The Horse Dancer Job

Summary:

A little creative magic and a strange ally lead to win for the Leverage team.

Notes:

Okay, wow...I'm going to start by stating that I had a very weird ship AU I'd imagine as a neurodivergent teen horse girl and I decided to include it in my ship writing challenge. I'm definitely a little sad that I had to write it in two hours on a Wednesday night because I want to know more about this con, but I did it. I really did it.

Work Text:

Day 6: Sophie/Sterling "They magically get turned into horses"

"This is so messed up. Alana Alvarez and her horse dancers will be put out on the street for no reason other than greed," Breanna states as Sophie enters the room.

Eliot looks as if he's about to respond to this, but then he looks up and growls, not at Sophie, but at the person entering the room behind her.

Of course she had never expected that when she finally moved on after Nate's passing it would actually be Jim Sterling she fell for, but it had happened and although most of the team has just humored this, Eliot still seems enraged by it. Still, it isn't for him to decide who she can and can't date and Sophie is happy.

"So, do we have any more information about Sylvia Weatherspoon?"

This time, it's Hardison who grimaces before responding, "Yeah, we found her Facebook and she's a big fan of old men with red hats and conspiracy theories."

"Which is not shocking," Harry mutters looking disappointed. "She definitely looked like that type of person."

"It seems like a lot of your marks are those types of people now days. Really a pity that you don't get a bit of diversity like in the old days," Jim comments and Sophie watches Eliot glare at him before grudgingly nodding in agreement.

-

They've been on this particular con for two weeks now. Eliot and Parker have inserted themselves into Sylvia Weatherspoon's social circle as Charlie and Rebecca Moonstone, a couple made up of a generic cowboy and his wife, a woman who hasn't outright stated she is a practicing witch, but has made references to things like a thieving farmhand who now only has the ability to steal chickens because he no longer has thumbs while also wearing flowing clothing and crystal necklaces and well, Sylvia isn't an intellectual so she seemingly has ate this up.

However, today the con is about to get even weirder and she's even managed to get Jim to play along on this part, although he's less than thrilled when they all meet outside the barn that morning.

"I've picked out the right mare and gelding…" Eliot looks pointedly at Jim when he says the last word and the other man rolls his eyes and sighs.

"I can't believe you're still being so petty about myself and Ms. Devereaux's romantic entanglements."

"A stallion would be more hot-headed. Do you want somebody to get trampled during the light show?" Eliot growls back although Sophie suspects he was indeed being petty.

Still, in a few hours Sylvia will arrive at the stables just in time to see Charlie and Rebecca arguing with a Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Smith over a dog peeing on the tire of an expensive truck and things will get very weird.

-

"I trust your judgment on these kinds of things, but I don't think this is going to work," Jim mutters to Sophie as he adjusts his hat. He's dressed like a cowboy, but a rich one who clearly has stolen the aesthetic, and Sophie is wearing a casual yet expensive looking dress with a butterfly clip accessory in her hair.

"You saw the depth of the conspiracies that woman will believe," Sophie responds. "Just yesterday she shared something about unborn fetuses being turned into birds for factory farming purposes."

"Well, I suppose you can't change stupid," Jim mutters. "Still, I'll truly be shocked if she falls for this one."

-

They'd made sure to brush past Sylvia as they entered the barn, and Sophie had even dropped her purse as a way to ensure the other woman remembers them and now it's show time with what has to be one of the most audacious cons yet.

Sophie clicks the heels of her pink cowgirl boots for extra flair as she yells at Eliot, "Your stupid mutt of a dog ruined our tires!"

"Look, you can't expect to waltz in here with your strange new way of life and have everybody just act like it's normal! You don't deserve to have a truck if you think some dog being a dog is going to ruin it!"

Jim lunges at him before yelling, "That dog needs to be put down!"

Parker steps in between him and Eliot before growling, "That dog is our family! I think you two need to be put down!"

The next thing that happens is a glittering flash and a strange noise and this is Sophie and Jim's cue to run through the door of the tack room and to the outside of the barn meaning she can't see what happens next, but hours later she does find out.

-

"You know, when I ran over with Sylvia and saw the horses with the hat and the hair clip and the piles of torn clothes, I almost believed Parker really turned you two into horses for a second," Harry admits.

"Well, I have been practicing magic tricks, and I'm not afraid of horses anymore!" Parker beams.

"Babe, you can't turn your enemies into animals," Hardison quickly shuts her down.

"But the important, yet extremely disturbing thing is that now that Sylvia believes Rebecca Moonstone has the ability to turn her enemies into animals and learned that she loves the horse dancers she was too scared to kick Alana out of the barn," Harry adds, "So, it actually worked."
