Summary
Back in South Hui, an entire lifetime ago, they both dreamed of their very own paradise. In it, Xiao Shuhe would have died of old age, in a small cottage somewhere far outside the capital, surrounded by the scent of pear blossoms. He would have died without any regrets, unafraid to leave the mortal world after a long life well-lived. He would have died knowing he was loved by the very same person waiting for him in the Yellow Springs.
He would have never died the way he did—in a cold, damp dungeon, with his back soaked in blood, a disgraced emperor of a kingdom long since fallen.
