Work Text:
It was a usual Saturday morning. Well, for Lucy it was, but not for Kate. They were still cuddled up in bed after their usual morning heat. The blonde’s head spun around the thoughts of what big step she’d take today. She eventually got interrupted by her girlfriend tracing kisses down her bare shoulder and back.
Kate turned towards the brunette with sparkling eyes, smiling. When she looked into her eyes, she knew that the decision she made in her head was the right one. Lucy made her feel like someone again. After her world had been black and white her whole life, that woman brought color into it.
She pressed a soft kiss on the brunette’s lips. “Breakfast?” the small one suggested.
“Sure.”
They grabbed their clothes, heading into the kitchen.
While Lucy munched on her waffle, Kate gave her the “I wanna tell you something but I don’t want to say it out loud” look that her girl always noticed.
“What is it, my love?” The Texan took her hand reassuringly.
“Nothing bad, I promise. I just… kinda booked a catamaran for this evening. I know you’re not the biggest fan of the ocean, but that’s the closest to what I can get to your ‘I wanna feel like Ariel in that boat scene but much gayer’ comment.” Kate bit her lip, realizing she was already blurring out too much.
The brunette's mouth stood wide open. “What- I wasn’t serious about that- Kate-”
The blonde already panicked, wanting to cancel everything, when her girlfriend grabbed her face and shut her up before she could say anything.
“I love you. I love this. Thank you. Really. You always try to give me the whole world. And I have to admit… with you, nothing can be terrible.” A smirk formed on her face.
“Lucy Tara, are you trying to get me into bed a second time before 10 AM?!” Kate whispered into her ear.
“I just can’t help myself, you’re too damn fine. Especially when you’re being nerdy and plan something.” Kate grabbed her face, coming close. When Lucy wanted to lean in, she pulled back, chuckling. “The dishes aren’t going to clean themselves.”
“Kateeeee,” the small one groaned.
Kate laughed, standing up to grab the mugs from the counter. Lucy watched her move around their kitchen in nothing but an oversized t-shirt and shorts, hair messy, lips still swollen from their earlier kiss. Something about the sight tugged at her chest, this was their life, simple and beautiful in ways Lucy never thought she’d have.
She leaned back in her chair, crossing her arms with a pout. “Fine. But just so you know, I’m keeping a running tally of all the times you deny me kisses.”
Kate set the mugs down with a smirk. “Good. It’ll make them worth more when I give in.”
Lucy narrowed her eyes, but the blush on her cheeks betrayed her. “Evil.”
“And yet you love me.”
“I do,” Lucy said softly, the joking tone falling away in a heartbeat. “More than you know.”
Kate paused, set the mug down and moved back toward her girlfriend, sliding into her lap with ease.
Lucy grunted at the weight, automatically wrapping her arms around Kate’s waist. “See? This is where you belong.”
Kate kissed her nose, smiling. “You’re impossible.”
“And you’re stuck with me.”
It was late afternoon and the sky had already started to glow in different colors, when Kate helped Lucy onto the catamaran.
It wasn’t a bare boat, no. Kate had thought this through. Fairy lights, warm and glowing, hung along the sides like little stars waiting for night to fall. A soft blanket and cushions had been arranged at the bow, with a small basket tucked in the corner. Hyper-realistic electric candles were "burning" all around.
"This is… wow.” She spun once, her face catching the sea breeze, then leaned in close, grinning. “You decorating boats now in your free time? Should I be worried?”
Kate’s chest was already tight. She smiled, shaking her head. “No. Just wanted tonight to be special.”
Lucy took her hand, giving it a firm squeeze. “Every night with you is special, Kate. But… this? This is next level.”
They walked toward the front, their bare feet padding against the deck. Kate almost expected her to hesitate, like she always did with the ocean. But Lucy’s shoulders were loose, her posture steady.
The blond tilted her head. “You’re… not freaking out?”
