Work Text:

A hammering sound echoed through the air as Rin headed towards the training grounds, her head turning to watch the citizens of Konoha putting together the stalls for the summer festival, and her hands tucked behind her back. At the same time, her mouth pressed together before continuing to the training field.

Kakashi was already there, up in a tree, aloof to the world going on around him, eyes distant as he spun kunai on his fingers, looking relatively bored while Rin wondered—

“Should I ask?” Rin thought to herself, thinking Kakashi would turn her down, given—

She’d heard the whispers from the villagers regarding his father and him, and observed the cold way the village treated him.

“But he’s so alone, so maybe,” Rin took a deep breath. “Regarding the summer festival?”

Kakashi turned to look at her, the kunai no longer spinning on his fingers, looking just as bored.

“Well, uh…” Rin’s hands clutched together nervously behind her back.

“Yeah?” Kakashi asked.

“Are you going?” Rin said. “To the festival, that is?”

Kakashi’s eyes blinked, his head turned to look away, and nothing came out of his mouth.

“You’re going to the festival, Rin?”

Rin turned, mouth pressed into a thin line, seeing Obito wondering why, of all times today, he had to sh. “I was trying to ask Kakashi if he’d like to go.”

“Sounds fun,” Minato said, having also shown up.

“Yeah,” Obito said, pushing his index fingers together, a slight blush spreading across his face.

“You weren’t the one I was trying to invite,” Rin thought to herself, but a quick look at Kakashi—

He fidgeted, looking at Minato.

“So we’ll all meet up?” Minato said.

“What about Kushina-nee?” Kakashi asked.

Their sensei grinned from ear to ear, looking at Rin. “I’m sure she’ll enjoy meeting up with Rin before we go, right?”

“Right,” Rin said, relaxing, knowing Minato was attempting to help her out.

“But if it’s a couple’s thing…” Obito said, glaring at Kakashi.

“It’s a team bonding thing,” Minato corrected. “And yes, Kushina adores you three as much as I do.”

Meaning Kakashi couldn’t get out of it.

Rin sighed.

After training—

She wanted to tell Obito not to try to sneak pictures of her as he was wont to do, something she’d wished she’d noticed earlier, having no idea how many pictures her childhood friend had snuck of her.

To which—

Rin wasn’t so sure she wanted to dress in a kimono for the festival, because Obito was likely getting the wrong idea, having already expressed the idea he thought of it as a date between him and Rin, when Rin’s original aim was to go to the festival with Kakashi, even though she knew, without Minato’s interference, Kakashi would have been beyond reluctant to go with her.

“You look pretty in your kimono,” Kushina said, helping Rin tie her kimono off.

“You as well, Kushina-san,” Rin said, clipping a hair clip in her hair, hoping—

Looking in the mirror, she wondered if Kakashi would notice her, but upon arriving where the three males were waiting—

Kakashi looked away, while Obito started blushing, but then—

“You’re very pretty today,” Obito said, then, when Kakashi didn’t respond, he elbowed their teammate in the ribs, glaring at him.

“Uh, yeah,” Kakashi said, and for a moment, his cheeks flustered like Obito’s. They started walking ahead of Kushina and Minato, with Obito talking about everything they’d be doing without asking either of the other two. Still, both boys were dressed in a kimono and hakama themselves.

Rin started to lean over, to look around Obito and ask Kakashi what he wanted to do when—

Kushina’s hand shot out, grabbing Obito’s arm. “What are you doing?”

“Huh?” Obito said.

Rin looked down, and—

Her facial features twisted. “Obito!”

There was that camera, up his sleeve, to try and catch pictures of her in her kimono, while Kakashi, oblivious as always, looked on confused, but then looked down.

“How can Kakashi not have noticed?” Rin thought to herself. “That Obito’s taking pictures of me in secret.”

“Oh. Obito’s hobby,” Kakashi said. “Photography?” Then, “I’d like to see sometime.”

Obito stiffened, “Uh, I’m not that good.”

“More like he only takes pictures of me,” Rin thought to herself. “Which means Kakashi has noticed, but is oblivious to what’s really going on.”

“Can I try?”

“It’s my camera,” Obito protested.

Kushina’s hand tightened on Obito’s wrist. “Why not?”

Obito sighed, handing over his camera to Kakashi as he explained the device's features, which not many people had. At the same time, Kakashi listened, nodding his head. He then went ahead and took pictures of the festival, and Obito looked on, sighing.

“You’re lucky,” Minato said, “That Kakashi hasn’t realized your hobby is actually taking pictures of Rin, but you might want to think twice about said hobby, Obito.”

Obito cringed, then looked away while Kushina hovered over Kakashi and the camera, “A picture of Minato and me, then I’ll take a picture of you three, okay.”

“Okay,” Kakashi said.

“Why can’t he take a picture of all four…” Obito said, only to receive an elbow from Rin, who glared at him. He let out a squeak and looked away, having gotten caught.

“I’ll develop the pictures,” Minato said, smiling, meaning whatever pictures Obito had managed to get in his collection wouldn’t end up in said collection, but a look from sensei—

Obito fidgeted.

Rin smiled, glad Obito wouldn’t get what he wanted, but when it came time to take a picture with the three of them—

Rin purposefully grabbed Kakashi’s arm with both of her hands and leaned in. At the same time, Minato positioned Obito on the other side of Kakashi, which resulted in a sour look on Obito’s face, almost as if he knew the picture in question wouldn’t be to his liking. At the same time, Kakashi noticed the miniature camera was so much different than the camera used to take their group and ID photos.

Rin laughed, knowing Kakashi found something new to learn about, something that wasn’t entirely about shinobi.

And when she got the picture of the three of them, Kakashi looked less grumpy than in their group picture, but it wasn’t a picture she hoped Obito would be fond of.

Notes:

For those thinking it's out of character for Obito to try to take pictures of Rin in secret, that's canon; it's something that's gone relatively unnoticed because the focus is always on Obito trying to kiss the framed photo of his team without examining the photos on his pinboard which contain quite a few of Rin without her being noticed.
