Chapter 1: Injuries and Butterflies

Chapter Text

You just moved into this new neighbourhood to start over and leave behind your old life. This is a new start!

You were currently carrying your heavy boxes inside. You already carried like half of your boxes in, and your arms are starting to ache. So, you decided to take a small break on your doorstep by sitting on the stairs, slinging your arms around your legs, as you placed your chin on your left knee. You tilted your head up, observing the clear, blue sky. You saw a bird helping her small babies to feed.  You smiled to yourself, because you could start over. You have a new life, and you can make new friends. You for sure are going to miss your family and other friends, but you won't forget them.

Julie was whistling as she walked down the neighbourhood, thinking about who she's gonna play with. As she looked forward, she saw an unfamiliar face and a new house. She realized that there is a new neighbour! Someone new!

Her eyes widened at the thought of someone new. Another friend! Another someone she could know about! She gasped, dramatically. "A new neighbour?! Carrying boxes right in front of me?!" Before you could even react, she rushed over to you with excitement. "Oh my goodness, gracious! You're new," She gestures at you, "you're new," she points at you accusingly, "YOU'RE NEW!" She beamed with excitement. "This is the best day ever!"

Your head snapped up to Julie, startled by her as she interrupted your observation of the sky. Without hesitation, Julie cups her palms around her mouth and shouts to the entire neighbourhood.

"EVERYONE!!! We have a new neighbour!!" Her voice echoes through the streets, and you could swear you saw some curtains twitching. You were surprised to see that after a few seconds, neighbors were approaching you. You saw a green bug with blue hair, peeking his head out of his shop, with an amused smile for Julie's dramatics. You saw someone with a sun-shaped head run after you, like she was late to an interview.

As she arrived, panting with her hands on her knees, she looked down on you. "Are you..." she exhales before inhaling dramatically again, "...the new NEIGHBOUR?!" You couldn't help but break into a laugh. "Yes, I am."

You saw a Blue dog amble over to you and the other two girls you don't know. He had big dark blue ears, colourful clothes, and a pipe in his mouth. He eyed your ridiculously large boxes, raising an eyebrow. "If you drop one of those, I'm claiming it as a new property."

You snorted at his joke and shook your head. "Pfft..."  You looked behind the blue dog, seeing a flustered young lady. She was fiddling with her colourful wings, avoiding eye contact as she arrived. "...Hello, I am Poppy Partridge..." She felt her cheeks heat up, glancing at your heavy-looking boxes, her eyes widened. "Oh, dear... do you need help carrying them inside?"

Your heart softened at her soft-spoken and shy presence. You smiled gently, adjusting the way you sat, stretching your legs out, and leaning back on your arms."That would be really nice, Poppy. But for now, I am taking a small break." You tilted your head, your smile widening.

You rocked your legs left and right when, suddenly, you accidentally hit someone. You looked up immediatly, seeing a yellow dude with a blue pompadour with a friendly smile. "Hello, neighbour." his voice was monotone, slow, and easy-going.

Before you could apologize, Julie burst out, introducing everybody.

"Ahh!!!! I'll introduce everybody for you!! I am Julie Joyful! She pointed at herself before moving on with the other neighbours. "This is Poppy Partridge, as you already know, obviously." She rolled her eyes playfully with a snort.

Eddie, who was a bit late because he had to give out some mail, came stumbling and panting. Julie immediatly noticed him and moved towards him. She grabbed your hand as she pulled you up to your feet, gesturing at Eddie. "This is Eddie Dear! He is our Mailman, who is married to Frank Frankly!!" She shifted her grip on your shoulders, showing you who Frank Frankly is.

You hadn't even noticed the grumpy-looking dude before. He was hidden between the other neighbours. "He loves flutterflies, and can be such a huge nerd about it." She giggled, and you followed after. "Julie, they're called butterflies..." He rolls his eyes, sighing. "Not flutterflies." Julie giggled and gestured at him. "See? This is what I mean!"

She then pointed at a store with the name "Howdy's place"

"There is Howdy Pillar! He has everything in his store!"  She then turns and shows you the sunny-looking person. "This is Sally Starlet! She often wants us to play for her plays! Julie leans closer, whispering. "She is the best actor I've ever seen!!"

Before you could even react or do anything, Julie gestured to the yellow dude. "This is Wally Darling! He is the best painter and the nicest neighbour in the neighbourhood!" This impressed you. All of these people were already super nice. You'd like to know how nice Wally is. "...Wally..." You tasted his name on your tongue. "Yep! Also, the last neighbour is Wally's home! They're really adorable!" Julie beamed happily.

