Summary
The sound of gunfire, echoing from every corner of the trench, did not interrupt Private Raeken's concentration. He could not—did not want—to be interrupted. And, to his delight, he was not.
On that dull day, Theo was very lucky. Not only had he found a pen and paper, a rarity among the other combatants, but he had also been grateful for the kindness of Adam, his trenchmate, who offered him fifteen minutes to write a letter to his "little sweetheart."
Theo gladly accepted, but he almost laughed at his colleague's insinuation.
He leaned against the earthen wall, relaxed his tense muscles, and calmed his troubled mind. He pressed the thick tip of the pen against the yellowish-white paper and, weeping with longing, wrote to Liam Dunbar—his safe haven, his friend, his beloved.
