Scarecrows, Murder Cults, Raccoons, & Other Road Stops

Summary:

It was supposed to be easy; take the antidote, and slip back into his normal life as Kudou Shinichi. Instead, it has been anything but, and he's starting to wonder if maybe he never should have returned.

Down and depressed, Shinichi borrows the professor's Beetle to get away for a while.
For reasons Shinichi doesn't understand, Kaitou KID decides to tag along.

Notes:

Hello everyone! I’m back again with another Big Bang fic! For those of you who have never heard of a Big Bang event, basically artists collaborate with writers to create a fanfic with accompanying artwork. I hope you like it! Please look forward to more Big Bang fanworks that will be posted throughout the event. If you would like to know more about the event, you can learn more here. Thank you to Mac for hosting, all of your hard work is greatly appreciated!

I also want to thank my artist partner, MintCream
for the adorable artwork that inspired this entire fic, and just being a wonderful partner overall. You can also find her on Twitter here
And of course NobodyInParticular123456 and Pinkspiderlilies
for alpha reading and Ephyna for beta reading for me. And you can find my partner’s artwork for this fic Here
This fic wouldn’t be possible without everyone listed above!

Chapter 1: Prologue

Shinichi stared down at the set of keys that sat on the table, feeling a bit despondent but mostly numb. His gaze moved back to the note held loosely in his hand, though he didn’t need to reread it to remember its contents.

A change of scenery can do wonders for the mind. Why don’t you borrow my car and go on a trip? Keep it as long as you would like.

-Hiroshi

So even the professor didn’t want him around, he thought bitterly, then instantly regretted the thought. He hadn’t been oblivious to the worried looks. He knew the old man cared.

He would do well not to alienate his last remaining friend.

‘Maybe I should get away for a bit,’ he thought to himself, ‘it’s not like anyone would miss me anyway.’

Decision made, he went up to his room and pulled a duffle bag from his closet and stuffed some clothes into it, not caring what he grabbed or bothering to fold it first. He made a quick stop to the bathroom for his toiletries, then was back downstairs, snatched up the keys from the table, and was out the door.

A short walk to the house next door and to where the professor kept his car parked, and he was loading his bag into the trunk. He closed the door, and noticed for the first time the man standing off to the side of the vehicle. He hadn’t noticed the man approach, though that didn’t come as a surprise. Though his uncovered face was strange to him, one look at the man and he instantly knew who he was.

Kaitou KID.

“Looks like you’re going on an adventure,” KID said jovially, “Mind if I join you?”

Shinichi looked at him impassively, but KID’s smile didn’t wilt. “Sure,” he replied with a shrug, “Why the hell not? But you don’t appear to have any bags.”

“I’ll just pick up what I need on the way,” KID answered with a shrug of his own.

Shinichi nodded in acknowledgement, then got in the car, KID sliding into the passenger seat not a moment after. “Just don’t do anything to annoy me, or I won’t hesitate to leave you at the nearest train station.”

“Wouldn’t dream of it,” KID agreed readily.
