The Forgotten Cost

Summary:

One night after a fight with her parents, Scarlett is pulled into a world she never imagined. Taken in by a man shrouded in secrets, she quickly learns that his protection comes with a price.

The deeper she’s drawn into his circle, the more dangerous truths begin to surface — about him, about herself, and about the past her family never told her. Bonds are forged, skills are tested, and Scarlett realizes she may be standing at the edge of a story much larger than her own.

Because some secrets don’t just change your life. They rewrite it.

Hey guys! I am trying to write something new. So, this is my first proper work, so hopefully I get constructive criticism!

Chapter 1: Prologue

Chapter Text

The streetlights illuminated her path with a sickly glow, the roads usually filled with people now lay bare and desolate, like they were meant to foreshadow her fate. Scarlett feet hit the pavement with echoing thuds as she raced across the sidewalk, her heart hammering in her chest. She yearned to stop and catch her breath but the fear and adrenaline coursing through her veins forced her to move faster than she ever has in her life. The voices behind grew louder as she darted into a darkened alleyway and plastered herself against the wall, hoping to blend into the shadows. Placing her palm over her mouth, she tried to muffle her gasped breaths, as her eyes teared up. Screaming would be futile; she doubted anyone could hear her. Oh God, what will her parents do? Regret gnawed at her. If only she had listened to them, not stormed out of the house, she would not be here in the first place. She reckons pondering on the “should-haves” would help her now; all she longed for was to see her parents again and tell them how much she loved them and to apologize to them. Her racing thoughts were suddenly halted by a thud. Before she could turn, a hand clamped around her mouth, she tried to scream but her voice betrayed her. A prick in her neck, and all she could think was ‘Sorry, Ma’ before her vision faded to black.
