Work Text:
Wu Suo Wei is a hard man to pinpoint and Chi Yuan Duan, usually a decisive man, dislikes how his opinions waver on the object of Chi Cheng’s newest rebellious fling.
Wu Suo Wei comes from a humble background with respectable parents and it’s his first dalliance with a man. Chi Yuan Duan’s initial assessment of him was that he was a good kid, able to be reformed since he’s a first-time offender, and could likely do better than his own good-for-nothing son.
Yuan Duan’s intentions to make the boy break up with Chi Cheng proved to be more difficult than expected. It surprised Yuan Duan, perhaps they do believe it’s love, or a twisted, perverted version of it anyway, but one must remember that no matter how much better Su Wei could do for a wife, it’s doubtful her family would possess as much wealth as Chi Cheng’s. Even Yuan Duan could see Suo Wei’s charms after spending days around him but he’s a cheapskate to rival all others, the old man hasn’t lived this many decades without knowing when somebody has their sights on money.
Yuan Duan is not surprised to know that Wu Suo Wei was behind his son driving him to work, replacing the shattered vintage vase, and spending more time with him. His son would never come on his own to make amends and try to convince his father of his future plans, no matter how flimsy they are.
He feels a slight twinge of guilt as Chi Cheng storms off after their argument but what has he got to feel guilty for? It’s his idiotic son who doesn’t understand that everything he’s saying is for Chi Cheng’s own good. His spoiled son might think Yuan Duan is a monster but Wu Suo Wei must have understood his reasoning during the kidnapping if he’s telling Chi Cheng to mend their relationship. Then again, it could all circle back to money. As Chi Cheng spouts garbage about his big dreams for the company, Wu Suo Wei’s true retirement plan is likely Chi Cheng’s inheritance.
Wu Suo Wei, you’re proving to be cleverer than my son.
Too clever by half, Yuan Duan realizes when Wu Suo Wei lands Chi Cheng in jail. Wu Suo Wei’s act nearly had him fooled, no wonder his rebellious yet unsuspecting son got tricked into taking the fall. That stingy man’s retirement plan is probably squirrelling away who knows how much from their company, finding a woman to marry and have children with, and snickering about the right fool who fell for it all.
Some lessons must be learned the hard way and Chi Cheng has a lot left to learn.
That wretched boy dares to show his face at Chi Yuan Duan’s home in the middle of this fiasco. Yuan Duan realizes he underestimated both Wu Suo Wei’s nerves and his affinity for acting. Just selling a few things that can be bought back when Chi Cheng is released and a rabbit candy are all it takes for Wu Suo Wei to trap his wife the way he did his son. But his wife is a clear thinker and a better judge of character than Chi Cheng, it makes Yuan Duan wonder if his fight to save his son truly is futile.
Guo Cheng Yu comes with a boy named Xiao Shuai on the day Chi Cheng is released. Yuan Duan knows that Cheng Yu has the same vices as his son but at least his godson successfully works in his father’s business and will have enough to retire without children. If Yuan Duan was going to get dealt a son with such a chaotic private life, it should’ve at least been Cheng Yu who is not only more filial but also good at dyeing hair to boot.
Chi Cheng looks rough when he exists, unshaved beard and 10 pounds lighter. Although Yuan Duan thinks it’s good for Chi Cheng to face such hardship, it startles him to see his son in such a state.
Yuan Duan watches Chi Cheng hug the others even if the two of them have never been ones to hug. Offering to drive is more their father-son style but Chi Cheng apparently didn’t plan to give them a ride this time, likely leaving them behind to go see his precious Wu Suo Wei. Yuan Duan sighs.
Now that everybody in the family accepts the relationship but himself, Chi Cheng said that he will only come to the house if Wu Suo Wei is welcome. With a glare from his wife, Yuan Duan did not protest.
So here Wu Suo Wei is at their house again, not due to kidnapping and not to apologize but by Chi Cheng’s side, smiling sweetly and interacting with the family.
Duo Duo loves Wu Suo Wei and Yuan Duan watches Chi Cheng watch Wu Suo Wei. Earlier he had glimpsed them in an embrace as he walked by a sitting room with the door slightly ajar. Yuan Duan had sneered but overhearing Chi Cheng reassure Wu Suo Wei that everything will be okay and that he’s by his side gave the father pause. It feels like every time they meet, Yuan Duan sees a new face of his son due to Wu Suo Wei. Witnessing this delicate way Chi Cheng interacted with Wu Suo Wei made Yuan Duan walk away when he saw them leaning in for a kiss instead of being appalled at what they were doing under his roof.
Yuan Duan had thought Wu Suo Wei a more simple man during his initial assessment but he proved to be more tenacious. He will not relinquish his hold on Chi Cheng and Chi Cheng has made his plans clear. Yuan Duan wonders if his fickle son will truly follow through this time.
