Chapter Text
"Time of birth, 22:15."
"Very well, we will inform Handler of this."
Click.
Loid let out a sigh, hanging up the phone on his side. That's it, he was officially retired.
It felt strange to think about it. After years of relentlesly risking his life, he could now relax and enjoy it for once. It felt unreal, like he didn't deserve it.
He went back to the hospital room where Yor was staying in. She was just as he left her, securely holding their child while resting her eyes. He watched her in silence from the entrance for a bit.
Ever since the doctor handed her their baby, she hasn't let go of him and he wouldn't have it any other way. Even with how tired she appeared, she also seemed so happy. Letting her have this child was probably the best decision he had ever made during this mission.
Suddenly, she oppened her eyes and stared right back at him. Of course she would notice him staring, that's how their whole relationship started.
"Oh, you're back." She mumbled.
"I just finished calling Franky and my agency. Anya is already asleep, so Franky will tell her tomorrow morning."
"So everyone know about the baby now?"
"Except your brother. I'll let you tell him yourself if it's okay with you."
"Alright fine. Tomorrow then, I'm tired."
"I know, I know." He chuckled.
He then went to sit on the chair next to her bed.
She was gently stroking their child's back while humming a small lullaby. She was already so motherly. He had no doubt she would have no trouble with him. Just like with Anya.
"Yor, can I... Can I hold him for a bit please?" He asked a bit sheepishly.
"Ah! Yes, yes, of course."
She extended her arms towards him. The boy seemed upset to be away from her chest and probably would have started to cry if he didn't hurry and held him close to his own body. Once the child felt his warmth, he quickly calmed down.
Now that he had his son in his arms, he could really feel the weight of it, or rather lack of. The baby was so small, so much more than he ever expect. In his line of work, he obliviously never got the occasion to see a newborn with his own eyes and to think that the first time would be his son was unimaginable.
Glancing at Yor, he noticed that she was observing him, which made him feel a bit akward. Should he give her the baby back? No, not yet. He wanted to hold him a little longer. So he decided to mimic her previous gesture by gently rubbing his back.
This seemed to content her and she turned her head away, closing her eyes for a well deserve rest.
As for him, he didn't sleep that much that night. Instead, he spent most of if holding his son and thinking about the future of the Forger family.
What started as a fake throwaway family for his mission was now becoming his new reality. He was no longer a cold and emotionless spy, he was a proud father of two. An adopted six year old and now a baby.
And he wanted to do this right. Not that he ever messed up with Anya, except maybe that one time at the start. But this time, he had experience, he should be able to do it perfectly on the first go.
This little one hasn't seen anything from the world just yet. So everything he taught him had to be done right. So that one day he may become someone great and maybe even chage the world for the better. And not end up like him, someone who gave up his identity and everything he knew in the name of 'world peace'.
He sat next to Yor's bed with their son in his arms until the early hours of the day.
And then, at around 3 in the morning, a surprise visitor came to greet the Forger parents. A nurse, probably in her 50, with long strawberry blond hairs tied in a bun. She had square glasses with a slight tint in them, making it difficult to tell her eyes color. The woman's presence was enough to awake Yor from her slumber and she seemed quite alarmed to see her there.
"Good morning." The nurse greeted. "I am Mrs. Sherwood and I will be the nurse in charge of your postpartum stay."
Loid couldn't help a frown recognizing his superior in disguise. What was she doing here? Surely she wasn't going to send him on one last mission before his retirement.
"Now then, if you don't mind, may I take the child for a quick examination please?" She then requested.
Before Loid could debate wether to listen or defy her order, he felt a tight grip on his arm holding him in place. Looking at the one responsible for this, he was faced with a very worried Yor. She was not trusting her and he couldn't blame her.
"There's no need to be scared." The nurse reassured. "This is a simple formality to make sure your baby is healthy. But if it can help, mister over here can come along, I don't mind."
That's when Loid noticed the hidden message she was sending behind those words.
'Come with me agent, we need to talk.'
So he turned to Yor and gently pushed her hand away.
"I'll go, Yor." He said in a low voice. "Don't worry, nothing bad will happen to him. I'll make sure of it."
She looked back at him, still unsure. But after a few more promises that he would protect their child, she finally let go of him.
She watched them leave, following them with her eyes until they were out of sight.
