The rain hasn’t stopped, and now the wind has picked up more than when they left the office. When he half turns on her stoop, she reaches out to tug his arm.
“You can’t go out in this, Clark.”
He brushes her off, giving her a reassuring smile as he tugs his coat collar higher on his neck.
“Come up, you can dry off inside.”
He looks back to the street, to the sound of whistling leaves and the view of couples with interlaced fingers running to make it home.
It’s apropos, he thinks.
