Gold is thirteen when she first discovers Minecraft.

Despite the rough start of it, considering the blackout that nearly trapped her in a fatal glitch if not for her panicking dad shattering the firewalls, she managed to successfully persuade said overprotective dad into letting her play more of it.

She will never regret this decision.

Minecraft is where she finds Purple, a lost, angry, desperate boy, freshly exiled from the village he betrayed. She brings him home to Dad, who immediately starts fussing over the kid—as she expected, of course, from her mother-hen of a parent and a bruise-knuckled teen maybe two years younger than her.

Gold . . . doesn't know the details of the conversations Purple shares with Dad. She just waits outside the door, preparing cups of hot cocoa for all three of them, and when Purple gets cruel or cold or desperate, she fetches more cocoa and stays with him until he's finished crying himself out.

It takes a month of careful affection and patient kindness for Purple to finally stop leaving.

So that's how it is for a long time: her and Purple, exploring the possibilities of Minecraft together.

. . . Until Dad freaks out after a few too many close calls with mobs and ends up inventing a super-weapon-staff.

He accompanies them every time, these days, less from paranoia and more for genuine enjoyment. While he's terrible at the game for the most part, he's got a solid grasp on the logistics, amplified by the command block he bought for his staff, and Gold and Purple start being more fearless with the trust that their dad's got their back.

(Dad does despair a little at their recklessness, but what else is new?)

They explore a kingdom of cave spiders. They built a parkour course out of obsidian and light. They save the Queen of Dolphins from the Elder Guardians. It's fun, so much fun, made better by Gold's family being there every step of the way.

Gold never wants it to end.
