Figuring things out

Summary:

Owen tells Blue he's in love with Barry.

Work Text:

He carefully pet his eldest, who gave him a worried look. She must have realized something was wrong and reacted out of worry. He debated telling her and scanned the area to make sure no one was around to overhear what he was about to say.

When he found it was just him and Blue, he decided to tell his oldest what was wrong to at least get it off his chest.

“I think I might be in love with Barry.”

He blushed, and Blue nuzzled him with her tail wagging behind her.

“I don’t know what to do. I thought I was in love with Claire.”

Blue growled a little when Claire was mentioned, and he smiled, rubbing the side of her head.

“You destroyed my pants on purpose, didn’t you?”

She didn’t say anything and instead looked away, refusing to respond.

“I need you and your sisters to stay out of trouble. After what you did with Hoskins, I’m going to have InGen breathing down my neck for a while.”

Blue whimpered and nuzzled his hand in apology.

“I don’t know what's gotten into you four. You’ve been acting so weird.”

He sighed, slouching from exhaustion with how the day was going.

“What am I going to do, Blue? I doubt Barry likes me like that.”

Blue nuzzled him and glanced at Barry, still on the catwalk. He didn’t know what she was saying, although it seemed like she wanted him to tell Barry his feelings.

“I can’t tell him Blue. I don’t want to ruin what we have. I need to find some way to get rid of this crush before I ruin everything.”

Blue gave him an unhappy look and snarled.

“Blue?”

He gave her a worried look, thinking it was directed at him, when Blue suddenly ran over to the gate, tail lashing angrily. The others followed, and Barry called for him to come see. He rushed up the catwalk, heart in his throat, to see multiple vehicles speeding down the road.

He cursed Hoskins as InGen security stepped out. Scanning the crowd, he noticed Hoskins wasn’t there.

“Why are you here?”

He demanded taking two stairs at a time to meet security at the edge of the padlock. Behind him, his girls paced anxiously, occasionally snarling at the guards.

He could see the way they tensed with fear. A few reached for their weapons, and he snapped at them to put them away.

“You’re upsetting my raptors; you need to leave now.”

“Hoskins told us the Blue one attacked him.”

“Hoskins was antagonizing her. She was merely giving him a warning.”

“We have been ordered to supervise the raptors and determine if they need to be put down.”

“Like hell you will.”

He snapped, glaring them down. His heart was racing with anxiety, and even though he loved his girls, they weren’t helping. He could hear them anxiously crying out to him as they threatened security to keep them away from their pack. He desperately wanted to rush inside and comfort his girls and reassure them that everything was going to be okay.

“You need to leave.”

Barry rushed out phone in hand.

“I’ve spoken with Masrani and told him the situation.”

A moment later, the head guard's phone rang. He answered it, and he was chewed out and told to leave. He sagged in relief, watching as they got back in their cars and drove off. He turned to Barry and hugged him.

“You’re a lifesaver.”

Barry held him close, and he blushed, forcing himself to pull away.

“Let’s go check on our girls.”

He tried to will the blush off his face as he moved to check on his girls with unsteady legs. They were right there waiting for him at the gate, and he pet each of their snouts.

“Owen, are you okay?”

He nodded absentmindedly as he reassured himself that his girls were safe. Barry put a hand on his shoulder, and he leaned into his touch slightly, needing the comfort.

“We need to talk about what happened and what’s been going on with our girls.”

He nodded and pet Blue one last time, telling her to watch over the others while they were gone.

She nodded in agreement, and he followed Barry into his office.

“What notes do you have?”

“What’s going on, Owen? You’ve been acting weird all day.”

“I haven’t.”

He looked away, not wanting to confess his feelings.”

Barry sighed and thankfully moved away from it, even as he added.

“Your mood has been upsetting the raptors all day, especially Blue.”

“What have you noticed about the girl's weird behavior before today?”

“I’ve noticed they’ve been planning something, and we originally thought they were planning an escape. During their hunt, I had people check on the padlock, and it was fine. We also learned today that the raptors have figured out a way to climb the walls, which meant they could have done that this entire time and chose not to.”

“So what are they really planning?”

He thought back to their weird behavior and suddenly got an insane idea.”

“What if they were planning a date?”

“A date?”

Berry looked at him as though he were crazy.

“I’ve shown them human movies before, and it makes sense in a weird way. The girls have been acting weird because they know that I’ll invite you along if they’ve been rowdy in the days leading up to the hunt. Charlie gave you flowers because she wanted you to give those flowers to me. That’s why Delta pushed you towards me, and they seemed upset when I thanked them for the flowers. I’ll have to confirm with Claire, but I don’t think there was anything wrong with the dinosaur.”

“Are you sure? It was weird that they didn’t eat it.”

“Maybe it was because the dinosaur was for us. They wanted us to have a meal together while they hunted for their own prey.”

“Do you think that's why Blue doesn’t like Claire?”

“I think so. She sees her as competition.”

“That also explains why she attacked Hoskins. He was in your personal space, and she probably saw him as a suitor for your affection.”

He started laughing in surprise, and Barry stared at him.

“I’m sorry. It’s just crazy thinking our girls are trying to set us up.”

Barry froze and then gave a nervous laugh.

“Maybe we should go check on them. I don’t want them plotting another date.”

He nodded, good mood fading when he remembered that Barry didn’t like him like that.”

“Sure, I think that’s a good idea.”

They awkwardly left, and he reminded himself to talk to his girls later and figure out what they were thinking.
