Chapter Text

Shinichi stared down at the set of keys that sat on the table, feeling a bit despondent but mostly numb. His gaze moved back to the note held loosely in his hand, though he didn’t need to reread it to remember its contents.
A change of scenery can do wonders for the mind. Why don’t you borrow my car and go on a trip? Keep it as long as you would like.

So even the professor didn’t want him around, he thought bitterly, then instantly regretted the thought. He hadn’t been oblivious to the worried looks. He knew the old man cared.
He would do well not to alienate his last remaining friend.
‘Maybe I should get away for a bit,’ he thought to himself, ‘it’s not like anyone would miss me anyway.’
Decision made, he went up to his room and pulled a duffle bag from his closet and stuffed some clothes into it, not caring what he grabbed or bothering to fold it first. He made a quick stop to the bathroom for his toiletries, then was back downstairs, snatched up the keys from the table, and was out the door.
A short walk to the house next door and to where the professor kept his car parked, and he was loading his bag into the trunk. He closed the door, and noticed for the first time the man standing off to the side of the vehicle. He hadn’t noticed the man approach, though that didn’t come as a surprise. Though his uncovered face was strange to him, one look at the man and he instantly knew who he was.
Kaitou KID.
“Looks like you’re going on an adventure,” KID said jovially, “Mind if I join you?”
Shinichi looked at him impassively, but KID’s smile didn’t wilt. “Sure,” he replied with a shrug, “Why the hell not? But you don’t appear to have any bags.”
“I’ll just pick up what I need on the way,” KID answered with a shrug of his own.
Shinichi nodded in acknowledgement, then got in the car, KID sliding into the passenger seat not a moment after. “Just don’t do anything to annoy me, or I won’t hesitate to leave you at the nearest train station.”
“Wouldn’t dream of it,” KID agreed readily.
