The art of hating (whilst loving)

Summary:

“So, are you going to tell me how you accidentally burned yourself with a hair straightener?” Sugawara asked, trying to hide the smugness and obvious mocking on his voice but totally failing which earned another groan from Semi.

“It just happened, that’s the end of it.” He spoke shortly, trying to keep this topic short and simply. Their conversation ended right there, as Eita stepped away to go into his own classroom, leaving the grey haired to go to his own class. But Eita could tell his friend didn’t quite believe him; which was honestly fair because burning marks don’t usually turn purple.. Nor are they common to happen right under this jaw. He didn't have hair that long. "

or:: a short fic with the best moments between Semi and Shirabu who thought were slick but are just stupid. And oh, Sugawara and Taichi are done with them.

Notes:

HIhi!!

I hope you enjoy this! I tried to make it fun whilst including some fake hating and secret dating but they're just needy idiots. Looking forward to your feedback <3

Work Text:

Chuckles erupted through the classroom as Shirabu walked in, backpack slung over his shoulder. At first he thought of nothing (after all, his classmates always found everything funny) but he soon frowned some as he sat down on his usual spot next to Taichi and saw his smug expression. “Why are you looking at me like that?” The cropper haired boy asked, still frowning and now a glare. Taichi was always looking for reasons to piss him off.

The ginger only hummed, shrugging and looking straightforward now, at the teacher who was walking inside the classroom, hands holding a stack of paper. “Nothing. Just be more careful with bug bites.” He ended up saying just as the teacher started to talk. It made Shirabu confused for a second before it clicked on his mind and he tried to pull the collar of his shirt up. Right.. that wasn't supposed to be there. He cursed himself for letting that happen and he supposes that he now needs to find an excuse for it.

But he couldn't be distracted much more as the teacher called his name to go upfront ― he thought he was in trouble but then he remembered today was the delivery of the tests they had done the week before. Confidently he got up to retrieve the paper, his expression quickly turning smug as he saw the score. 98%, it said, an almost perfect score. It took one quick look in the direction of his ash-blonde classmate to know that he had surpassed him. Oh, how that felt so good to see the frowning expression on his rival's face.

He only approached the other at the end of the class, crossing his arms with the paper on his hands. “What did you get?” He asked easily. For any outsiders it could come off as Shirabu just genuinely being curious and wanting to know what he had gotten on the test; but of course that wasn’t the case. Semi knew better. He knew the other’s little mannerism and could tell he was just asking because he knew Semi had gotten a lower score than him. (He could tell due to the small dimple forming on Shirabu’s mouth.)

He sighed before simply muttering “Ninety-seven..”, paper turned over. He could practically hear the pride dripping from his words and he wasn’t looking at Shirabu yet. But he forced himself to look up, raising an eyebrow as he was met with hazel eyes after he placed his own test on top of Semi’s, showing the same red mark but instead with a, barley, higher score.

“Maybe that’s why you’re repeating a year.” He shrugged with that remark. He knew Eita wasn’t repeating it but that doesn’t mean he can’t have a bit of fun and try to piss him off. After all, they always bickered and teased each other with mean words but nothing ever that serious that could actually hurt someone’s feelings. It was their own little thing, even though they’d never admit how much they actually could care about the other.

“I took a year off and you know it.” He huffed, defensive, glare heavy as he stared at Shirabu, both stuck in a staring contest that only mattered for the two. And his glare only intensified when the others didn’t even bulge and if anything only got more smug.

“Do I?” The brunette hummed, voice like honey, dripping with smugness, a smirk resting on his rosy lips that drove Semi absolutely crazy. “I don’t know, Semi-san. You don’t seem all that smart.” The younger gave a small shrug, tilting his head to the side, bangs falling over his hazel eyes. The action could’ve been considered cute or even adorable if it wasn’t for the glare now present in his eyes.

Eita scoffed yet again, being the first to break eye contact to roll his eyes, looking away now. Anywhere but that annoyingly pretty face. “It’s a single point! It doesn’t even matter that much.” He defended, frowning when the other didn’t bulge the victorious expression.

“Still above you.”

“I’m going to wipe that smug look off your face, Shira.”

“It’s Shirabu.” It was Semi’s turn to smirk now, knowing all too well how easy to get under his skin. He knew him far too well, and understood to which point he could push the younger man. Maybe that’s why he was so focused on this little competition between him and Kenjiro. A *silent* competition that drove both of them to reach their full potential but also brought up the most creative insults they could think of. Really, Semi could possibly do a list of stupid but creative nicknames that Shirabu has called him over the school year and every time it happens, the ash-blonde is always surprised with a new one. Which was only fair, given the numerous versions of Shirabu’s name that he has made.

No one really understood their relationship. They never seem to actually fight each other, even when their hang outs were full of remarks and banter. And no one ever saw them alone either to actually dictate what is happening between the two. Besides and only adding to the people’s suspicions, they both have left really clear how much they hated each other. After all, every time they parted ways for the day it was with a simple ‘I hate you’.

