“I’m sorry we fought. I’m sorry, I’m so sorry, honey, baby, can I call you that?” Clark whispered before putting a series of kisses on her neck.
“If it humors you,” Lois answered, barely holding laughter.
“What, we’re together now, you’re my sweetheart.”
It was true. She really made it official with a guy who called her ‘sweetheart’. If someone were to tell her that five years ago…
“Okay, if you’re so sorry, what are you sorry about, exactly?”
“You’re putting me under fire again?”
If he imagined a relationship with her any other way, then he was mistaken. Of course she demanded he apologise by pointing at what he did wrong, and of course they were having this conversation despite having sex ten minutes ago.
“I just wanna know that you know where you did a bad job.”
“So I got mad at you, when all you did was ask me reasonable questions after I agreed for you to do that.”
“Is that all?”
“And I should know how an on the record interview works.” Did that satisfy her or should she push him more? She pondered over it, but before she decided, he spoke again. “Also I do that, you were right - when I get mad, I just leave the room. I do this on purpose, I’m afraid to get angry, at anyone, but especially at people I love. I can very easily hurt someone, so that… so that makes me react this way.”
“I suspected that’s the case.”
“Are we fine now? Do you accept my apology?”
He looked in her eyes with a serious expression that wasn’t there a moment ago. No puppy eyes, he was genuine.
“Yes. So, are we doing another interview? The one you publicly said you’re going to give me?”
He let in a small laugh that she found very attractive on his stupidly handsome face.
“I will. When we’re not naked in bed.”
“It might take a while,” Lois said as she moved her body to lie her head on his huge chest and listen to his heartbeat. She couldn’t get enough of it after she almost lost him.
“I’m all for it.” She barely had to look up to know he had a wicked smile on his face.
“You’re very horny for someone who won’t ever say ‘fuck’.”
“You’re noticing it now? Like we didn’t have sex on the first date? And a thousand times since then? Also, from what you said repeatedly, you’re ‘never tired of my…’”
“Whoa, where did I complain? I love that you can keep up with me.”
“That’s the only thing you love about me?” He was trying to trick her into saying ‘I love you again’. Joke on him, she didn’t need to be tricked.
“No, I love you all. You’re so caring, sweet, and kind. I don’t know why you chose me, but…”
She was playing, but he got offended.
“Don’t even say that, don’t talk like that. I love you so much. I love you more than anything. You’re the most amazing, courageous, passionate person I know. How would you feel if I said something like that?”
“That you’re lying. It's obvious that everybody wants you. I’m no Superman.” She didn’t say that with full seriousness, she didn’t have low self-esteem, she just wasn’t the most powerful person on the planet Earth, it was plain to see it was close to impossible to be in his league.
“I’m no Lois Lane.” He was adamant. “I can be Superman, but I can’t do half the things you can. You’re a way better journalist than me. Not even talking about that, I would literally die in a pocket universe if it wasn’t for your spectacular skills in figuring stuff out. If you didn’t organize a search party, I wouldn't be here.”
“Anyone would do that in my place.”
“That’s a lie.” It was.
“Anyone who was in love with you and crazy enough.” She was breaking her lifetime record of love confessions made within twenty four hours.
“So, you, and I’m extremely lucky to have you.” Clark sighed. “You’re so sweet.”
Lois chuckled.
“Sweet? I think that’s the last adjective people think of, when they think of me.”
“They know nothing,” Clark said solemnly, unbothered by her reaction.
He combed her hair with his fingers. She moved up to kiss him and make out for a bit. It was way easier lying on top of him than standing up, when he had to bend down or pull her up. Though, being pulled up had its benefits…
Lois spread her legs around his torso to embrace him like she did when he was carrying her around. She put her hands around his face to hold him whole, to feel more of him, enjoy that he was still alive.
She still wasn’t sure if she wasn’t going to disappoint him, but she would have to get into unfathomable levels of denial to keep him at arm's length any longer. Purely metaphorically, that is, because she couldn’t keep her hands off of him.
“I get you’re quite devoted then,” she teased him.
“You’re so observant.” He gave her a peck on the lips.
“I should’ve noticed when you wrote my name in the sky.”
“You got a picture of it framed and still said we’re casual.”
“Shut up!.” Lois felt her cheeks blushing. “That was too insightful.” She wanted to deflect, to make him feel embarrassed in revenge. “You know what, tell me about this secret harem of yours.”
“It's non-existent.”
“Are you sure? I've seen some comments on the internet written by nice ladies who wanted to know where they can sign up. I could've written a comment like that if I had no shame.”
“So you want to be my wife and bear my children?”
“I didn't say that.”
“Yes, you did.” Clark was winning this skirmish and she couldn't let it stand.
“The question is if you want that. From things I know how to do, only giving blowjobs can be considered a wifely skill.”
“...That's supposed to make me less interested?” Lois was still hovering over him after they kissed, which meant she had a first row view at his smirk. She almost asked him if that means he is in fact interested and if he has just proposed to her, but she was scared he was going to confirm, so she bit her tongue.
“Anyway… Are we going to tell people at the Planet that we're dating? After they just saw you take me to a remote location as your good pal Superman?”
“For a professional interview.”
“If you want to play dumb about it.”
“It’ll have to do. I don’t want to hide any longer.”
“How much ‘not hiding’ in the office do you have in mind? You still have to keep your hands to yourself.”
“I’ll be… civil.”
“Civil?”
“That’s not good enough for you, honey?” She giggled out loud, but it had no impact on how much she wanted to kiss him right now.
“It will have to do, sweetheart.”
They lips met again and it was clear for both of them they were done with conversation for tonight. His every touch reassured her of this new reality that they put back together, one in which against all odds they were a couple. And for once in her life, there was nothing she wanted to question about it.
