“Tell me again what you said before I went on stage.”
He hesitated, recalling the way he’d spoken to her, knowing she wouldn’t be able to respond. He’d hoped she’d forgotten, the ritual clearing her mind as she’d always told him it did, but now he understood that wasn’t the case.
“Oh, I don’t remem—”
His words cut off when he was struck across the face with a gloved hand. He gaped at her in shock, but she just stared challengingly back at him.