“I hate you.” Shirabu breathed heavily, head thrown back against the wall. Breath ragged, brown eyes shut tight. His hand tangled into the soft locks, gripping tight and pulling the person’s head closer to his neck, red-bitten lips forming into a smirk after hearing the quiet moan. His legs were wrapped tight around the other’s waist, both grinding their hips in a slow movement, trying to push the other to edginess first. But his cocky smile didn’t last long, now replaced with his mouth hanging open in a silent scream, a whine escaping his lips. Teeth sinked onto his skin, just enough to feel good and leave a mark behind, one that was meticulously placed right on the side of his neck. “Idiot..”

“You always say that, bunny.” He heard a rough voice to his ear, feeling a grip tighten on his hips to keep him in place. “And yet, always end up like this.” He groaned when his lips were caught in a bruising kiss, needy hands all over each other. The older male pressed harder against him, letting out a groan of his own as his hair was tugged by the younger, only fueling more his need for the other.

As they were walking through the campus, Sugawara slung his arm over Semi’s shoulders, a vivid grin on his face, a mischievous look in his direction. Despite them not being in the same year, it seems like Sugawara always knew where he was. “So a bird told me you have a date this weekend?” He asked, wiggling his eyebrows at the ash-blonde, his voice teasing and loud enough to make Semi grimace when the sound rang in his ears. But he nodded nonetheless, shrugging Sugawa’s arm off him, making the gray-headed man chuckle some. “So who is it? Is it a girl from your year? Ooooh, is it that guy that asked you out the other time? Or is it-”

A huffed laughter interrupted his sentence, making both men look over its source. “I’m surprised someone would ask you out, Semi-san.” Shirabu’s voice cut through, Eita’s eyes rolling at it but only making the younger one more smug. Oh, how he loved making his elders annoyed. It was like a reward. “Who’s the poor soul?”

“I’m not telling you.” Semi shook his head, sending an accusatory look to Sugawara specifically. “Especially you and your big mouth.” He chuckled, earning a small pout from the mentioned man.

It’s not like Eita didn’t trust Koushi, because he did. A lot. But this was rather a delicate situation that he wanted to keep it to himself for a little longer. Like a secret he just wasn’t ready to tell yet ― not ashamed as it was quite the opposite. More like something he cherished far too much to share with the rest of the world just in case someone might try snatching it away from them.

And then his thoughts were interrupted yet again by Shirabu’s voice. “What I’m hearing is,” He started, making Semi look his way but he didn’t look back. “He doesn't want to say because there’s no one.” And with that, he shrugged, feeling Semi roll his eyes even without looking at him.

“Maybe you’re just jealous, Bu.” He hummed back, lips curling into a grin when the other’s reaction was to look back at him with a frown and a small glare. “You know, it’d do you some good to go on a date someday.” He added, shrugging some and putting his hands up in the air like a defensive motion to when the brunette’s glare darkened. “I’m just saying! You always sound like you have a stick up your ass.” He laughed, dodging the jab that came from the younger.

The latter groaned, looking huffy. “You’re so annoying, Semi.” He grumbled, staying pouty and frowning as he’d always when Semi was mocking him like this. Though he’d never actually be upset with Semi doing it ― other people can’t! Semi just simply has a way to make it work without the verbal jab being hurtful and more like making it fun.

And just like that, both fall into a comfortable bickering, completely immersing themselves in their own little whole. All this meanwhile Sugawara never left their side, rather finding this whole thing entertaining. With a mischievous smile, he kept this for himself and just decided to observe.

“So a date, huh?” He breathed between kisses, eliciting a chuckle from Semi, lips dancing in sync, hands holding each other close like a lifeline. Too afraid to let go yet. Their bodies fit perfectly, like they were molded into staying this close. His hand, just big enough to cup the younger’s jaw, skin tingling with the feeling of him.

He huffed into the kiss, feeling the plump lips trail down his neck, a sensation that Semi loves, one that makes his skin burn with the craving for more of it. “Was supposed to be a surprise.” The sentence turned into a sigh at the end, eyes falling shut to memorize more of the soft touches and ghost-like kisses.

He felt vibrations on his skin from where the other hummed against his neck before the other’s voice was heard, slightly muffled, “Such a sap, Ei.” He teased quietly that was quickly cut off by Semi’s hand tangling on the strands of his hair and pulling his head back, taking him into a bruising kiss again.

“Mhmm, you’re going to drill holes in her head if you keep glaring.” He heard the person speak next to him but he didn’t flinch or move, eyes stuck on the brunette girl.

Shirabu huffed, scoffing, “I’m not glaring.” He defended, arms crossed over his chest and sulking a bit more into his chair. He wasn’t staring, obviously not! This annoying, giggling girl just happened to be in his line of sight, that’s all. Who also happened to be attempting to flirt with Semi, a hand on his arm and giggling exaggeratedly at something he said. ‘I bet it wasn’t even that funny.’ He thought to himself.

But the staring didn’t take much because the moment he stopped glaring daggers at the poor girl and looked at the ash-blonde, he was already looking right back at Shirabu with a smug smirk on his lips, too full of himself. Kenjiro glared, though a little lighter, locking eyes for a moment longer before he looked away and focused back on his book.

“So, not glaring, huh?”

