
Then there was the letter. He had rewritten this letter dozens of times, each of the previous drafts being burnt by candlelight. He hadn't written one since before Beast-Yeast, but it had helped him get a lot of feelings off of his chest. He opened the wax seal, unfolding the letter gently.
Dear Crunchy Chip Cookie,
I've attempted to write this letter many times before, but alas, both the right words and the true courage continue to escape me. I suppose I have you to thank for that.
I believe myself to have fallen in love with you, possibly even only a week after we met. You are truly the most captivating Cookie I have ever met. You changed my perspective on Earthbread and its cultures, as well as my thoughts and words.
I know, above all else, this is very sensitive information. I don't expect a reply; I've prepared for the rejection that comes with such a confession. I just need to tell you before the venture to Beast-Yeast changes the both of us forever.
Sincerely yours,
Wildberry Cookie
Immediately, Wildberry Cookie hated the letter. He hated feeling this way, despite how much joy it brought him to think of Crunchy Chip Cookie. He hated the words he used, the way he was so peaceful in his life before Beast-Yeast. He hated it all.
Wildberry Cookie sighed, crumpling the letter up in his hand. He looked around the garden, looking at the lanterns that hadn't been lit in weeks. It was getting dark outside, and it was time to head in for the night. After all, he would probably need to plan what was next for the Cookies that had joined him.
However, when he got to his chambers, he sat at the ornate wooden desk within. He pulled out a sheet of paper, lit a candle, opened the window to reveal the moonlight, and wrote a new draft of the letter to never be sent.
Notes:
the letter thing was based heavily on wildberry's decor interaction (which if you don't have it in game or play the game to begin with you can find it on youtube or the wiki) and also js. he's sentimental in my heart ok

Chapter 13: the plan
Summary:
the final plan for rescuing hollyberry cookie is made.
Chapter Text
On this morning, the Cookies of Wildberry Cookie's emergency council of adventurers gathered in the palace library for a meeting. Bumbleberry Pie Cookie had presumably gone to the kitchen to make himself, and only himself, a nice breakfast.
Wildberry Cookie sighed, his sleep last night having been less than optimal. It wasn't that his dreams had been bad. The opposite was true, and it kept him up trying to shake the impossible fantasy his mind was so desperate to chase from his consciousness. He wondered to himself if the mark Beast-Yeast had left on him wasn't the scars, but the fact that what was once manageable stray thoughts was now such overwhelming feelings.
Despite the fact that they were being more clear again, Wildberry Cookie and Crunchy Chip Cookie hadn't discussed anything about what had transpired on the rooftop. Maybe Crunchy Chip Cookie hadn't seen what Wildberry Cookie felt behind it, or maybe he didn't know how to reject it. Either way, everything had given him a headache, and he was fine forgetting about it.
He couldn't get Crunchy Chip Cookie out of his head. That wasn't new, though. That had been normal for some three or four years. However, with many other lives at stake, it wasn't helping Wildberry Cookie's focus.
"So, uhh..." Chocolate Bark Cookie said, "it's berry tense in here, hah!"
Dark Cacao Cookie suppressed a smile, Pitaya Dragon Cookie humming annoyedly. Chocolate Bark Cookie mumbled something similar to 'tough crowd' under his breath.
"I've been considering our next move," Wildberry Cookie began, "and I think we should get the aid of Golden Cheese Cookie. She's still in Beast-Yeast, with the Crème Republic's expedition forces. If we want to stand a chance against Eternal Sugar Cookie, we need the force of another Ancient Hero."
"I concur," Dark Cacao Cookie replied. "Golden Cheese Cookie is a very close friend of Hollyberry Cookie."
"Woah, woah," Crunchy Chip Cookie interrupted. "We're JUST getting her, right? I'm not dealing with those snakes from the Republic again!"
"I'm not fond of the Republic either," Wildberry Cookie assured him. "They wouldn't exactly be... welcoming of her relationship with Eternal Sugar Cookie either."
That was an understatement. Their alliance with the Republic was constantly in jeopardy due to White Lily Cookie, and that was without the added drama of romance. Golden Cheese Cookie may also be reluctant to accept Hollyberry Cookie's involvement with a Beast, but if the goal was for them to end said involvement, they could succeed.
The plan had been set: they would return to the Dark Cacao Kingdom for final preparations, get Golden Cheese Cookie from the outpost near the Faerie Kingdom, and save Hollyberry Cookie. They would leave for the Dark Cacao Kingdom in the afternoon.