---
Handler led Twillight to a nearby room. She closed the door behind them and instructed him to place the baby on a small mattress on the counter. Then, she approached, pushing a cart filled with medical tools.
She started by checking its temperature, then his heartbeat, and then his weight. Twillight was right behind her, watching her every move.
"Seem like a pretty healthy baby. Congratulation agent."
"Mhm."
"What's wrong Twillight? I thought you would be glad to hear that."
"I am, but... Is there anything else you wanted to tell me?"
"No."
"Really? So you aren't sending me on a mission?"
"Do you really want to leave on a mission so soon after the birth of your child?" Handler asked with a judging look.
"Well, not really, but-"
"Right now, your work should be the last of your concern. Just focus on learning how to take care of your baby and we will contact you in a few months to discuss of the next step."
"R-right, understood."
"Now then, let's return to your wife before she start to worry."
But as Handler was about to pick him up, the baby suddenly got upset and started to cry at the top of his lungs.
Twillight immediately sprung into action. He jumped in front of his supperior and snatched his son into his arms. He held him close to his chest, rubbed his back and even tried to rock him back and forth. But nothing seemed to work and the child was still screaming as loudly as he could.
The longer this was going the more he was panicking. This was bad, he couldn't bring him back to Yor like this, she was going to freak out. But he tried everything he knew already. What else was he supposed to do?
Suddenly, the door opened and in came Yor.
"Y-Yor?! What are you doing here?"
"I thought I heard him cry." She mumbled.
She walked up to him and took the child from him.
"It's okay sweetie, mama is here."
She held him close, swaying left and right while humming an small lullaby. It didn't take long for the baby to finally calm down and soon enough, he was completely silent once again.
She then left the two agents, wobbling back to her room. Twillight watched the whole scene completely baffled.
How did she do that?
As if reading his mind, Handler was there to reassure him.
"Don't sweat it too much Twillight. Every kids has different ways to calm them down. You'll figure out yours soon enough."
"What if I don't?"
"Don't say that, this is not how I trained you." She scolded. "You've adapted to way worse situations in the past, and in record time too. You'll be fine, just remember what I taught you, observe your surrounding and take note of everything that may help you blend in."
The man still seemed down which was starting to frustrate Handler. She knew what he was capable of, he just needed a bit more trust in his abilities.
"Twillight, don't tell me you're caving under the pressure now! Yes, it is new territory, but it shouldn't matter. I saw you learn and master new skills overnight just to accomplish a mission, so you can't tell that me that you aren't able to handle this of all things."
"I..."
"Maybe it would help if I gave you a few pointers, huh? Come along then."
And before he could give an answer, Handler pratically dragged him back to Yor's room.
---
By then, Yor had already regained her bed with the baby securely in her arms. But he wasn't resting peacefully anymore, he seemed a bit agitated. Stirring around in her arms with quite the upset face. Yor was doing her best to calm him down, but it was clear that something was going on.
When she sensed the two secret spies enter the room, she looked up, her distress clear in her face.
"Looks like someone's hungry." The older woman commented. "Say, Mrs. Forger, have you tried breastfeeding him yet?"
"Ah, n-no. I-I was so tired, a-and it was so late. I just fell asleep." She answered, feeling a bit ashamed.
"Well then, let's get to it. Do you need me to guide you through it?"
She nodded.
So Handler, or rather Mrs. Sherwood, walked Yor through breastfeeding her child. Twillight watched and took note of every steps. He doubted she would need to be taught twice, but anything related to taking care of their son was worth commiting into memory, just in case.
Soon, the baby was drinking from her breast and Yor couldn't be happier.
"Loid look, it's working! I'm feeding our son!"
"Yes you are." He answered with an amused grin.
Once the baby was done drinking, Mrs. Sherwood took the baby away to place him in a small crib next to the hospital bed.
"Now that you know how to do it, remember to check for any sign that he is hungry." She instructed. "At this stage, he will be eating about every two hours."
"Every two hours, got it." Yor said confidently.
"Good. I will leave you two to rest for a while and will be back with breakfast in a few hours. And when I do, Mr. Forger, it will be your turn to learn."
As if on instinct, Loid stood straight, resisting the urge to salute.
"You will learn how to perfectly change a diaper, like a pro. Understood?"
"Yes, ma'm!"
She gave him a small grin and under the wife's chuckles, left the room.
