Water's Reflection

A little more insight on Sui's character

Work Text:

Water is such an interesting element. It twists and bends to the will of those around it, yet it can also be a rigid unmoving force. It brings life and takes it away. It is a part of every living thing. Sui never found their position to be particularly stressful. They didn’t control all of reality like Anni, they didn’t need to shepherd the dead like Teris, they weren't out starting a war like Fvei would be, nor did they tease the threadborn like Ven did. Still, there were some days they preferred to stay in their realm and observe the aquatic life.

In one corner, the sea slugs were inspecting the new coral Sui had made and in another, a loon called out to its mate. Sui found it fascinating just how different each creature was even though they all relied on water in some way. They supposed the gods were similar. They all relied on Anni in some way even though they were different in function and personality. They were a lot more independent long ago, before the Protovok tried to overthrow them. To prevent another uprising, Anni decided to keep a closer eye on the gods. Sui didn’t care that much, but the other gods made a bigger fuss. Ven especially. They even brought up Louise as a counter to Anni’s decision.

Sui sighed softly. Their sweet blackbird truly was free from any cages. While Anni could still give them orders, they could do whatever they wanted with their performances and go anywhere on their travels. They weren’t a god, so their activities were mostly unimportant. Sui thought otherwise. They would come back from a long adventure and gift Sui little souvenirs and trinkets. If Sui was extra lucky, they’d come back with a song. As cliche as it sounded, the biggest gift was seeing how happy they were. They could travel through a terrible blizzard and Lou would still come back with the biggest smile. They were currently away collecting more stories, so Sui would have to wait patiently for their return.

Sui wasn't sure they were capable of feeling lonely. Because water was a part of almost everything, they were always connected. Even when Louise went to a far off universe, Sui could still vaguely sense them. Sui still preferred when Lou was right in front of them, however. Lou seemed to like this and even told them their feelings made them the most human out of all the gods. Sui always found the compliment interesting. Many of their followers told them they were very approachable and easy to talk to. The threadborn seemed to think it was a good thing, so Sui didn’t object.

They brought their attention back to the loon, who had now found its mate and was snuggling to her closely. Love was something else Sui seemed to take interest in. Anni was too omnipotent to care, Fvei saw it as pointless, Ven was too immature to understand, and Teris wasn’t interested. Love was such a wonderful feeling and it came in many forms. Even if romance wasn’t desired, one could still have a deep bond with friends or family. Sui couldn’t imagine a world without it.

Soft bells chimed in the distance. Someone was summoning them. They’d have to continue their pondering later. They quickly fixed their hair and made their way to their scrying mirror.