The Texan looked at her, settling into the cushions with a grin. “After months stuck on a ship as Agent Afloat? Please. This is like a bathtub. I could do this in my sleep.”
Kate blinked, thrown off. “Oh. Well. That’s… good?”
Lucy smirked, pulling her down to sit beside her. “But if we sink you will need to be the one to rescue us tho..."
Kate chuckled. "I thought we agreed on that you're Jack and I'm Rose...?"
The small responded. "That's why I die at the end of the movie silly..."
"Right, right..." Her girlfriend couldn't hold back the laugh anymore.
They settled into a comfortable cuddle, admiring the sunset. The distant silhouette of Diamond Head perfectly framed in the evening light.
"Look!" the tall pointed to the glamorous mountain, offering Lucy a hand to get up.
"Wow..." The tiny one gasped and took her girlfriends hand while holding her close.
Kate’s voice was soft. “Lucy… there’s something I’ve been thinking about for a long time."
"Every day, every morning, every night… I imagine it with you. And it’s not just a daydream. It’s everything I want for the rest of my life.” She paused, letting the words settle in between them.
“You make me feel more than I thought possible. You make every fear, every shadow in my mind… lighter. My world was in black and white, before I saw your light. And I can’t… I can’t imagine a day without you. I don’t want to. So I’ve been holding onto this feeling, this certainty… and I realized the longer I wait, the more I know I need to tell you this.”
Lucy’s hand went to Kate’s cheek, thumbs brushing softly against her skin. “Kate…” Her voice trembled, caught between laughter and tears. “If-.”
Kate’s eyes shined as she dropped onto one knee, opening a red velvet box she just got out of her pocket. “I love you. I love you more than I’ve ever loved anyone. And I want to share my life with you, every part of it. I want to laugh with you, cry with you, fight and make up with you… I want all of it. And I can’t keep imagining forever in my head without… without asking if we can make that forever real. Lucy… I want to spend my life proving to you that you’re the center of mine.”
Lucy’s chest tightened, tears forming at the corners of her eyes. She leaned into Kate’s hand, letting herself feel the full weight of the moment.
The blonde took her hand. “Lucy Tara, will you make me the happiest person alive and marry me?”
Lucy’s heart skipped a beat, tears falling freely as she nodded, pressing her forehead against Kate’s. “Yes… yes, yes, goddamn YES.”
Kate slipped the ring onto Lucy’s finger, their hands intertwining as they held each other close. Their lips met and the ocean gained about what felt like 1 liter of water.
They laid down again, wrapped in each other’s arms, the world outside paused around them.
Lucy leaned back slightly, resting her head on Kate’s shoulder, letting the moment sink in. “I can’t… I can’t believe this is real,” she murmured. “You… me… here. Us. Everything feels… perfect.”
Kate pressed a kiss to the top of Lucy’s head, closing her eyes. “It is perfect,” she whispered. “Because it’s us. All of it. And it always will be.”
As the sky deepened to dusky pinks and purples, Kate brushed a hand along Lucy’s back, tracing soft patterns. “I wanted tonight to be unforgettable, and you… you’ve made it perfect just by being here, by being you.”
Lucy tilted her head, looking up with a grin through tear-glimmered eyes. “I think we just reached a new level of perfect. And honestly? I feel unstoppable with you. Like… if anything in the world tried to get between us, I’d punch it in the face. Or at least stare at it until it moved on.”
Kate laughed, letting herself relax fully for the first time since she’d started planning this. “Good. Because you’ll need that confidence for the rest of our lives together.”
Lucy leaned in again, lips brushing Kate’s in a gentle kiss. “I think I’m ready,” she said softly, “for all of it. Every adventure. Every sunrise and sunset. Every ridiculous, amazing, quiet, loud, chaotic, beautiful moment… with you.”
Kate’s heart thudded as she held her close. “Me too,” she said, letting herself melt into the warmth of Lucy. “All of it. Forever.”