It was strange for the Palace to be so silent. The ballroom was in pristine condition, no mess left over from the ball that would have been last night. There were no servants running around, no Princess Cookie being chased by a concerned Knight Cookie, and no Hollyberry Cookie to hold it all together.
As Wildberry Cookie straightened out his chambers, preparing to leave the Palace behind again, he heard a knock at his door. He opened the door, Chocolate Bark Cookie smiling at him.
"Mind if I help you?" Chocolate Bark Cookie asked. It wasn't an offer, it was more of a command. Wildberry Cookie hummed, allowing the other Cookie to step past. He surveyed the room before grabbing a broom in the corner and sweeping.
They mindlessly cleaned for a few minutes. Wildberry Cookie was usually wary of strangers, but he knew the Cookie before him was a very close ally to Tarte Tatin Cookie.
"So, what's with you and the wolf tamer?" he brought up, the smirk on his face evident in his voice.
Wildberry Cookie noticed, before giving a glare to the other Cookie, the old term. Chocolate Bark Cookie had been in the Cacao Kingdom for quite some time based on that alone, and it had been many years ago.
"Crunchy Chip Cookie and I are friends," Wildberry Cookie said.
"Tarte Tatin Cookie was right about ya," he chuckled. "No-nonsense."
"I believe we should be preparing for our departure," Wildberry Cookie replied.
Chocolate Bark Cookie sighed, but he didn't look ready to give up. He left Wildberry Cookie alone once again.
When Wildberry Cookie had finished everything else, he took the sealed letter he'd written the previous night and put it right where the last one had been, by his heart. Were he to crumble in battle, the letter would be there to say the things he never thought he could.
He shut his eyes as the balloon back to the Dark Cacao Kingdom ascended, knowing the journey would be over soon enough. The final struggle for Hollyberry Cookie, however, was still barely beginning.

Chapter Text
"Hm... am I an Ancient Hero?" Raspberry Cookie asked, the 'Clotted Cream Cookie' card plastered on her forehead.
While things were getting intense, Crunchy Chip Cookie had suggested Raspberry Cookie, Caramel Arrow Cookie, Wildberry Cookie, and himself play a game where they'd guess what Cookie they were. Wildberry Cookie would have normally said no, but it was an offer to do something fun with Crunchy Chip Cookie before perhaps the most intense days of his life.
"You tried to be," Crunchy Chip Cookie mumbled, earning an elbow from Caramel Arrow Cookie. "No, you are not an Ancient Hero. Am I a Cacao Warrior?"
Wildberry Cookie chuckled, the slanted 'Golden Cheese Cookie' card on his forehead. He shook his head, Caramel Arrow Cookie confirming that Golden Cheese Cookie was, in fact, not a Cacao Warrior.
"Am I, in the grand moral scheme of Earthbread, good?" Caramel Arrow Cookie questioned. The 'Tiger Lily Cookie' card on her forehead would say so.
"Yes," Wildberry Cookie gave her, careful not to elaborate. The game was supposed to be difficult, after all. "Do I know anyone in this room?"
"Absolutely," Raspberry Cookie said with a giggle. "Hm... am I in a position of power?"
The group of Cookies gave a collective nod. It was odd how they had come to some universal agreement to ignore what would happen to the life they knew in the coming days. They were returning to a land with so much trauma and suffering and doubt and fear attached to it, letting the past surface before it was even under control.
"Hm... am I an Ancient Hero?" Crunchy Chip Cookie asked, Caramel Arrow Cookie muttering a 'yes' and scoffing.
They were in a small guest chamber, occasionally peering out at the Licorice Sea and the boat they would be using to cross it.
"Am I Hollyberrian?" Caramel Arrow Cookie prompted, earning a groan from Raspberry Cookie. "I'll take that as a yes."
"Hm..." Wildberry Cookie was in thought, staring out towards the shore. He swore he could see the jagged peaks along the coast of Beast-Yeast, though he knew it was his mind playing tricks on him. "Hm... was I a member of the Republic Delegation?"
Crunchy Chip Cookie nearly threw the rice cake he'd been munching on, instead opting to take a very pointedly angry bite from it. Caramel Arrow Cookie gave a nod, giggling at the sight before her. It was so odd to see these Cookies, who Wildberry Cookie was connected with in one way or another, having all of this joy despite what had happened in the recent past.
