LO CH 4
"You... uh..." Sans started, then stopped, clearly at a loss for words. What could he even say? 'Thanks for the cosmic exorcism that may or may not have resurrected my dead father'?
"...kid, listen," Sans said finally, his voice flat and serious. "things... things just got complicated. way, way complicated. my... uh... my work just piled up. a skele-ton of it." The pun was automatic, a reflex, but it landed with a dead, heavy thud. There was zero humor in it.
"Are you okay?" Subaru asked quietly. "Is... is he...?"
"he's... here. yeah. we're... we're talking," Sans replied, the statement heavy with a thousand unspoken implications. "kid. what you did... don't. don't you ever, ever do that again. you got it? pulling on strings like that... you're lucky you didn't erase this whole timeline. or just yourself."
"I had to," Subaru whispered. "He was in my head."
"...yeah. i know." Sans let out a long, weary, rattling sigh. "look. i gotta go. i gotta... i gotta deal with this. this... this changes everything. papyrus... the king... alphys... the whole damn world. everything."
"What about Mettaton?" Subaru asked, remembering the immediate, posing threat.
"alphys is still watching you on the cameras. just... keep doing what you're doing. keep... keep being you. spare everyone. keep moving forward. but... i'm... i'm off the board, kid. i can't follow you anymore. i gotta... i have to manage this."
"Sans, wait-"
"just. keep going," Sans insisted, his voice firm. "get to the end. get to asgore. it's the only way now. when you... when you get to the castle, before you see the king... there's a long hallway. a golden one. we call it the 'judgement hall.' wait for me there. got it? don't go see the old man 'til we talk."
The request was absolute. "I'll meet you once you make it to 'Judgement Hall.' We... we need to talk. before the end. about... everything."
Before Subaru could respond, the line clicked dead.
He slowly lowered the phone. He was truly alone now. His one confidant, his fellow looper, was gone, pulled away to deal with the ghost Subaru had brought back to life. He looked forward, toward the searing light and industrial maze of the CORE, and kept walking.
