Summary
The more Steve had thought about it though, the more he’d realized that this was the one time missing something might actually have longstanding repercussions for his relationships with both of them. And, well, Steve couldn’t bear the thought of losing Sam any more than he already was, so he’d shown up. He’d worn his best suit, pasted as serene a smile as he could muster on his face, took the seat one of Sam’s many cousins directed him to, and watched his oldest friend marry his once closest friend.
Or: Sam and Bucky are getting married, and Steve is going through it.

Steve couldn’t bear the thought of losing Sam any more than he already was, so he’d shown up. He’d worn his best suit, pasted as serene a smile as he could muster on his face, took the seat one of Sam’s many cousins directed him to, and watched his oldest friend marry his once closest friend.
“Seriously,” he pressed, when he didn't immediately get an answer. “Why are you out here right now, Sam?”
“Why are you?” Sam shot back, shooting up to his full height, back suddenly ramrod straight.
Gone was the benevolent smile that had graced his face just a few moments ago, and that same fire and intensity Steve had always both feared and craved in equal measures was suddenly lighting up Sam’s eyes.
“Seriously,” Sam mocked. “Why would you show up now, looking like,” he broke off abruptly, shaking his head, before continuing, tone much softer now, “looking like you actually care.”
“I’ve always cared,” Steve said, looking offended, as he stood up and took a step in Sam’s direction. “Always.”
Sam scoffed. “More like when it’s convenient for you.”
Steve almost rolled his eyes at that. “It’s never been convenient,” he countered, voice just this shy of bitter. “Nothing about the way I feel about you — nothing about the way I’ve ever felt about you, has ever been anything close to convenient, Sam, least of all now.”
“Yeah, right. You—
“I love you. I’m in love with you,” he stressed, even though he knew there was something extremely fucked up about this being the first time he managed to let those words escape his lips, here, now. But, he couldn’t help himself, especially not when Sam was standing there wearing his doubt on his face and his disbelief on his sleeve. Sam could think a lot of things about him, including that he was a shitty friend, but he could never think that Steve didn’t love him — didn't want him. Steve couldn’t bear that.