"Am I a monarch?" Raspberry Cookie articulated, careful with the question. Wildberry Cookie shook his head, and she pumped her fist in the air.
"Has anyone in this room met me?" Crunchy Chip Cookie asked, his mouth still half-full. Wildberry Cookie gave a smile, Raspberry Cookie popping the 'p' sound in 'nope.'
"Am I in this room?" Caramel Arrow Cookie asked, Crunchy Chip Cookie standing up as if he was about to walk out. Raspberry Cookie gave her a nod. "Hey, quitters never win, Captain."
Based on what Wildberry Cookie knew, he was probably either Financier Cookie or Crunchy Chip Cookie. The former probably wasn't even in the deck, however, so he decided to ask a targeted question.
"Have I, at least once, had a nightmare involving enjoying a jelly followed by rigorous training while sleeping in a bed that was, and I quote, 'too soft?'" he asked, trying to deadpan. He knew the smile on his face was definitely showing through, but maybe he could enjoy something for a bit before the voyage.
Caramel Arrow Cookie and Raspberry Cookie looked puzzled, but Crunchy Chip Cookie was clearly somewhere between embarrassed, angry, and playful.
"Yes, you have..." Crunchy Chip Cookie grumbled, though it was unclear if that was from anger or suppressing a grin. Caramel Arrow Cookie gestured wildly.
"Pause!" she yelled. "I need to hear that entire story."
"In my defense," Crunchy Chip Cookie explained, "it was a very troubling time. There was the mudflats, and I will spare your mind from the truth of what those mudflats were made of."
"This happened prior to our visit to Choco Mud Town," Wildberry Cookie interjected, Crunchy Chip Cookie shushing him.
"That's not the point!" he added, stumbling over his words a bit. "In the dream, it was very disturbing, and that is all that matters."
Wildberry Cookie chuckled, not paying much mind to the wild cocktail of emotions he had seeing Crunchy Chip Cookie like this. Most of what he'd seen from the Captain had been his attempt at diplomacy, and even though it was lacking at times, it was still so much better to catch the glimpses of how he truly expressed himself.
The discussion, somehow, went from there to boba tea to Pure Vanilla Cookie to all sorts of random topics. Through it all, Wildberry Cookie spoke very little, only giving basic responses when prompted. He was captivated by every single aspect of Crunchy Chip Cookie. All of the inflections in his voice as he spoke were like music. The sparkles in his eyes when he was excited were more brilliant than the night sky on the clearest of nights.
However, all good things must come to an end. The sun was setting, and a royal advisor had come to escort the five Cookies in the room toward the docks. The snow twinkled under the purple sky. Wildberry Cookie watched the land get farther and farther away as their ship slowly drifted away from the dock.

Despite the fact Wildberry Cookie hadn't requested a celebration, Hollyberry Cookie would use any excuse she could find to invite Cookies to the palace for a ball. The invitation may have said it was specifically for Wildberry Cookie, but she figured he was hiding in the garden by now.
As she greeted other Cookies around the room, she couldn't help but worry for the young Cookie. Was he going to be alright? She was saving a gift for him for tomorrow, but perhaps now was when he needed it most.
She grabbed the gift box from where she'd left it in the corner of the ballroom, and she quietly left. The halls of the palace were filled with portraits and paintings, a few of which included a younger Wildberry Cookie. He didn't smile; it wasn't a lack of happiness, but a lack of understanding why it was a necessity.
The door to the garden that Wildberry Cookie normally used was barely noticeable. Hollyberry Cookie herself had walked past it many times without even knowing it was there. She turned the knob and stepped out, the evening air and chirping of crickets soothing her.
Wildberry Cookie had found a corner in the garden and taken it upon himself to restore it a few years ago, and it had since become where he went to escape the noise and parties that were so frequent in the Hollyberry Palace. The Queen stepped through the bushes, Wildberry Cookie barely glancing up as she entered.
"You won't even enjoy a ball this once?" she asked, Wildberry Cookie humming in response. Hollyberry Cookie took a seat next to him on a stone bench. "I can't believe you're taller than me..."
The quiet between them two was usually comfortable. It wasn't silence, it was just peace. It was communicating beyond words. Wildberry Cookie sighed.
