The screen door squeaks like a startled cuckoo dove as Kyle opens it, revealing Andy bouncing on her toes, cheeks flushed pink from Seattle's misty chill. She barrels into him before he can speak, her embrace fierce enough to make his ribs protest.
"You're the best! Did you know that?" she blurts, her voice bright and quick as sunlight on chrome.
Kyle blinks, catching her momentum. "Guess I do now," he murmurs, a faint smile softening his features. He gently extracts himself. "What’s this for?"
"This!" Andy whirls, her canvas tote bag stuffed with leafy kale and fat carrots, bumping against her hip—clearly a haul from the Pike Place farmer’s market. She spots Jessie hovering near the stairs, eyes wide. Before Jessie can react, Andy pulls her into a brisk, decisive hug.
"I don't really know you, but..." Andy releases her just as fast. "Anyway, you were just *there* when I needed a hug after my oncology appointment."
Her gaze lands on Declan, leaning silently against the doorframe. "Don't know you either," Andy states plainly, wrapping her arms around his waist.
Declan’s startled chuckle rumbles low in his chest. He pats her back, his eyes locking with Kyle’s over her shoulder. "That's okay," he assures her, warmth in his tone. "Hugs are good."
Josh shoulders through the doorway, crunching a pretzel snatched from the kitchen bowl. "What's all the loving for?" he asks, spraying crumbs, his grin crooked and confused. Andy beams, radiant with news she hasn't even spoken yet.
Andy just laughs, pulling him into a hug and kissing his cheek. "I was gonna text, but it's too impersonal. Then I was going to call, but again, it's digital. This is a strictly analog moment that should be shared with real-time hugs and gushy feelings." She beams, her face radiant. "My test results came back. I'm officially in remission!"
The living room erupts. The sound is a shockwave of happiness—a mix of cheers, whoops, and a collective rush to embrace Andy. Josh forgets his pretzels, Lori lets out a genuine, uncool squeal, and even the adults, Stephen and Nicole, are pulled into the celebratory scrum. Kyle stands for a moment, absorbing the cacophony. He feels the vibrations of the room, the collective surge of relief and elation. The emotion is a bright, clear chord humming through the air, and he can't help but feel it resonate deep inside him. It’s like the hum of a well-oiled machine, everything working in perfect harmony.
He feels a hand slip into his, and he looks down. Declan’s fingers are laced with his, warm and strong. Declan's presence is a quiet anchor in the joyful storm. The hand-holding isn’t a grand gesture; it’s just there, a constant, reassuring weight that grounds Kyle. While everyone else swirls around Andy, they stay put, a small island of calm.
“That’s… really good,” Kyle says, finding his voice again. He doesn’t need to say more. His face is all the emotion he needs to convey.
“Yeah,” Declan agrees, his thumb stroking the back of Kyle’s hand. He leans in, his breath a gentle warmth on Kyle’s ear. “It’s about time she got some good news, huh?” His voice is low, meant just for Kyle.
The celebration continues around them for several more minutes before finally beginning to ebb. Josh and Andy are now giggling over an inside joke on the couch, Lori is talking quietly to Jessie, and Stephen and Nicole are just watching, their faces still wet with happy tears. The room settles into a comfortable, easy quiet, the kind that only happens when people who love each other are together.
Declan’s hand shifts from Kyle’s to slip around his waist, pulling him closer. Kyle leans into the touch, his head resting against Declan’s shoulder. The fabric of Declan's hoodie is soft against his cheek, and he can feel the steady rhythm of Declan's heart beating beneath the surface, a sound that is as familiar as his own name. It's a low, deep thrum, a vibration that speaks of strength and comfort. He closes his eyes for a second, just listening. The scent of Declan—a mix of cold Seattle air and his athletic musk—is a scent that Kyle finds calming.
He feels Declan’s lips press a soft, quick kiss to the top of his head. "You okay?" Declan asks, the question a whisper of concern.
"Yeah," Kyle murmurs, a quiet sense of contentment settling over him. "I'm good." He shifts his head to press his cheek against Declan’s arm. "You're warm."
"It's a gift," Declan says, his voice dry, but Kyle can hear the smile in it.
The silence that follows isn’t empty or awkward. It’s full. Full of quiet understanding, of shared relief for their friends, and of the unspoken love that exists between them. In the midst of everyone else’s joy, they have found their own small, perfect moment. They don’t need to speak, or to move, or to do anything at all. Just existing side-by-side, in the comfortable, quiet spaces between the noise, is more than enough.
