Work Text:

The sun shone down on Luffy and Chopper as they stood outside Law’s house. It was early, seven am to be exact. They were both supposed to be getting ready for school.

Law had just graduated from med school and was supposed to be returning today. Chopper had showed up to question Law about what he learned at school and Luffy just decided to tag along, not wanting to go to school. They stood outside the house, it was identical to all the other ones in their neighborhood. They stood there in silence for a couple more seconds before Luffy decided to make his move.

“Traffy, are you in there?” He screamed while knocking on the door.

“Luffy!” Chopper whisper screamed. “Do you know what time it is? We don’t want anyone to wake up and have them get mad at us.”

Luffy spoke at a better volume considering the time. “I don’t think Mr. Corazon would get mad at us. He seems pretty nice, going off of what I’ve heard from Traffy.”

“I know but what if Mr. Corazon isn’t the only person there.” Chopper countered. Truth be told, Chopper didn’t know anything about the residents of this house. The only family Law had ever spoke of was his adopted father, Mr. Corazon, though some nights it sounded like there was a house party going on, only for Chopper to ask around at school the next day and find that no one had been invited.

Luffy was about to respond when he heard a familiar voice coming from behind them.

“What are you two doing?” Law asked as he walked up the walkway towards them.

Luffy and Chopper both whipped their heads around in surprise before screaming “Traffy!” Chopper ran down the steps in front of the house to give Law a hug while Luffy stretched his arms out to grab Law's shoulders and rocketed himself straight into Law’s chest. Law stumbled back a little before pushing Luffy off of him. He stared down at the two devil fruit users in front of him before they started to ramble.

“We’ve missed you so much Traffy,” Chopper started.

“Traffy, while you were gone there was no one around to annoy Jaggy with me. I think we need to make up for lost time and–”

Law put a hand over Luffy's mouth to quiet him. The animals in front of him looked confused. “Why in the world are you two in front of my house at seven in the fucking morning?” Law looked concerned even though his voice sounded upset.

“Well I just wanted to hear about what you had learned at school.” Chopper replied quietly.

Luffy pushed Law’s hand away from his mouth and responded, “I came to welcome you home and hear about your time at school.”

Law looked at them both, still with a concerned look on his face before responding, “You shouldn’t be here so early, Cora’s not home right now and I highly doubt anyone else would appreciate being woken up right now.”

“Anyone else,” Chopper echoed. “Does that mean that there are other people living here except for you and Mr. Corazon?”

Shit. Law didn’t want to let anyone know that but he had just slipped up. He had always thought his uncle was a sketchy man and Cora obviously did too. Considering how many extra shifts he had been picking up at the station lately. A lot of the times when Law would try to call Cora it would go to voicemail. He would then receive a text a little while later reading, Sorry kid, can’t call right now. I’ll try to find some time when I get home. Study hard!

“Stay quiet and I’ll buy you both meat and cotton candy,” Law whispered as he grabbed both their hands and dragged them to the side of the house. Law let go of their hands to open the side gate before motioning for them to follow him into the backyard. Luffy and Chopper both stayed completely quiet the whole time. They made their way to some steps at the back of the house leading to a door. Law unlocked it and opened it for them to come inside.

Law motioned for them to sit down at the table on the left side of the room. There was a small kitchen area around the table and some stairs at the back left corner of the room. On the right side there were bunk beds and what seemed to be a door to the backroom in the corner. While a small TV and couch was set up next to the bunk beds.

They all sat down at the table before Luffy whispered, “Can we talk now?” Law glared at him and that was enough of an answer. The younger men stared at Law as he brought out his phone to text someone.

I'm home. I’m downstairs in the basement with guests. If you don’t bother us, we won't bother you. Law texted Doflamingo before setting his phone down on the table and staring at the two animals in front of him. “You can speak now. But at a normal volume.” He added the last part quickly before Luffy started yelling.

“Why did we have to be quiet,” Luffy asked.

“I don’t want you to anger the others in this house, they can be… difficult.” Law responded.

“Who else lives here,” Chopper questioned.

“My uncle and his so-called family, though I’d say it's more of a gang.”

“A gang of what?” Luffy asked.

“Crazy people,” Law answered bluntly.

Luffy looked satisfied with that answer but Chopper was apparently still curious, “Why do you think they're crazy? Have they done something?”

“How old are you two right now,” Law asked

“17,” Luffy responded.

“14,” Chopper added.

“Okay, I think you're old enough to hear about this.” Law said cautiously. “I don’t have any proof of their misdeeds but me and Cora have been suspecting that they have been illegally manufacturing weapons and selling drugs. When I was younger they were never home, and when Cora started to question his older brother about where he was he told Cora that he shouldn’t be involved in this business and that he was better off staying home and taking care of me.” Law took a breath before he continued, “That was around the time Cora got his job as a police officer and I’m sure my uncle still doesn’t know that he has it. Anyways I’m pretty sure Cora is close to catching them and hopefully it happens soon because this basement is really cramped.” Law said as he lazily stretched his arms.

Luffy and Chopper just stared at him, confusion written all over their faces on why they were being told this.

Law continued, “Oh and I’m telling you this because, even if I'm sure they are not manufacturing the weapons here, the people are still dangerous. All five of the people living upstairs have eaten devil fruits and I’m certain they have another house outside of town with even more dangerous individuals. So with all that said, I ask you two to please not bang on this house at any time.” Even if Law wouldn’t say it, he thought of Luffy and his friends as little siblings and would hate to see something bad happen to them. Especially at the hands of someone he knew so well.

Luffy and Chopper both nodded before Chopper decided to break the silence, “so can you tell us about medical school?” He said excitedly.

Law looked stunned, “Wait, after all that, are you guys not scared to be here?”

“Nope,” Luffy responded. “And earlier you promised meat and cotton candy if we were quiet, and I’d say we were pretty quiet. Right Chopper?” Chopper nodded eagerly.

Law laughed, of course Luffy wouldn't care. Though Law suspected the small doctor was focused more on hearing Law’s tales from school than anything else. Chopper would step into a haunted mansion if it meant earning just the slightest more medical knowledge, Law thought. “Okay, okay, I will keep my promise about the food, we can go around lunch time. But first let me enlighten you on the wonders of medical school.”

Chopper and Luffy both sat up in their seats quickly, staring at Law excitedly.