"I have a gift for you," Hollyberry Cookie said, handing the box to Wildberry Cookie. He gently pushed it back towards her, shaking his head.
"I can't take anything more from you, your Majesty," he mumbled. "Your training over the years has put me in a debt I shall never come close to repaying."
"Wildberry Cookie," she sighed, "you're a part of my family."
He went silent. Hollyberry Cookie tried to hand him the box again, and this time, he took it. He opened it cautiously, looking at the gift like he expected a monster to jump out. What he found, though, was a gauntlet.
"Now, don't take this as me saying you can't hold a good fight on your own," Hollyberry Cookie explained. "I just want other Cookies to know that, and I want you to know more than anything how proud I am of you. There will be Cookies in this world who doubt you, whether due to your upbringing or your Hollyberrian origin. I want you to know that, no matter whether or not we share a doughline, the Light of Passion will guide you as it guides me."
Wildberry Cookie, though he was technically looking down at her, was gazing at her as if she was still an entire head taller than him. She gave him a smile, gesturing for him to put the gauntlet on. He gently touched it at first, as if it would shatter with too much pressure, before sliding it on.
"Promise me, Wildberry Cookie," Hollyberry Cookie said, putting her hand on his shoulder. "If the Light of Passion ever goes out, you will keep the fire of Passion in your heart for eternity."
"I promise, your Majesty," Wildberry Cookie replied, though he was still somewhat stunned. "I ask, in return, that you protect the Cookies of this kingdom as you did myself. Never let go of your shield."
•
Never let go of your shield.
Hollyberry Cookie found herself lying under a tree, Eternal Sugar Cookie playing the lyre as she had been dozing off. What was she doing here? Dark Enchantress Cookie was planning to take over the world, and yet she was under a tree with the most beautiful Cookie on Earthbread, hidden from it all. Eternal Sugar Cookie, however, looked troubled as well. The Light of Sloth was dim, almost as dim as the Light of Passion on Hollyberry Cookie's shield.
The notes she plucked on the lyre sounded more desperate with each moment, and Hollyberry Cookie noticed. She stood up, walking over to Eternal Sugar Cookie. The other Cookie stopped playing the lyre, but instead of ending it on a chord as she normally would, she let the song end on a dissonant note.
"Eternal Sugar Cookie, dear," Hollyberry Cookie said, the other Cookie looking up at her. "What troubles you?"
"Nothing troubles me in our paradise," Eternal Sugar Cookie replied. The smile she had, however, didn't meet her eyes.
"Perhaps doubt is getting to us both," Hollyberry Cookie sighed, sitting next to her other half.
Did Wildberry Cookie, wherever he was, still have Passion in his heart? If there were any Cookie she trusted to be alright, it was Wildberry Cookie. Eternal Sugar Cookie rested her head on Hollyberry Cookie's shoulder, sighing. Her happiness seemed to be returning as she closed her eyes.
"Nothing such as doubt and troubles will find us here," Eternal Sugar Cookie giggled. "How silly of me to consider otherwise."
Hollyberry Cookie hummed in agreement, but she was still lost in her thoughts. She had wanted, perhaps deep in her heart, for Wildberry Cookie to escape. It wasn't her thinking that he would return to the garden someday anymore. It was her hoping that he would stay far away, allowing paradise to be just her and Eternal Sugar Cookie.
The sweet scent of mulled juice was always in the air, and Hollyberry Cookie needed to forget. She cupped her hands, taking mulled juice from the pond around her and sipping it. It already began clouding her thoughts, helping her escape what remained of the outside world in her mind.
It was just her and Eternal Sugar Cookie. Her and paradise. But she had made a promise, and she had broken it. A broken promise was something that would forever weigh on her heart and her conscience, no matter how much she dreamed or drank or loved.

Chapter Text
The Licorice Sea was still, after all this time, so peaceful to Wildberry Cookie. Even as the abyss itself rocked the boat back and forth, he stood looking out towards the emptiness. The stars reflected on the surface, and Wildberry Cookie could no longer tell where the sky ended and the sea began. Just as he had before, he woke up to the waves throwing him around.
The stairs leading down to his cabin creaked, and he turned to see what caused the noise. Crunchy Chip Cookie walked up the stairs, jumping at the sight of the other Cookie once he glanced up.
"You really know how to give a Cookie a scare," Crunchy Chip Cookie chuckled. He walked up next to Wildberry Cookie.
