His dark eyes blinked, somehow baffled. “What did I do?” The curiosity in his tone—real, genuine—was unbearable.
“You disappeared,” I snapped. “You leave for a year, after everything—everything—and promise me you’ll talk to me again, and then you vanish off the face of the fucking earth? Do you think that’s normal?”
“Yes,” he said immediately, as if it was the most obvious thing in the world. Then he caught the expression on my face—my teeth bared, my whole body braced like I was two seconds from breaking his nose—and he added, softer, eyes darting away for the briefest instant: “No. Sorry. No.”
