Chapter 1: Chapter 1 - The Letters

Chapter Text

Wallace Mikuri.
I’m writing to you because we have a pen pal program at school. I got you. My teacher says you are Juan’s apprentice. Write back if you’d like to become my friend.
Stephanie Stone.

Wallace Mikuri.
Thank you for your response. Whatever ‘arhksrrndfu’ means, I’m sure it is an adequate Sootopolan greeting. Is it true that you live in a giant crater? If so, what’s the crater formed from? Send pictures.
Stephanie Stone.

Wallace Mikuri.
Greetings. As requested, I have attached a photo of Metang to this letter. Thank you for your pictures of Sootopolis. I shall visit soon. I would like to meet you. What is Juan teaching you? Dad is always talking about business, rocks and technology. I only listen when he’s talking about rocks.
Stephanie Stone.

Dear Wallace Mikuri,
It was great to meet you! I know we exchanged phone numbers, but I’ve always liked old-fashioned letters, and I’ve heard Sootopolis can’t receive phone signals very well, so I’ll stick to this. Sootopolis was beautiful! Did I mention that I love the house architecture? You are very nice, and Juan is very polite. You should visit me in Rustboro at some point! Mom will love you!
From Stephanie Stone.
P.S. You should bring Feebas along! She’s so pretty!

Wallace Mikuri.
I apologise, but I will have to postpone our meeting due to my mother’s abrupt and unexpected passing. Juan is invited to her funeral, so perhaps I’ll see you there. Again, my apologies.
Stephanie Stone.
P.S. If you’re going to send flowers, Mom liked daffodils. Nevermind.

Wallace Mikuri,
Thank you for attending my Mom’s funeral. It helped having you there, since I don’t have any other friends. The kids at school bully me for being ‘retarded’. Maybe they just don’t understand rocks. Or they don’t like me in general. I wish you could attend my school. I hate it here. Now that Mom’s dead, Dad doesn’t want to talk to me anymore. Kenneth says it’s because I look like her. Sometimes I wish I were a boy. Not because I hate being a girl, or anything, but more because I feel like I fit in better with boys. Some kids call me a pick-me, but I don’t know what that means. I tried to play soccer on the boys' team, but the teacher wouldn’t let me. She said that I was being silly and that I was a girl. I asked her why girls couldn’t play soccer with boys, and she said it was because boys were stronger. That’s rubbish, in my opinion. I hope things are better with you.
Steph Stone.

Dear Wallace Mikuri,
Thank you for your letter. I was not aware of the existence of transgender people. Dad seemed a little confused when I mentioned it. He said we could look into puberty blockers, and that I wouldn’t have to go through puberty until I was sure of how I felt. I’m grateful to him for his understanding. I don’t know if I really am a boy- I’ve been raised as a girl all my life, after all. Could you ask the transgender lady in your town if she has any advice for me?
In other news, I got glasses. Contact lenses feel weird in my eyes, so I’ve decided to stick with glasses for now. I’ve also decided I’m going to challenge the gym leader here in Rustboro. Wish me luck!
Steph Stone.

Dear Wallace,
Thank you and Elizabeth for your letters. Please inform her that I am very grateful for her advice. I have decided to go by ‘Steven’ rather than ‘Stephanie’ for now. Dad is supportive; he says he’s proud of me, whether I’m his son or daughter. I can’t wait to see you! He’s perked up a bit since Mom’s death.
Steven Stone.
P.S. That felt so good to write!!! :DD

Dear Wallace,
!!! Metang evolved into Metagross!!! Attached is a photo! Anyway, I heard you’re going into Pokemon Contests. Cool! I’ll watch all of your shows and cheer for you! Did you know some Pokemon only evolve when they win contests? Feebas is one of them. In other news, I’ve started using Steven as my name at school. The kids are bullying me more, but I’m used to it now. Some of the teachers have been mean, though, which hurts just a little. I’m still not allowed on the boys’ soccer team.
Steven Stone.
P.S. Thank you to Elizabeth for the little flags! So cute!

Dear Wallace,
Great job on winning the beauty contest! You and Feebas were so pretty! I’ve won two gym badges now: one in Rustboro and one in Dewford. I caught an Aron in Granite Cave, and he’s joined the team. I’m sending a photo of Metagross and Aron together. Are you doing a contest in Verdanturf? Since it’s just through the tunnel past Rustboro, I’d be able to see you perform in person! I want to see you again…
Steven Stone.

Dear Wallace,
Since we got to catch up in person in Verdanturf after your contest, I haven’t written to you in a while. I just got my fifth gym badge: Rustboro, Dewford, Petalburg, Lavaridge and now Mauville! Wattson was tough, but Metagross learned Earthquake just in time to beat his Manectric. Where’s your next contest? I’m heading to Fortree, so if you’re doing the one in Lilycove next month, we’ll be able to meet up again!
Your best friend, Steven.
P.S. Arhksrrndfu Milotic is so pretty! Congrats on the evolution, ahhh! I can’t wait to see you two in action!
P.P.S. Have you heard of Mega Evolution?

Dear Wallie,
Your performance in Lilycove City was stunning and elegant! I’m so sorry I couldn’t be there in person. I lost track of time in Mount Pyre. Watching it back, you seemed a little sad during the show. Is something wrong? I’m really sorry for forgetting about the time. I wish I had been there to see it. Cradily, Claydol, Armaldo and Skarmory have joined my team, so now I have six Pokemon. Lairon and Metagross say hi.
Your (very sorry) best friend, Steven.

Dear Wallie,
I was devastated to hear of Elizabeth’s passing. It’s disgusting that things like that still happen to this day. I’ll be attending her funeral. See you there.
Your best friend, Steven.

Dear Wallie,
I’m writing this very late at night after receiving the Mossdeep gym badge. My next badge will be the Sootopolis Gym Badge. I know you’ve no interest in being a Gym Leader, but I’d love to battle you instead of Juan. I actually caught a Luvdisc yesterday. Called her Elizabeth. Think about my suggestion! Either way, I’ll see you soon!
Your best friend, Steven.

My dear Wallie,
I won’t be here when you wake up, so I’m leaving you this note. I’m so sorry for what I did this afternoon. With this note, you’ll find Elizabeth’s Pokeball. She’s a gift from me to you, as thanks for that Mega Keystone. I hope you’ll cheer for me after what I did. Our battle yesterday was wonderful, even if I ruined it. You’re elegant, strong and compassionate. I know you’ll become a wonderful Pokemon Coordinator. I’m so sorry. Anyway… You’re amazing, and when I see you again, I’ll be champion. Perhaps one day I’ll be champion of your heart, too.
Much Love, Steven.

(3-year timeskip)

My dear Wallie,