That comfortable silence, the one that had always filled space between them, covered them like a blanket. They stood together, the sky and stars looking back at them. Wildberry Cookie took a glance at the Cookie next to him, the adoration that he knew far too well already coming out.
"You know," Crunchy Chip Cookie said, barely above a whisper, "I didn't mind what you did, back in the Dragon's Valley."
He wasn't prepared for this. Wildberry Cookie knew he wasn't prepared for this. Maybe he was talking about buying the pie, or some other thing slipping his mind. But there was still a part of him that wanted it to be what he'd done on the rooftop, a part that wanted to hope there was more to this story.
After weighing the odds and double checking the chances, Wildberry Cookie took a glance down at the other Cookie. Those golden eyes were just staring back at him, a smile on the other Cookie's face. Maybe this was all a dream, but perhaps some dreams are meant to be given into.
For a moment, he swore Crunchy Chip Cookie glanced at his lips, and that completely broke whatever composure he thought he had left. He was keeping it together with pure willpower.
Crunchy Chip Cookie was definitely looking at his lips. It was clear to Wildberry Cookie that this was going to happen, and there wasn't a way to prevent it. It wasn't like he wanted to stop it, either.
"I suppose you're alright with this?" Wildberry Cookie whispered, waiting for approval. Crunchy Chip Cookie nodded, and he leaned closer.
Wildberry Cookie closed his eyes. If this was a dream, the best way to wake up would be that way. He felt the rough hands of Crunchy Chip Cookie grab his face and pull him closer.
The spire in the Crème Republic had intrigued Wildberry Cookie. He knew he was afraid of heights, but he wanted to climb anyway and see the view. He knew that putting friendship on the line and doing this when they lived kingdoms apart was reckless, but he kissed Crunchy Chip Cookie anyway and just soaked it all in.
He wasn't sure if it had been months or less than a second, and in all honesty, he didn't care. This was the oasis in his desert; this was the Garden in his Beast-Yeast. But all good things must come to an end. After all, breathing was necessary to life. He pulled away from Crunchy Chip Cookie, though it was how one would feel after picking a flower they had grown all summer.
For a while, Wildberry Cookie just stared. He feared that, perhaps, he had been in a jar of jam this whole time. Eternal Sugar Cookie could be watching him dream, tempting him with the thing she must have known he wanted most. Pavlova Cookie could be there next to her, giggling and going on one of his tangents about the beauty of love.
"You're a very well-regarded Cookie, Captain," Wildberry Cookie sighed. "You have a reputation on the line."
"Most of the watchers don't even know that Cookies live in the mountains," Crunchy Chip Cookie said. "You're Hollyberry Cookie's personal bodyguard. Don't sell yourself short."
"We live kingdoms apart," he replied. "What would His Majesty think?"
"Wildberry Cookie," the Captain chuckled. Wildberry Cookie felt both of his hands being grasped by the other Cookie. "We've written letters for... doesn't matter. As far as Cookies go, you're my best friend. Besides, His Majesty isn't in the greatest position to judge."
Wildberry Cookie took a deep breath. Why was it that he was trying so hard to take this away from himself? He wanted to do this, he had wanted it for years, yet it seemed so hard to just say yes.
"Let's sleep on it," Crunchy Chip Cookie concluded. "Come on, you'll get sick if you stay out here."
Wildberry Cookie only found himself nodding, still lacking any proper words. His eyelids were already getting heavy again, and the sea had calmed. Crunchy Chip Cookie took his place on the opposite side of the cabin, leaving Wildberry Cookie alone with his thoughts again.
He was replaying everything from the last five minutes. It was fuzzy, surreal even, but it had definitely happened. He had felt the wind on his face, and seen the stars in the sky.
He didn't know if it being real made it more or less scary.
Beast-Yeast was a land full of turmoil. Unrest was sown deeply in the soil, and the creatures were ten times stronger than those of Crispia. Maybe, deep down, he was afraid of the fact he could lose what he had only just gotten in an unfamiliar land.
He could sense, though, that the Captain was uncertain too. They both had a commitment to their kingdoms, one that had already made keeping up with each other near impossible. Earthbread had tried its hardest to keep them apart.
Besides, he didn't know how Crunchy Chip Cookie felt about him. It was difficult to tell, even with actions some would consider obvious. He wanted to talk with the other Cookie first. The letter that he never intended on delivering may finally see the light of day.
