    Evangeline shrugged.
    “It doesn’t matter anymore,” she said, trying to pull free from Jacks’s grip. She lifted a hand to push his arms from her shoulders, but when she saw his eyes widen, she instantly regretted it and tried to pull back. But Jacks already had her wrist, and with his other hand he gently traced the bruises on her skin. He couldn’t believe what he was seeing.

    “He did this to you?” he asked, barely recognizing his own voice.
