The corners of Wednesday’s lips turned up—just a little. The widest smile she’d ever given anything. The sweetest success she’d ever tasted. The Hyde was hers. Everyone who said she couldn’t do it was wrong. Everyone who said her emotions would cloud her judgment was wrong. Her hatred hadn’t blinded her. It had forged her into a weapon. It had made her stronger.
Tyler knelt on the floor before her, panting and sweaty and just as repulsive as always, but he smiled up at her and for a second, he looked like the boy she used to know. Before she met the monster.
“You can fix me,” Tyler gasped. There was hope in his eyes. The tiniest of lights. “You can make me good again.”
For a minute, all the possibilities whorled through Wednesday’s mind, a hundred futures stretching out before her. A hundred ways to take advantage of being the Hyde’s Master. A hundred ways to make Tyler pay for what he’d done. But a beautiful, scarred face flashed across her mind.
“I can be whatever you want me to be.”
Wednesday’s lip curled back. Disgust. One of the few emotions she was ever willing to show on her face. One of the few that wasn't embarrassing and warm and colorful—all pink and blue and blonde.
“Please, Wednesday. I can be whatever you want.”
“No.” Wednesday held her chin high in the air and looked down at him over her nose. “You can’t be Enid.”
Enid, who Tyler had tried to kill. Enid, who Tyler had scarred inside and out. Enid, who Tyler had threatened to kill again.
“My first and last command to you is to hold still—” Wednesday delivered the order as cold as the blade she drew, “—and don’t scream. I’ll already enjoy this enough.”