After all the neighbours were introduced, Poppy helped you carry your boxes inside, and the neighbours had a quick conversation before leaving. But the one who still stayed was Wally. You had your hands on your hips, looking at the boxes that were carried inside. You turned your head to the side and found him next to you, staring at you with those black eyes. You flinched back for a second, not expecting him to be there. "Whoa, Wally! Didn't expect you there...!" You chuckled nervously.

Wally looked at you with those unblinking eyes. "...Sorry, neighbor." He tilts his head, looking at you. "...Moving is... a lot of work," he glances at the boxes, holding his hands. "I thought you... might need some help." He looks back at you, his smile widening. "...I could help you... arrange things, if you'd like, neighbour..."

You felt your heart swell with love. This was so nice and sweet! You just stared at him for a moment before nodding. "Sure, you could open the boxes with this." You turned around, grabbed the box cutter that was lying on one of the boxes, before handing it to him. "Be careful, it's sharp."

Wally laughs, "Ha ha ha... I'll be careful," Wally reassures, turning the box cutter in his hand. "Though... I'm more used to... paint brushes than sharp things." Wally looks up, tilting his head as his smile softens. "...I want to help you feel more... at home... So, with what box should we start?" Wally turns to the boxes. "...The one written 'bathroom' or 'kitchen', neighbor?"

You turn to the boxes, thinking. You point at one of the boxes. "Let's start with the kitchen one?"

Wally nodded, kneeling to the box, written 'kitchen' on it. "...Kitchen it is..."  he carefully cuts the box and opens it.  He looked up from the box, placing the box cutter on the floor as he stood up. "What now, neighbor?" Wally asked as he tilted his head, interlacing his fingers in front of him.

"Now, we will take the box and go to my kitchen!"

Wally nods, wrapping his arms around the box. "...I got it, neighbor." But he obviously doesn't. You immediatly rushed to help, holding the other side of the box, carefully putting it down again. You look at him before coming up with an idea.

"On three, okay?"

"...Okay, neighbor."

"One... Two... Three-"

At three, your fingers somehow slipped as you lifted it, making it fall on Wally's shoe. Wally's eyes widened when he felt the sudden pain bloom in his bone. "OW!" His voice broke out.

You gasped, slapping a hand over your mouth, "Sorry, Wally!!" He hopped on one foot, grabbing your arm as he balanced himself. "Ow, ow, ow..." You held him in your arms, slinging his arm over your shoulder and one of your arms under his arm. "Let's get you to my couch, okay?"

"...You really don't have to, neighbor. I'm okay." He admitted, wincing when he felt his feet still hurt. "Wally, you're clearly hurt. Let me help you." Wally sighed, nodding. "...If you say so, neighbor."

You grabbed a stool and placed his leg on it. You went to your kitchen, opened the freezer, and pulled one of those blue freezing pads out. You made your way back to Wally, who was on the couch, observing you. You kneeled in front of his leg, untying his shoes and freeing his injured foot from his shoe. You noticed the heart-shaped detail on the back of his shoe. "You got really fancy shoes, Wallly."

Wally is surprised by your compliment. "Ha ha ha, you think so?" Wally watches you apply the freezing pad on his injured foot. "...You have a good eye for... details." He observes as you place your hands on your lap.

"Thank you, Wally." You say with a cheeky smile. And he responds with a soft one. "...You're welcome, neighbor."

Weeks have passed.

Your house was now decorated with decor, and you had your furniture. You sighed and stepped outside your doorstep, wanting some fresh air. You saw Wally, Julie, and some other neighbours in Frank's backyard. You raised an eyebrow. You wanted to know what they were doing, so you grabbed one of your cardigans and took it on as you walked outside. When you arrived, you saw Julie and Sally trying to capture one Butterfly, while Wally and Frank already had one.

Wallly sensed your presence and looked up from the butterfly that was resting on his index finger. "Neighbor!" He said excitedly. Julie, Sally, and Frank looked up to find you standing there, confused. "What are you guys doing?"

Julie hopped towards you excitedly, "We are looking for butterflies!" She beamed and grabbed your hand. "Look! Wally and Frank have one!" You looked over Frank's shoulder and saw a butterfly with blue wings and yellow patterns. "Whoa, they really are beautiful..." You mutter under your breath.

"Would you like... to see this butterfly too, neighbor?" You heard Wally ask behind you. You turned around, your eyes immediatly landing on the butterfly on his finger. Wally holds up his hand with the butterfly on his finger.

"Butterflies are... peaceful creatures, just like some... people." Wally gave you a meaningful look. You leaned closer, inspecting the butterfly.

"They're beautiful."

"...They're beautiful." You both say at the same time. You glance at each other, surprised, before Julie and Sally finally caught a butterfly too and had to tell everybody in a loud way.