The darkness of the cabin had consumed Wildberry Cookie whole, but he needed sleep. Sleep would clear his thoughts, and that was something he needed. Maybe Crunchy Chip Cookie would forget it all in the morning.
Notes:
WOOOOOOOOOO im so happy. theyre actually gonna talk after this instead of ignoring it for another 10k words i need them happy 🙏🙏

Chapter Text
Who was moving around?
Wildberry Cookie woke up to a feeling of relative stillness, accompanied by the sounds of a Cookie walking around the cabin. He sat up, rubbing his eyes. He reached for the plates of his armor he'd taken off and began to fasten them back on.
"Sleep well?" Crunchy Chip Cookie asked, walking towards him.
In truth, it was some of the worst sleep he'd ever had. He didn't know what happened last night. Had he just had a crazy dream? Was Crunchy Chip Cookie a few glasses of juice deep? Or, scariest of all, did it all happen exactly how he remembered it?
"I'll take that as a no," the Captain sighed, putting his final coat on. "We'll talk later, once there's less to think about."
Crunchy Chip Cookie definitely remembered something happening. That crushed Wildberry Cookie's hopes of just never confronting his feelings ever fairly quickly. He still wouldn't look Crunchy Chip Cookie in the eyes.
"We may not get such a chance," Wildberry Cookie replied. "After all, Beast-Yeast is a land of many mysteries."
Crunchy Chip Cookie hummed in response, but Wildberry Cookie couldn't tell whether it was agreement, annoyance, disappointment, or anger. Maybe it was all four of them. He finally stood up, walking towards the door of the cabin. Once the air hit him, that familiar sense of dread settled, combined with his other worries.
Just as he stepped off of the boat, he saw the Cookies he had traveled with in something of a circle. They were probably discussing what the next steps would be. As Wildberry Cookie walked toward them, however, he bumped into Crunchy Chip Cookie. For a moment, they made eye contact.
Whatever terrible, exhilarating feeling Wildberry Cookie had felt with Crunchy Chip Cookie before last night had been replaced with one ten times worse.
Wildberry Cookie didn't want to know what was going on with his face right now. Dark Cacao Cookie glanced between him and Crunchy Chip Cookie. For a moment, something different flashed in his eyes. Wildberry Cookie wasn't good with emotions, but he'd wager plenty of things on the fact that he saw recognition. After a painfully long moment of silence, Dark Cacao Cookie cleared his throat, and Wildberry Cookie held back a very relieved sigh.
"From what I recall in Pure Vanilla Cookie's letter," the King began, "the Crème Republic's expedition outpost should be rather close, only a few minutes northwest."
"And who, exactly, is doing the talking?" Raspberry Cookie asked, Pitaya Dragon Cookie muttering something under their breath.
"I believe the delegates will be able to access the outpost for us the easiest," Dark Cacao Cookie said, though the end of it was more of a sigh. "However, when it comes to Golden Cheese Cookie, I will be doing the talking."
By his side, Wildberry Cookie could feel Crunchy Chip Cookie about to protest, but he looked down in defeat. The Crème Republic was an amazing place itself, but the Cookies within it were certainly judgmental.
"We'll be alright," he whispered, Crunchy Chip Cookie looking up. Wildberry Cookie cleared his throat, addressing Dark Cacao Cookie. "No time to waste, then."
Dark Cacao Cookie led the way, Wildberry Cookie and Crunchy Chip Cookie just behind him. Every other Cookie was somewhere close behind, with Pitaya Dragon Cookie the farthest in the back. The Yeast Spores bounced around the woods. The path the Cookies were following was fairly maintained.
Cookie voices were audible slightly to the left, and Wildberry Cookie stepped ahead of Dark Cacao Cookie to follow the sound. He came upon a clearing with temporary walls set up around some sort of camp. The entrance was protected by Cookies in uniforms he unfortunately recognized. Crunchy Chip Cookie had caught up to him, and the familiarity of the situation was not lost on either of them.
"State your business," the Custard Guard said. Crunchy Chip Cookie was about to start shouting.
"I'd like to report on the status of the Hollyberry Kingdom to His Excellency," Wildberry Cookie replied. "Tell him the delegates are here."
"Don't call us that," Crunchy Chip Cookie groaned, speaking more to Wildberry Cookie. The Custard Guard whispered something to his colleague, and the other Cookie ran off.
