Work Text:
Castiel could spend the rest of eternity watching Dean Winchester create masterpieces in the kitchen. Sure, sometimes the food Dean makes comes out misshapen, off-colored, or accidentally undercooked, and Cas can't actually appreciate the taste past the molecules that make up the ingredients, but he believes the dishes to be masterpieces nonetheless.
Cas sits perched on the counter near the microwave where Dean placed him, despite Sam’s insistence that it's unsanitary - as if Cas would ever let bacteria or a germ hurt his love - and watches Dean intently.
Dean used to find it unnerving, the way Cas would pick a spot out of the way and become still as a statue, just watching Dean, basking in his presence and treasuring every minute detail, but these days, Dean bullies him up on the counter into his spot and narrates everything that he does for the Angel.
Today, Dean is following along to a video for a pumpkin pie. Dean has never made pumpkin pie before, but he saw a yellow leaf this morning and decided that it was the correct season to give it a try despite it still being in the 80s in Kansas. Sometimes it doesn't start getting cold until well into November, and Dean doesn't have time for that; he wants to make pumpkin pie now.
“Who are you watching?” Cas asks and feels a little bad when it makes Dean jump; he doesn't usually talk while Dean is cooking, but Dean's mostly just scooping the guts out of a pumpkin right now, so Cas figured it was okay.
“Uh, I don't know. Some kid on YouTube that does this for a living.” Dean shrugs a shoulder and places another scoop of seed-filled goop in the strainer.
“Why don't you do that?”
“Do what?” Dean turns to look at Cas, confusion all over his face.
“Why don't you make videos and post them if the money is good?” Cas tilts his head and goes on before Dean can even form words, “You're incredibly handsome, and you already narrate for me. I could hold your camera.”
“Okay, one, I am incredibly handsome, thank you for noticing, and two,” Dean pauses, “this is just for us.” He gestures between the two of them with the pumpkin scooper. “I don't want to share it with anyone else.” Dean shrugs a shoulder again and turns back to continue scraping out the pumpkin.
Cas doesn't always understand social cues or subtext, but he does understand this: Dean finds this time that they spend together special. Cas smiles at the back of Dean's head, full of love for the man he broke away from Heaven and God himself for.
“So, the reason I'm keeping the seeds is because we're gonna roast em…” Dean starts up his narration, and Cas hangs on every word.