“Shut up, Taichi.”

“- and that’s what happened this weekend.” The girl finished with a satisfied smile, blinking when she noticed that Semi’s gaze seemed to be far away and not quite on her. “Hey, are you listening?”

“Huh?” He blurred out, expression falling and looking down at her. “No, yeah of course.” He cleared his throat despite him not retaining anything she spoke. What were they even talking about? “Very cool but I have to go now, sorry.” He spoke quickly, already making his way away from her, leaving the poor girl confused.

He, in fact, didn’t pay any attention to her.

“We’re gonna get caug-” The words died out immediately turning into a groan as teeth sinked onto the side of his neck. And without giving him any warning, he felt lips trail up and leave another mark under his jaw. He hissed, grabbing on the brunette locks. “Geez bunny, trying to eat me?”

“Shut up.” Shirabu breathed, hands gilding up and into the other’s shirt, feeling the goosebumps on his skin from where the other shivered due to the coldness of his hands. But after the rough start, Kenjiro’s kisses died to be more soft, littering them around his neck and trailing up to his lips. The kiss was deep and full of emotions, wordless words that both knew but never spoke.

He felt hands cup his cheeks, bringing him closer as always, quiet whispers between them. “We have classes..” He hummed quietly into the other’s lips. But despite saying that, he never really pulled away from Shirabu, biting on his bottom lip teasingly and smirking when he felt his gasp. “Meet me tonight at our place."

What made him curious though, was that Eita wasn't trying to hide the mark like Shirabu was ― Taichi had told him about it and how fast he was to cover it up. They were done with their bickering but it was amusing nonetheless. They could practically feel the tension build between them even if the other two would deny it. “We have nothing in common.” They'd say yet Koushi knew about their matching purple marks. And like any good friend, he made a mental note for Taichi later.

“Eita?”

Both froze upon hearing Koushi’s voice echo through the otherwise empty bathroom. It was quite late at night, the school was empty as everyone seemed to be in their dorms at this hour. Eita groaned lightly and dropped his head onto a shoulder, “Here!” He tried to keep his voice steady, but the way his voice seemed breathier was hard to control. “I’ll.. be out in a second! Wait for me outside-”

“Fine, but you better hurry up, you idiot!” With that, they heard footsteps walking away and the bathroom door close behind.

The moment they knew they were alone, Semi looked up to meet hazel eyes, both eyes lustful and in need for the other but equally smug and teasing. The staring contest lasted a bit longer before they chuckled quietly, leaning their foreheads together. “I’ll make it up to you this weekend, ‘kay?” He whispered, kissing him for a moment longer before stepping out of the small stall to meet his friend outside. Completely ignoring the latter’s questioning look about how messy his hair was and why his lips were red and bitten.

“You’re not even that funny, Kenjiro.” The ash-blonde huffed, taking a sip from his can of red bull before glancing around the table. “What?” He asked with a frown as everyone else ― everyone else being Taichi and Koushi ―  stared at him with questioning looks.

“Kenjiro?” The ginger repeated the name, looking between the ash-blonde and the owner of the name. “Since when do you let him treat you by your first name?” He questioned, looking at said boy who just shrugged.

“I didn’t but he’s annoying.” He replied easily, looking at Semi for a moment too long before looking away and getting up. “Anyways, I’ll be right back.” Shirabu said simply, walking away and towards the cafeteria’s bathroom.

The cafeteria was mostly empty, as they were having more of a later lunch than usual. According to Koushi’s, it’s Eita’s fault for taking too long in making sure his eyeliner was perfect before lunch. ‘Excuse a guy for having fashion!’ Semi had defended.

“Alright.” Said ash-blonde got up, “Uhm, I need to run to the bathroom.” He said as a quick excuse, leaving the table before the others could even ask.

As soon as he was out of hearing range, Taichi stood his hand out, eyes locked on the ash-blonde figure leaving. “Told you they wouldn’t last that long.” He hummed smugly as Sugawara placed money on his hand with a groan.

“And during lunch!” He huffed, sulking his chair with a huffy pout. A moment of silence passed before he spoke again. “.. Wanna bet who returns with more marks?”

“You’re on.”

“I told you to stop biting so much!” The brunette huffed, a little, cute scowl on his face as he tried to hide the purple marks littered around his collar. “Goddamnit, Ei.” He grumbled but the cute, rosy blush dancing on his light freckle cheeks spoke otherwise.

The ash-blond chuckles, wrapping his arms around his waist from behind and placing his chin on his shoulder, pressing a small peck on his cheek. “You’re just so tasty, bunny.” He hummed, earning a roll of eyes and a light jab to his side. “Let them see.” He shrugged simply enjoying the little huffs of protest from the other.

“Whatever, you idiot.” He scoffed out but it was fond, a light smile on his rosy lips, Earning a kiss to the dimple on his mouth.

“I love you, Kenjiro.” He whispered into his skin, a promise and a confession.

“...I love you too, Eita.” He muttered quietly, just as loving.

"Awh, I knew you were soft for me!" He teased gently, hugging him tight and chuckling with the litght jabs of Shirabu.

"Oh, shut it, Eita!"