Clotted Cream Cookie came running towards the gates of the outpost almost immediately, the anxiety obvious on his face. He told the guards quickly to let the two Cookies pass.
"Wildberry Cookie," Clotted Cream Cookie said, "we've been waiting to hear of Hollyberry Cookie's wellbeing."
"Unfortunately, she is still in the domain of the Beast Cookie who shares her Soul Jam," Wildberry Cookie replied, Crunchy Chip Cookie glancing up at him with concern. "Myself and a few others were able to escape and make contact with the Dark Cacao Kingdom."
"I am glad to know you are safe," the Consul told him. "Is it just you two?"
"We have King Dark Cacao Cookie, his First Watcher, Pitaya Dragon Cookie, and a few friends of the Queen Mother alongside us as well," Wildberry Cookie explained. Clotted Cream Cookie glanced around the outpost's tents.
"If a few Cookies share, we should have room for you all to rest until we can discuss further tomorrow," the Consul explained. "For now, please rest. The Crème Republic is indebted to you and the Ancient Heroes, after all."
It went without discussion that Crunchy Chip Cookie and Wildberry Cookie would share a tent. After all, they shared a room in Mansion Madeleine, even when they disliked each other. The night was winding down; dinner had been served, tents were starting to be closed, and the sun had set a few hours ago.
"I suppose we should have that discussion you were speaking of earlier," Wildberry Cookie sighed, resting on the floor of the tent. Crunchy Chip Cookie was next to him.
Then there was silence. Not the usual kind that they could both enjoy, but the tense kind. Maybe this had all been a mistake. Maybe Crunchy Chip Cookie had just taken pity on him. Pavlova Cookie had been right, hadn't he? But even then, there was one more thing Wildberry Cookie had to try.
He reached for the letter he kept close to his heart. Crunchy Chip Cookie looked puzzled, but this was all he had. He handed the letter to the Captain, closing his eyes and taking a deep breath. The other Cookie opened the envelope quickly, unfolding the letter. He didn't know what speed the Captain would read at. He didn't want to reread his own words; they were terrifying enough.
Instead, he studied Crunchy Chip Cookie's face. There were things he hadn't noticed before: specks of flour were in his dough, a mark of Beast-Yeast. It seemed every Cookie who stepped foot on this continent would have a scar to remind them of it forever. The flour was in patches, each of them a cluster of stars in what was the grandest galaxy Wildberry Cookie had ever seen.
Crunchy Chip Cookie folded the letter and put it back in the envelope. He looked back up at Wildberry Cookie, the emotions in his eyes muddled together. There was happiness, fear, sadness, even a bit of anger. Not towards Wildberry Cookie, but towards all of the ordeal.
"That's what the Cookie knew, isn't it...?" Crunchy Chip Cookie asked. Wildberry Cookie nodded. "Why didn't you..."
"Even having met you," Wildberry Cookie sighed, "I don't usually see Cacao Warriors as the most welcoming crowd, especially to Hollyberrians."
"There's more to it!" the Captain yelled, though it was filled with worry. "You're not telling me something."
"The Cookie..." Wildberry Cookie said, "he had told me about how things wouldn't work out, how it was foolish and hopeless."
"Oh, when that little-" Crunchy Chip Cookie cut himself off, taking a deep breath. "I'm just so glad you're okay, after all of that."
"I really do love you, Crunchy Chip Cookie," Wildberry Cookie whispered. "Even if it is foolish and hopeless."
The Captain just stared at him. He felt as if the entire world had burned too hot, yet he was still numb to it all. But then, after only a few seconds, Crunchy Chip Cookie smiled. It was the same stupid smile he'd always had. Wildberry Cookie remembered it most distinctly when they had made the bet on who would like the other Cookie's kingdom more. It had felt like such a complicated affair at the time, but compared to where they were now, he would give a lot to be back in that moment.
"I love you too," Crunchy Chip Cookie laughed. "I had thought it was obvious by now, actually. Can I kiss you again?"
Wildberry Cookie nodded. The Pavlova Cookie in the back of his mind was fading out, the tiny voice getting quieter and quieter. He cupped the Captain's face with hand his gauntlet would normally be on. Any dream that the jar of jam would have granted him would never be as good as the real thing. All of his senses were overwhelmed with the adoration that had built up over all these years, everything drowned out with the existence of Crunchy Chip Cookie.
This was paradise.
