Chapter 1: Dogwarts

Chapter Text

Chapter 1: A day in Dogwarts.

It was a cold winter morning in Dogwarts. Martyn feels a shiver carve down to his bones as he watches the horizon, but it’s pointless. None of the teams felt like fighting during the blizzards, the cold offers a momentary peace. He needs a thicker coat. His gaze travels within, looking down at his King. Ren is in the farms, gently tending to the freeze-laced plants. Ren has no trouble with the cold. The fur on his neck and chest keep him warm where his clothes don’t conceal.

“My King!” Martyn calls, gripping a rope hooked on the spire of Dogwarts’ wall. He slides down to the crops and trots over. “Do we-”

He’s interrupted by Ren’s exclamation as he sees him. “Aye! Me hand, you look like you’re trying to become an icicle!”

“Ah, exactly, I was wondering if we have wool for-” Before Martyn can continue, he finds himself pulled close into Ren’s arms, a clawed hand on the back of his head as he sinks into the warmth of the man’s chest. Ren’s cloak is wrapped around the hand.

“There you go, lad. That chill can’t bother you as much.”

Martyn’s muffled as he replies, relieved to have the sanctuary outside of the freezing cold. “..aye, my lord. About that coat?”

“Sheepswool will do you no good, Hand. We’ll use some of the wolf pelts.”

Martyn goes to protest, those are a rare resource, but Ren’s thick arms slip under him and he’s lifted against his king’s chest. Martyn relaxes as he’s carried into the shelter, the roar of the fireplace warming the underside of their kingdom. He slips out of Ren’s arms, sadly, and shakes off like a dog. His coat is pulled off of him.

Ren squints at the coat, turning it a couple times. He goes to a chest and pulls out the backup coat, handing the normal one to Martyn, gesturing for him to hang it up. He obliges. Martyn returns as he’s called with the wolf pelts, guided to settle next to his king as he sews. His head falls into his liege’s lap, Martyn’s eyes fluttering shut under the rumble of Ren’s chest as he hums.

He wakes to a hand in his hair, a gentle coo stirring him to consciousness. “Martyn.. My Hand.. wake up..”

“Ah-” Martyn replies. “My apologies, my Lord.” He shakes his head and stands, stretching a little. He could swear Ren looked flushed. Must be the cold. He pulls on the fur-lined coat, nestling into it. “Oo.. nice and cozy. At this rate we can keep collecting resources while the other groups hide out.”

“Aye,” Ren replies, that usual fanged grin growing on his face. “I might have you deliver some extra pelts to our allies. But if those desert hippies come knocking, we’ll scare them off.” He pats Martyn’s chest. Martyn doesn’t know why his face feels so warm. His gaze flits to the door as the bell tower on the wall rings, rocked by the wind. He peeks outside and immediately slams the door shut, groaning.

“Another blizzard?” “Another blizzard, my King. I’ll go grab the enchanter.”

Ren nods. Martyn steps out, sinking into his coat as the cold nips at his ears and nose. He really wishes he invested in boots and pants, as his sandals get stuck in the snow and the cold bites at his legs in his shorts. He stumbles into the main part of Renchanting, scooping up the enchanting table. He staggers as the wind rips at him, rushing back downstairs and slamming the door shut behind him. He shivers.

Martyn hands Ren the enchanter as he sees his King’s arms being held out. He feels a twinge of shock as it’s shoved to the side and he’s once again wrapped in fur chest heaven. He melts a little, the stinging cold fading from his bones as he tucks into Ren.

“Thank you, my Lord.” Martyn mutters. He feels his face growing red as Ren’s hand runs through his hair. Martyn snakes an arm up and scratches behind his King’s ears in return. He feels the happy growl of Ren’s chest as he continues the motions. Martyn snickers. He’s nudged back as Ren stares down at him, face red.

“..Didya like that, my King?”

Ren stares. Martyn pales nervously. It’s tense for a moment.

Then Ren laughs, a haughty, roaring chuckle as his head lulls back, then he focuses on Martyn again as he giggles, hands on his knees as Ren struggles to breathe. “Haah! Hah! You were so scared!”

Martyn tries to seem unamused, but can’t help a snicker. The two settle back down as the blizzard roars on.
