That Last Summer

30+ Fanfic Prompt--Last Summer

Work Text:

If he had known that it would have been their last summer, would he have done anything differently?

Alec asks himself that frequently now.  He looks at the piece of broken trailer that he keeps on his desk, emblazoned with the word HOPE.  Now that he’s home again, he’s expected to simply get back to business, as though the last two months never happened.

He still misses Pam so much, so much it still aches.  But he doesn’t dare say anything.  After all, it’s his own fault for keeping her on after Henry told him to fire her.  It’s his fault for falling for her, despite somehow knowing she wouldn’t stay, couldn’t stay.

What if he’d gone with her?  Would they still be together now?  Would they both have gone over that cliff, together in death as in life?  If so, surely he wouldn’t be living with her memory now.

His eyes slide over to the picture of Pam and Black Sand.  Both young and beautiful and gone far too soon.  He can’t help but wonder what might have been.

He takes another drink of coffee, now cold and bitter like the weather.  Days like this, spring seems so far away, and summer feels like too much to hope for.

If he had know that it would be their last summer, would he have done anything differently?
