I want my Sweet Candy!
They had been shopping, all of them, Rex and the kids that is.
The idea of buying new clothes for school and some supplies too. And afterwards to take them all for dinner. That having been the goal. The plan.
Of course there were other treats promised as well if the kids would behave.
Candy, among them but of course.
As which kid doesn’t love those tooth rotting sugary treats! Eating enough of them and you’re in a coma for the rest of the day or worse case scenario, a full week!
Hardcase, the most notorious candy love of the lot of them had had this particular portion of their outing top most on his kids brain, of course he had.
Candy, the ultimate treat! Nothing could it beat!
Hardcase having been repeating the magical word since the lot of them had stepped into the shuttle taking the adults and kids alike to the nearest town for the shopping and eating and whatever else there was they needed to do.
“Candy!”
“Yes Casey, you’ll be getting some after the shopping is done and we’ve eaten some food.” Rex had promised.
The face not just on Hardcase, but everyone else, lit up at the mere thought of it.
CANDY!
But it did not take long for the hyperactive kid to forget the fact, the timing of the candy and Hardcase keeping on asking of the delivery of the promised treat constantly, much to Rex’s annoyance.
Right after shoe shopping too!
“When can we have candy?”
After the clothes store.
“So when is candy?”
After the props market.
“Rex? Candy? Now?”
“Casey,” Rex took the kid aside while the others where deep in admiration of all the new stuff they were getting. “Remember, we talked about this before.”
“But… Candy?” The wide eyed stare Rex got from Hardcase was… heart melting.
“Yes you will get candy. But later, okay?”
Hardcase lips started shaking, the tears following suit. Either by design or then for real, Rex not always able to tell.
Rex melting seeing the kid so upset though, so guess it was working. And so, digging deep into his pocket Rex dug up a small lolly.
“Here! But don’t tell the others and Hardcase…”
Rex had the kids full attention now, large eyes on him and yes… the candy there too.
“Promise me this won’t spoil your appetite for real food.”
Hardcase nodded eagerly accepting the offering and taking a lick while keeping the treat under wraps from the rest of them. After all, it was special and Hardcase certainly felt special too.
As it turned out, Hardcase took only a few licks before putting the wrapping back on.
Finally, the dinner was eaten and more candy was offered to all the kids on their way home.
Heaven having descended upon the kids for sure!
They all fell asleep happily when back home.
The lolly now placed by the bedside table, a special treat it had been for the kid, Hardcase certainly thinking so. Hence, saving it for a time later.
Rex, while having come to check on the kids just after lights out could not help but smile. The special little kid Hardcase certainly was, was getting a ruffle on his curly hair from Rex. The father figure feeling very proud of the special little boy.
