Flufftober Day 2: Pet-Sitting

Work Text:

Wagging his tail, Bond trotted alongside Yor. Anya and Loid had been out all day, so Yor would be looking after him today. He liked her very much; she always smelled so good.
The weather was beautiful. The sun was shining brightly and the wind was blowing nicely, carrying the smell of the Hotdog stand right in Bond's direction. If he could just find a good place to do his business, everything would be perfect.
Yor led him through the park, his favorite walking route. That's why he preferred walking with her; with her, there was no danger of being called into a dangerous situation, as was sometimes the case with Loid. Although Yor's side job also made his hair stand on end when he thought about it. But he didn't do that often.
Bond loved Yor very much, just like he did Loid, but he loved Anya the most. Without her, he would still be in that awful place. He wouldn't be part of a family, his wonderful family. He would do anything for her, protect her from all dangers and anything that could harm her.
Above all, Yor's home-cooked meals.

The vision struck Bond like a brick.
Anya standing in front of a plate of dangerously steaming food, and then Anya and Loid lying on the floor, squirming in pain. He had to prevent this at all costs. After doing his business, Bond decided. He had to stop Yor from cooking, but how?
“Come on, shall we go home?”
Bond barked in agreement and trotted alongside Yor, racking his brains for something he could do to protect Anya from the meal.
Before he knew it, they were almost home, but he still had no plan. Bond panicked, the vision of the future still fresh in his mind. He had to do something, and fast. But what?

The answer came to him with a gust of wind. His nose twitched, he turned around abruptly, and a smile spread across his face. There was the answer to his problem: sausages.
Overjoyed, he wagged his tail. That was it. He had to persuade Yor to buy sausages for dinner, then everything would be fine.
They were standing at a traffic light, and the sausage stand was very close by. This was his chance.
He nudged Yor's leg with his nose and excitedly lifted one of his paws up and down.

“Oh,” Yor smiled at him, “You can smell the sausages from the man back there.” Bond barked in agreement, wagging his tail excitedly.
Yor understood him, now they would buy the sausages and Anya would be saved. Bond was so proud of himself.
“I'm sorry, Bond, but Loid says you can't eat too much of them.”
The traffic light turned green and they continued on their way. He had failed and his mission had been unsuccessful.
With his head hanging low, he walked home with Yor.

Once there, Bond feverishly considered what he could do to save Anya and Loid from the impending danger. To do so, he had to bring out the big guns, so he lay down in his bed, striking the thinking pose.
He lay on his back in his bed, paws on his stomach, head hanging down to the floor. This allowed him to think and at the same time keep an eye on Yor and what she was doing in the kitchen.
“Now,” there was a loud clatter and Bond heard the water being turned on. “Put the pasta water on, wait until it boils, then add salt,” Yor said to herself, and an idea flashed through Bond’s mind.
But he shook his head vigorously. He couldn’t do that, you just don’t do things like that.
“Hmm, what else do I need? Oh, yes, that's right.” There was another brief clatter, and Bond could smell that Yor was carelessly throwing various spices into a pot.
Beads of sweat ran down his furry cheeks. He had to do it, but he couldn't. Anya's face came to mind, his dear sweet Anya.
“Now I have to cook the meat.”
He had to do it, for Anya!

A strangely nasty smell came from the pot behind Yor. She had gotten the goulash recipe from one of her coworkers and wanted to try it out today.
She thought the sauce was coming along nicely; all that was missing was the meat, which she had just taken out of the refrigerator. She turned toward the stove when she suddenly stumbled.
“Bond, watch out, I'm cooking,” she warned the big dog, who suddenly stood next to her and looked at her unhappily. She had just managed to keep the tray in her hands from falling as Bond continued to fuss around her.
“What's wrong with you today?” Yor asked, losing her balance when Bond jumped up at her. Bond took advantage of the few seconds it took her to regain her balance and snatched the meat from the plate. “Bond, no, bad dog!”
The dog flinched as if someone had pointed a gun at him and whimpered distressed. “Come on, that's not like you. Ow, the meat,” she said, bent down to throw away the ruined meat that Bond was no longer interested in.
Yor had imagined the evening differently. Since Loid was at the dentist with Anya, she wanted to take over his work and make Anya a nice dinner, but unfortunately that wasn't going to happen now. She sighed sadly.

After cleaning up the mess, she looked at Bond, who was sitting in the corner of the kitchen like a sad little bundle of misery. She could see that he was ashamed of his previous actions, and she felt sorry for him as he sat there slumped over and sad.
“Bond, you don't do things like that, understand?” she said reprimandingly, pointing her finger at him and kneeling down in front of him. “No treats for a week.” The dog lowered his head in understanding and gave an approving whimper.
Yor smiled and petted him on the head, “Good, and in the future—”
She didn't get any further, because suddenly there was a loud hissing and whistling sound behind her.
“Oh no, the sauce!”

She frantically ran to the stove and turned down the heat, but it was too late. The sauce had turned into an unidentifiable black mush and was completely burnt to the bottom of the pot.
“What am I going to do? They'll be here any minute,” she said desperately, clutching her cheeks and thinking about what she could do now. But before she could panic any further, she felt something on her leg and looked down. Bond was there, holding something in his mouth.
“Pre-made sauce?” she read the packaging and took it from Bond, who sniffed encouragingly and wagged his tail. She read through the cooking instructions. “That should be quick,” she murmured. “But then there's still something missing,” her gaze briefly rested on Bond, who was still looking at her happily, wagging his tail.
“Of course!” she clapped her hands, “You're a genius, Bond!”

“We're back home, Yor.”
“Anya's teeth are great, just a little bit of tooth decay.”
Kicking off her shoes, Anya rushed into the apartment, followed by Loid. “From now on, you'd better brush your teeth,” said Loid, who neatly put Anya's shoes back in their place.
“Oh, what smells so yummy?” asked Anya as she entered the living room and sniffed around.
“Welcome home, you two,” Yor greeted them. “Dinner is already on the table.”
“Oh, you cooked?” Loid asked, surprised. “Yes, I actually wanted to make goulash, but,” Yor shyly lifted the lid of the pot, “then I improvised a bit.”
Loid looked into the pot and inhaled the aroma. “That smells delicious, Yor,” he said with a smile. “I’m glad to hear that,” said Yor, breathing a sigh of relief.
“Anya wants to see the yummy food too!” The girl quickly climbed onto a chair and peeked into the pot. “Oh, those are little pieces of sausage!” she exclaimed excitedly.
“Yes, Bond gave me the idea for the sausage goulash,” Yor said with a laugh, serving everyone a plate of pasta.
“Well then, let's not allow the food to get cold.”
“Yes, Papa!”

Satisfied, Bond looked at his family from his bed. He had successfully prevented the food poisoning. Even though it pained him to have to behave like a “bad dog,” it was the only way. It was the only way he could save Anya and Loid.
His mission had been a complete success, and now he needed a nap. Looking after his family was really hard work.
